A helmet Poll for us commuters....

Okay, another (hopefully) fun thread....

Beings that most of us here on the Commuting Forum are into more function than fashion...

1)What helmet do you use?

2)What did you pay for it?

3)And when/what will make you decide to replace it?

I'll go first:

1) Giro Stylus, bought spring of 2010

2) On sale from Performance for $50

3) Most likely will replace this winter and keep the old one for a spare.

chasm54 08-02-11 03:28 PM

1. None
2. Nothing
3. No need.

Steely Dan 08-02-11 03:31 PM

1) A Bell Ukon FS (a basic all black el cheapo supreme).

2) 25 bucks on sale at Performance.

3) I got it a couple of months ago after I got hit by a bus and went down hard with my old helmet (bike was totaled :( ). My old helmet was a basic Bell el cheapo supreme as well. I won't spend real money on a helmet. It's foam; who spends $100+ on foam?

cyclokitty 08-02-11 03:42 PM

Pryme 8 helmet, black with stickers

$20.00 Since 2005. It's my spring-summer-mild fall helmet. I need to replace it soon but I haven't found a spare moment to try on every type of helmet in the lbs to find the right one.

I also have a skid helmet by Pryme I wear during cold weather. I love the ear covers.

PJones0012 08-02-11 03:45 PM

Ditto.

Headphones 08-02-11 03:46 PM

1: Bell
2: $20
3: I rarely wear it so I'll keep for awhile

jdswitters 08-02-11 03:50 PM

1. 1992 Rhode gear
2. I can't remember what I had for lunch a week ago.
3. I only pull it out for occasional group rides where helmets are mandatory and commutes on snow/ice, should last me another 20 years. The stickers help with the UV degradation.

or I may buy a Bern Brentwood for the winter, but I will not wear a helmet in the summer unless it is for something really fun like UAR.

SouthFLpix 08-02-11 03:59 PM

1. Giro - I don't know what model.
2. $30
3. I don't plan to replace it.

wolfchild 08-02-11 04:20 PM

I have two helmets: Giro Encinal and Bell Faction.

CACycling 08-02-11 04:23 PM

1) Gyro Indicator

2) $35 @ Performance

3) Damaged or too grungy whichever comes first

BlankTim 08-02-11 04:32 PM

1. Bell Ukon FS
2. ~$45.00 (I bought it three years ago, can't remember for sure)
3. As soon as one of the local Nutcase helmet stockists starts carrying either of these:

http://www.nutcasehelmets.com/en/col...t/dazed_amused

http://www.nutcasehelmets.com/en/col...uct/watermelon

Or, when I absolutely have to replace it. Whichever comes first.

earthworm94 08-02-11 05:26 PM

1. Trek Interval in 2007 (Black)

2. about $50 (purchased at near retail at a bike store along with my first serious bike)

3. Until it stinks beyond cleaning, disintegrates or by 2017, whatever comes first... Or something significantly better (which I doubt it can) at an excellent bargain.

osephjey 08-02-11 05:30 PM

Black Trek Helmet with visor $40 on sale.
Wear it often and always.
Will replace if it gets thrashed in a wreck...if I survive.

1)What helmet do you use?
2011 Giro Atmos

2)What did you pay for it?

3)And when/what will make you decide to replace it?
Crash or 5 years.

ZmanKC 08-02-11 06:31 PM

1. None
2. $0
3. N/A

mconlonx 08-02-11 07:04 PM

1. Giro Section

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...6L._AA300_.jpg

2. $30 (employee discount)

3. Giro has a new skate-style helmet out which includes a molded brim. Will probably get one next year, if we don't start carrying Nutcase in the meantime -- would be all over a Glo-Brain helmet in a heartbeat.

El Duderino X 08-02-11 09:38 PM

Mace (Trigger?), Mace Trigger Solo, Bern G2

$27.00, $45.00 & $90.00

3)And when/what will make you decide to replace it?
When they're wrecked.

Onions 08-02-11 10:25 PM

1. Blue Bell el-cheapo helmet from Wal-Mart
2. $8 on End-of-Season Clearance
3. When it becomes too grungy so that a run through the shower with some dish soap doesn't fix it, or after a wreck.

gdhillard 08-02-11 11:42 PM

Nutcase. From Goodwill. $3.99. Because I love my brain.

Ratchet 08-03-11 12:12 AM

I'm embarrassed to say:
Giro Ionos
$180 (on sale)
When I crash it or (honestly) when the styles
change enough that another one looks cooler
(or so I think)...
Well, it does have lots of good vents. $200 worth? Hmmmmm... Prolly not. But it is pretty. As far as brain buckets go (and I'm a Neuro nurse, so NO chance you'll see me out without one!)...
