Commuting Distance

Hi I'm Commuting To Work 23 Miles One Way and I'm Just Wondering How Many Of You Out There Commute That Same Distance ?? How Many Miles Do You Commute To Work Each Day. :)

stdlrf11 09-12-11 01:18 AM

I did 25 miles one way for over a year. We just moved, so now I'm down to 21 miles one way.
I take the train part way home, so the return trip is about 11 miles, 4 of which are spent cruising around while waiting for the train.

Farmer Dave 09-12-11 01:30 AM

I just started cycling a couple months ago. My commute is 14 miles round trip. Not very far and not too short, just riiiiiiiiiiiight. :)

Mithrandir 09-12-11 05:32 AM

19 miles one way for me. At the moment I think 19-23 is probably the upper range of what I would commute.

Doing it twice a week now, last week I tried to do it 3 times, but unfortunately the 38 miles wears me out to a point where I'm still not able to do it on subsequent days.

Also one of the issues with anything longer than 10 miles, in my opinion, is that it becomes really demoralizing when conditions are miserable. Both commutes home last week were directly into 20mph headwinds. After a long day at work I end up cursing the whole way home thinking "why am I doing this?!".

19 miles one way for me. I can only manage to commute 1 day a week due to family commitments and picking the kids up from school etc or I would do it more often if I could.

My wife on the other hand just has a 5 mile commute to work so she can get away with doing it more regularly :notamused:

I ride 13.8 each way. When I first started riding it was a stuggle, now I am thinking about seeing if my wife will let us buy a new house about 5 miles further away. Uh, probably not, I think I will just start going a longer route, and I am an old fat guy.

gosurf101 09-12-11 06:33 AM

I ride 19.5 in the morning and then 14 miles in the afternoon it's not that bad.

Surrealdeal 09-12-11 06:59 AM

20.5 each way for a 41 mile round trip. I commute as many days of the week as my after work schedule allows.

The Chemist 09-12-11 07:11 AM

45km (28 miles) round trip. It's easy, but I don't have the time to make it any longer, as I would have to leave the house far too early and get home far too late if I were to add an extra 5-8km each way.

alan s 09-12-11 07:21 AM

My ride is a fairly flat 15 miles each way along the Potomac River trails and MUPs. If I ride all the way from home, it adds 11 miles each way of hills, so I only do the full 52 miles when I have prepositioned clothes at work, take my road bike, and have lots of energy and time. Typically, I drive part way and then ride.

Watch that CAPS LOCK key, John... it would have been considered rude if the forum software hadn't converted your post.

Anyways, 23 miles would take me about two hours, on average. I think it would stop being "fun" in a hurry... 8.5miles/37min is just about right for me.

3.5 miles each way.
5 times per week.

Hey I know where Sullivan, WI is!!!:thumb:

I live near Stoughton, WI and bike into Madison for work....

I'm only going 17 miles each way but I've managed to not drive my car to work since the first week of April. 174 miles a week if I work all 5 days... I'm over 3400 miles for 2011 and trying to see if I can make it to 5000. I got to 4005 last year before the cold and snow shut me down.

I am really liking the weather in Southern WI the last few days! Perfect!

Enjoy!

about 11 miles each way. depends on traffic/heat etc. nice days it's longer. bad days it's shorter. lately it's been a few days a week. getting back into shape from accident earlier has taken a lot longer than I thought it would. plan is to ride 5 days/week as I was doing before the accident. am up to 3 days/week now. cool fall weather will also help.

MNBikeCommuter 09-12-11 09:31 AM

47 miles round trip, but I generally push it past 50 to get the half century. :-) I'm averaging riding about half the commutes--more in the summer and less in the winter (when I'll catch the light rail train for part of the trip one or both ways). It took a while to build up the endurance, with three days in a row the first couple of years too much. I can do five in a row now, but Fri's commute isn't as fast as Monday's.

NoTrail 09-12-11 10:12 AM

I feel like such a wimp (or perhaps really lucky) that my commute is only 4.5 miles each way. Although I must admit, when the weather is nice I have found the return trip to be a LOT longer than that. :)

Chalupa102 09-12-11 05:07 PM

Last semester I was doing ~21.2 miles one-way four days a week. This semester I've changed the route a bit and doing ~21.6 miles one-way. I still plan to do it four days a week with one rest day.

Hey John!

I don't get into Madison proper too often but there are some great bike facilities being implemented...Here's a photo of some new pavement marking on the Southwest Commuter Path (a former rail corridor). This intersection is SE of Camp Randall Stadium. It should be very easy for a bike to navigate this now....

16 each way, 2x/week

consumes 09-14-11 07:45 PM

im the super wimp .... 5 miles round trip :)

The Golden Boy 09-14-11 08:03 PM

It's a little under 15 miles one way for me.

When I was starting at 0800 it was cool. Now I'm starting at 0600- and I really don't dig leaving the house THAT early- and I'm usually staying late and by that time my tail is kind of kicked, so the ride home is sometimes kind of rough.

I wish the water at the trail stop in Sullivan didn't taste so bad. 100% of your annual iron requirement in 12 oz.

Dirt Farmer 09-14-11 08:10 PM

Quarter mile each way.

Jonic 09-14-11 08:36 PM

Consistently 9.6 miles on the ride in but the ride home varies between 11 to 15 with an occasional 20+ thrown in for good measure. Usually 5 days a week, but sometimes it doesn't work out.
