Hi,

Does anyone have any opinions on this bike? Im looking to buy an internal hub bike under $800, and this seems to fit the bill. most are $1000 plus. Thanks

Bike = a frame with some name painted on it, in a factory making many brands.
and components from somebody else, bought in bulk , attached to it.

IS the Rocky Mountain brand sold in your near by LBS?

Shimano's Alfine is OK , disc brakes are a good improvement in wet weather braking.

But, those components are not unique to RM.

The Dealer is the one to set the bike up and adjust it , and take care of you after the sale.

Rocky Mountain Bicycles is a reputable Canadian bike manufacturer that has been in business for almost 30 years. Up until recently they made all their frames in their Vancouver, BC factory. Unfortunately, they've had to start having them made in Taiwan to stay competitive. That said, their wheels are still hand-made in Vancouver. There is only one RM dealer in this area, and they are sold alongside offerings from Kona, Norco, and others.

I wanted to try that bike out myself (albeit the 2009 version). Unfortunately, the aforementioned dealer was unwilling to order the bike in for me just so I could test ride it. He cited that if I didn't want the bike, he would have a hard time selling it. I called Rocky Mountain personally, and they tried to convince the dealer to bring one in, but he wouldn't budge. Needless to say, I shopped elsewhere and eventually decided on a belt-driven 2010 Norco Ceres.

I would definitely give the bike a test ride, and I hope that your LBS is more accommodating then my local RM dealer.

Rocky Mountain makes some very nice bikes... However they are overpriced, you're paying a little bit extra because of the name. Their frames are not made in canada anymore but in taiwan, just like most of the other brand name bikes. I have an older mountain bike made by RM it even has a sticker that says" made in canada".
That bike came with some very good quality components, but I still think it was overpriced. You can get a bike from another brand for much cheaper. It's up to you.

Bike is on Jenson USA for 600, free shipping. Also saw a 2008 Jamis Commuter 4 with a double crankset for 16 gears with the Alfine for 579. The Treks and Globes around here at local dealers are 1000 plus. I know going to the dealer is great for a fitting and maintenance, but its hard to argue for getting something close for half the price

I have the 2008 version of this bike. It's a good commuter, but I find the ride quality a little harsh. I've noticed that Rocky Mountain now uses round tubes instead of the triangular ones that mine came with, so perhaps that will improve it.
One great thing about Rocky Mountain, at least the one I have, is the wheel quality. In two years of bouncing through potholes and over rutted packed snow, they have not gone out of true.
