Bike to Work Month Challenge
 

May is bike to work month, each year our firm competes to see which office logs the most miles commuting (DC has won the last 3 years).

But my commute is only 3 miles one way. :( I don't even own a car, so I bike commute 100% of the time. I guess I just have to leave early and go for a 30+ mile ride every day on the way to work. ;)

That's the main problem with competitions like this. If for this one you happen to live farther from work, you actually have an advantage. I used to live 13 miles from work, and ride that 5 days a week. Along with riding to the rock gym twice during the week, adding about 10 miles each of those days.

It would be a cool trick to have every month, a bike commuting competition, maybe more folks by a small amount, would ride and not drive to work. ;)

Lol every month is bike to work month for me, I don't have a car (or license for that matter).

Now you just have to log those miles and use them for this competition. How is it in Bellingham, riding everywhere that is? I have only been thru there on my way to Canada.

It's really amazing, Bellingham is a VERY bike friendly town thank goodness, there are bike lanes on most roads, especially the major ones and even when there's not, the motorists are pretty respectful about passing and giving space. I work at 6am, and go to college at 1:30 while are opposite sides of town so I log a lot of miles on a daily basis, and have lucky never been threatened. Less motorists now that gas is up to over $4 a gallon :D

Every month is Bike To Work month. It's easy that way, I don't have to remember it.

At least y'all are able to do something. The city/state I work in just made it pretty much pointless to cycle commute.

I'm still searching for the link, but basically: if a cyclist cannot keep up with the flow of traffic, then they are prohibited from riding in the city limits on city streets. The original Municipal court ruling has been upheld by the State Criminal Appeals court.

We have bike to work weeks in May, and I ride everyday and of course every May I have a overnight field trip that keeps me from home. But I will figure a way to log it.

I commute year round too, it's fun to compete with some of our other offices. Last year 12 of our offices participated, including ones in Canada and Asia (London is in this year). Our Washington DC office (my office) has had the most riders and highest mileage since we started 3 years ago. We've had almost twice as many riders and mileage as the second place offices. St Louis came in 2nd in mileage last year.

Totaled108 is right, I live far from work so I have the advantage. Last year I logged around 470 miles in May, highest miles but not highest percentage of trips (missed a few days due to work travel). It's great to get people excited about bike commuting, good for your health and good for the environment. I just like riding bikes.

Crisis averted. The rule has been on the books, it's just no one has ever been prosecuted for violating it... until recently. Seems a local 'celebrity'/advocate was busted for violating 37 TRO 622 (moving too slow/impeding traffic) back in 2006. The defendant lost and appealed to the state, which just heard and upheld the earlier ruling last week.

The fact that he was riding his bike was not the issue- it was when and where: rush hour on the city's busiest expressway, wearing a Santa suit and towing a trailer that was promoting his candidacy for local office.
