What would you do at a railroad crossing with an approaching train but no barrier?

As you ride toward a railroad crossing ahead in the road, you see that its red warning lights are flashing and hear its electronic bell. However, the crossing isn't equipped with barrier gates (as many surprisingly aren't). The train isn't quite at the crossing and doesn't blow its whistle. You don't know how fast it's going. What would you do?

In a case such as this, I'd stop at the crossing.

Why would you do anything else but stop?

People have been killed at railroad crossings thinking they can cross ahead of an approaching train, only to be hit by a faster train that's using an adjacent track at the same crossing.

I would avoid being run over by the train.

Stop. Check my watch and try to avoid riding that way again if it's a long train.

Trains can be traveling faster than they appear. The local Amtrak does 70 mph through some crossings. A small slip riding over the tracks trying to beat the train could be disastrous.

Bikes: 2 many

I would ride home as fast as I can, and start a thread about it in the forums.

Locomotive engines weight 300,000 lbs......that is just the engine.
Each wheel has two brake shoes....one brake shoe weights 35 lbs

How much does your bike weight?

like any red-blooded american male, i would determine whether or not i could get across without getting hit, assume i wouldn't make any mistakes crossing the rails, and then go like hell.

I crossed many tracks with no crossing on motorcycles by riding/ lifting dirt bikes over the rails. No matter how far away the train looks, it's coming a lot faster than you think. If you can just barely see the light, get out of there as fast as you can.

If the lights are flashing the train is to close to cross safely.

Just like this video, I would casually stroll across, then sprint the last few feet. It doesn't look like it's very close until the last few seconds.

No brainer. Stop and wait. I had to wait extra one hour again for train today as someone crossed thinking train was coming slow and got struck... again... This happens once a month if in average...

I'd wait, but then I've seen the remnants washed off the front of locomotives.

here some trains do 350 km/h (220 mph) but to maintain that speed they have discrete tunnels that go under/over most roadways. However, they do go through stations quite quickly sometimes.
