Wuff! I'm glad you're Okay (relatively anyway), and I hope you heal up quickly.

JAG410 05-05-11 08:44 AM

Hope you heal quick and you get back on the bike soon!

dolanp 05-05-11 08:46 AM

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Kind of scary as I'm about to start commuting myself and the drivers here are notoriously bad.

Minimum bodily injury coverage for auto insurance in Oregon is $50K so make sure you get what's owed to ya for the pain...

The OP got "hooked" by a quick right turning motorist in a bumper to bumper situation.

jdgesus 05-05-11 09:21 AM

sorry to hear :( and hope you get better ASAP

canyoneagle 05-05-11 09:30 AM

Man, that sucks. Good to hear it wasn't worse.
I hope you got the insurance info / police report from the driver, as his/her insurance should cover the costs of medical and mechanical repairs.

exile 05-05-11 01:40 PM

Heal up quickly.

I'm confused about the situation though. Was the driver slightly in front of you and basically started turning the instant they put on the signal?

dcrowell 05-05-11 01:49 PM

Ouch. Heal quickly.

I initially thought you were at fault, until I saw it was a bike lane. Bike lanes are usually poorly-designed, yet if they are there you are expected to use them.

crazyfishor 05-05-11 02:11 PM

I almost had that happen to me last summer here in Eugene, a girl in a little car sped right past me and right hooked about 10 ft in front of me without even signaling. She turned into an Albertsons parking lot, so I followed her in the parking lot and gave her a piece of my mind, and that she could have hurt or killed me. I'd like to think she will at least think before doing something completely dangerous and idiotic like that again.

I'm glad to hear you are OK, I hope this doesn't deter you from getting back out on your bike after you recover!

EKW in DC 05-05-11 02:35 PM

Saw abt this earlier on Yehuda. Bad news. Heal fast K'!

Titmawz 05-05-11 03:38 PM

Thats a damn shame... Glad that you are ok =) Will the driver cover your bike expense ?

o0adam0o 05-05-11 03:50 PM

At first i though you landed where by the google maps "C" and i was like "daaaaaaaaang!" lol

First im glad you are ok! I recently got hit by a car that totaled my bike in March. The driver was at fault and was given a citation on the spot.

If you are sure it was not your fault.. My advice would be to call their insurance and file a claim. I waited 2 days and they never called me :/ so i decided to do it and found out they were aware of the accident but didnt even bother to call me. Take pictures of the area. Make a list of all the damages including bike parts and clothing and any accessories. Look up any receipts or even online history of your purchases and take screenshots. If the insurance decides its their clients fault they will immediately make you an offer.. a very low ball offer. Laugh hysterically and refuse it and send them all your damages information. They will then send you a 2nd offer. Remember to be nice to everyone that you speak to! They will decide how much you get.. i pretty much begged the adjuster for more money via email and i got 3x what they originally offered (yes it was a fair ammount for my damages) This is advice based on what happened with me.

Hope this helps

justadude 05-05-11 03:54 PM

That's good that you feeling ok and hopefully get that arm checked out and cleared! Maybe the driver can pay for your bike if they caused the accident.

Edit: I was gonna throw in some good name calling 4u, but you said not to.

woodway 05-05-11 05:06 PM

Glad you are OK.

I hate passing stopped traffic on the right and try not to do it unless there is no alternative. Daytime running lights, front and back, really bright ones, are a must when riding everyday in traffic. Mine (Dinotte) have saved my bacon more then once.

Don't settle with their insurance until you have seen a non-emergency doc and gotten checked out. Sometimes it takes a few days before the real pains set in.

Standalone 05-05-11 05:42 PM

Get that arm better soon! Here's hoping you don't have to be off the bike for too long-- whether b/c of time to heal or time to replacement!

azesty 05-05-11 08:05 PM

That sucks. Hope you are back on the saddle soon.

I agree, Drivers fixate on centering their car between the lines. When you are in the lane they see you. The ****ty drivers get stuck behind you because they can't overcome centering the lane. The bike lane makes you invisible as you said. The driver centers the lane with the blinders on/tunnel vision to anything outside that lane and give no room when they pass.

Glad the OP survived. That fool got you good.

I just thought this over and this would be a good learning experience for me. Sometimes I'll blow by stopped traffic, but the OP's accident has me thinking otherwise. I recall numerous occasions where impatient drivers with a short fuse would make an unexpected right turn into the biking lane in order to take the upcoming right. I really hate then they do this. I also hate when you are stopped at a red light and there's cars behind you waiting to turn IN THE BIKE LANE? There was one yesterday and he/she made it known that they were pissed off of my presence by skidding out when they made the turn. I use to move myself ahead and to the left, but I am not going to put myself in harms way just so they can save 10 seconds. Anyone know if they can legally do this in California? Shouldn't they be in the car lane, wait patiently for all the car ahead of them and then take the right turn???

no motor? 05-07-11 06:08 PM

Sow how are things today? Hopefully good.

justadude 05-07-11 06:28 PM

It's unfortunate but true that drivers can and will pull out in front of you from a line of traffic, whether you're passing right or left. Whether you're on a bike, a motorcycle, riding a horse, driving a car, skateboarding, driving a fire truck, or whatever. No matter what kind of lane you're in. It's always good to slow down and be extra cautious (defensive), passing a line of slowed or stopped cars.

K'Tesh, hope you're doing fine and everything works out good for you.

Rats. Too bad the driver didn't need a Starbucks...

Heal up quickly.

work4bike 05-07-11 06:53 PM

You're not a real cyclist until you've been runned over. Most everyone else just quits riding or only rides on the sidewalk/MUPs. The true cyclist gets back on the road and exercises his/her rights to the road:thumb:

Uploaded images of the damage...

I've uploaded images of the damage on flickr...

I found that the frame is bent... The seat stays were straight before I was hit.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5024/...3fcb26c16e.jpg http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2066/...b73a59c7d2.jpg
The right seat stay is bowed in, the left is bowed out...

Also discovered that my camera was effected, the viewscreen is flaking out... glad to see that the images are still clear.

非常感谢 I don't know how this will affect my plans on going to Taiwan/China (to teach). Oh well, I've got time (1.5 years to go till I finish the degree).

K'Tesh 05-08-11 07:30 PM

And the Damage Estimate is in...

To try to bring Ludwig back up and running in a pre-crash condition...

$1694.93 (Parts and Labor)

Now I need to hear from their adjuster to see what they are going to do about this (and my camera).

This doesn't include any medical bills.
