I reached 32.3 mph on my commute today...

How fast do you normally get up to on your commute?

Typically my max reaches into the high 20s, but if the wind is either in the right direction or calm and I give some effort, I can hit low 30s. Highest ever on my commute was 36.2.

On flats I'll normally never go over 20 unless there is a nice headwind. There are some hills on the river side where I can hit 35mph or so.

Lets see, for fun on my 7.1 that is turning into my commuter, I can hit 36 on the hill getting out of my neighborhood, and 25,26 on the flat part of the gravel trail that i am on frequently. I generally avg about 13-16 depending on what part of the trail im on.

I have a short, steep downhill on my ride home. If I push it, I can hit 70 kmph. My all time record is 73.4, which is about 45 mph.

I do 21-22 mph on the flats when wind is not an issue, 16-18 mph into a ~10- mph headwind. I have gone over 50 downhill but that starts to get a little unnerving.

I have one long downhill that is avg 5-6% grade... (some section 10%) for 3.5 miles. If I just idle, it tops out around 32mph. Typically doing light pedaling to keep my leg warm and hitting around 35-38mph. (Yes, that speed is much easier than climbing same thing back up at 7mph+) Fortunately this hill is on the way to work so I don't really sweat much on the way. (getting road bike soon and wondering how much faster downhill would be...) Oh... btw, this is on folding bike... Dahon Speed Tr...

According to my computer, 99.9 km/h. Traffic sensors don't agree with it sometimes.

44mph on my last commute into school on Ludwig that was on an area where there were no driveways... Later that day, I was hit by a car while doing 20-25mph, haven't been able to ride since.

I have no hills... but with a strong tailwind I can get the LHT up to about 25 on the flat. That's with panniers.

actual mph aside I recall that my morning commutes were quite explosive. something about my morning prep routine and nutrition combined with a good nights rest. when all cylinders were firing at optimum I felt like my tires should be bursting into flames.

How do you all hit such speeds? I can barely hit 18-20mph on a flat and it rarely goes over 24mph on a downhill decent with me pedaling. Frustrated

I've got several hills on my commute where my speed tops 30 mph coasting. If I'm pedaling hard, my speed can reach 36-38 mph. Lots of hills on my commute, but none more than about 1/2 mile long. The worst hills are the short, steep ones after a stop.

How in the world do you people accomplish speeds like this? I have been commuting for 1 year now and have never reached speeds like this without a ridiculous tailwind or drafting a bus.

Pedal harder? Do you live where there are no hills? I have one hill I can easily hit 30+ everyday.

If I can get a car to pace me on a downhill section I can get pretty good speeds (30+) even on a hybrid, but I deem it far too dangerous to do that. What if the car hits the brakes? I'd smash right into his rear at full speed.

With a full load (Panniers and a HB bag) I max out around 25 MPH. I know that I could go faster than that if I wanted, but my commute is 21.5 miles each way so I am not interested in petering myself out on a sprint.

In my case I am more interested in average speed, as I think that tells you more about how you rode overall. Yesterday I hit an average speed of 14.3 MPH during my morning commute, a PB for me on that route. I would like to get it up to 15 in time. I should mention that about 13 of the miles I commute are on MUP. Afternoon commute is always a bit slower due to increased MUP traffic. If I can keep my average speed in the 13's it feels respectable. I hope to continue improving on my average speed as my weight goes down.

My normal commute route is quite flat. I rarely go above 21 - 22 mph. On most days I'm even slower at 16 - 17mph.

If I take the long way there's a few lumps in the road. Combine that with drafting a city bus, and I can hit 35.

I've done 47.5 mph, but that was a steep downhill and nowhere near my commute route.

My max is about 44 down Ramsey Hill in St. Paul. I'm not sure what the grade is--11%? It's short enough so I'm still accelerating at the bottom, and hoping the light doesn't turn red!

Personally I'd be more worried about my front tire blowing.
