25 miles each way x 5 days a week
Most of my commute is along a scenic bikeway with lots of scenery and wildlife along the way. |
19.9 miles each way, i work 3 12s so turn arounds kinda' kick my butt. My trip times are about 1:20 on the way in and 1:30 on the way out. I once made it in 1:02 on the way in and 1:20 on the way out but i must have had killer tailwinds.

18 miles each way, 2-6 trips per week on average. I leave my car at work, pedal home and then pedal back to work the next am. Year round.

17 miles in the morning, with 10 miles in dirt/gravel, 15 miles in the evening, with 5 miles in dirt/gravel.
50-60 lb mtn bike. I'm on a bay trail a lot, which is scenic but often windy. |
Mine is 4.5 miles round trip, 6-7 times per week to university. Route to school is all up hill and very steep, but totally worth the ride home :)
Also, I'm guilty of riding fixed, which doesn't help with the hills. |
4.3 flat one way miles usually 5 days a week (depends on the need for the van for meetings in other cities, which I try not to set up). On the Pinellas Trail most of the way.
For those who label themselves wimpy for their short commutes think about the fact that cars are their most polluting when they are first started, they wear most when first started, if every driver in this country replaced 1 mile of driving with 1 of walking or biking in 6 years we'd have 5 million fewer obese people in the US, and that same reduced driving mile in our 50 largest metro areas would save 1.3 billion dollars per year in expenses for each area. Just a sample of what the benefits of riding the bike are, but you already knew that! Besides, it is fun and a great way of life! |
How will that happen ridefreemc? When people find out that I'm getting ready to walk a mile and a half home from church they look worried, like it's impossible to do it. People drive for the stupidest, shortest distances that it's crazy. I bet many people drive less than 5 miles to the gym to work out.

On your walk from church, how many times do you have to turn down a ride? Sometimes on my way to lunch I would get asked two or three times. After a while I get left alone, but yes we are considered odd for sure. What really gets me is a local event at the school - maybe an open house set well before dark. My family (3 tweeners and the Ms) bike or walk to the school - less than a mile - and we are the ONLY ones out of hundreds biking or walking. Many live closer than us. And we are looked at as if we are Ed on "Living with Ed." We are home before they even get out of the parking lot though. |
Like somebody said, cars are training wheels for wheel chairs.

4.5 miles in the morning.
About 6 miles on the way home, including a 1/2 mile hill climb. |
2.
:) |
14 miles one-way / 28 miles round trip / 5 days per week

About 10.5 miles each way. Just started commuting by bike, still learning the ropes. Over half my commute is through a not-so-nice part of town ... I find that my avg/max speed is much higher in this area hummmmm. Entire commute is straight through the city, lots of traffic lights.
Still building up some endurance/fitness, so it's the bike one day, the truck the next, repeat. Sometimes depends on if I have to cart kids around after work etc. Add to that a 12 hour shift and it can make for a long day! The plus side is I've lost nearly 20 pounds just by riding a bike & exercising my brain/will-power to control food portions. Takes 1.75 gallons of gas for my truck for one commute. At ~$4/gal, that's seven bucks I can save if I commute by bike. That adds up in a hurry! |
20 miles each way (40 round). Doing it 3x a week so far.
|
12 mile climb up narrow two lane steep twisty Redwood lined mountain roads to work. An 8 mile downhill sled run going home. Years ago my commute was 35 miles, one way, over the Santa Cruz Mountains to work, again two lane mountain twisties.
Life is good:thumb: |
10.75 in, 10.5 home. About 45 min each way. I have a long descent and climb each way, and about 1.5 mi of flat land in between. My descent in the morning is like a roller coaster, i wish i had a helmet camera. I do it every day, April to November, unless it is really pouring. I also ride my roadie 30-60 mi on weekends. In the off season it is me and the trainer. I have to remind myself to take a day off.
|
21 miles each way. On nice days, I like to take a more scenic way home which is 31 miles door to door. On not so nice days, I'll take the train part way which cuts the 21 mile ride down to 12.
|
4 miles to work and 3.5 home. In the summer I add loops in the morning. Spring and fall in the afternoon. So my round trip distance runs between 10 to 25 miles. Average 4 days a week. Nov - Feb I just ride the 7.5 miles when no ice or snow on the roads. I have been commuting since 2006
My work location changes in October. 11 miles each way. |
I commute 17.5 miles each way 3 times a week. The ride is flat and is about 2/3 via city roads and 1/3 via bike trail. Unfortunately, I spend way too much time stopped at traffic lights.

I have 2 part-time jobs and I ride (2x/week) to the one that is ~3mi away. The other job is about 20mi away so I wuss out & just subway it.
For you 20+ milers, how do you do it!? It would seriously take me 2+ hours to get to work. (More like 3hrs with my out-of-shape behind, actually. And the crowded city streets don't help!) Does it just take time & practice? Will I be able to eventually work my way up to a 20+ mile commute? Is there hope for me yet!? ;) |

Almost exactly 15 miles round trip to class. All roads ranging from 25-45mph speed limits. So far, I haven't had any problems with cars since they all seem terrified of hitting me. I wouldn't dream of riding the route at night though. It goes primarily through a sketchy part of town.
