Since im not getting any answers on the hybrid forum: Folding Pannier Basket and Inte

Well, I have finally landed a job that makes it viable to commute to work by bike!!!

Havn't rode a bike in a long while and my belly shows it so I went out and found a trek 7.2 fx and jumped on it!

So now I need to figure out how to out fit it!

Im looking at getting a rear bontrager rack, folding pannier basket and an interchange trunk bag, but im unsure if the trunk bag will work with the folding pannier basket.

Does anyone around hear know if this combo is compatable?

I would mainly use the basket to hold my lunch when commuting and the trunk bag for a change of clothes. Thanks!

I have started to use a 16L Garneau trunk bag and I find it a bit tight for clothes (shirt, socks, undies, pants, belt, no room for shoes) during the fall. I have to pack my lunch in my hydration pack. During the summer, it wasn't so bad because shorts take less room than pants and I don't bother with socks in the sandles I leave at work.

For this time of year when I also have to take the weather into account, I am going to find that my trunk rack will be well below my clothing-storage needs and I will have to install the rack and panniers that arrived yesterday. On a cool morning, I may need tights and a jacket but for the ride home, I might not need those so I have to find the space to carry them home.

Therefore, you might want to reconsider the folding basket (I assume it is one of those metal, grocery-style ones) and go with a set of panniers plus a trunk if you want (the trunk may be sufficient in warm weather).

HTH,

Jules

Well, thats kinda missing my point. I need the folding basket for my lunch pail that I use (IE man purse). What I want to know is if anyone has used the interchange trunk bag with the folding pannier basket? and if so does the trunk bag interfere with the mounting of the basket?

Im pretty sure the trunk bag will be fine with what I need to carry in it (pants and shirt) because I work in an office environment and will not need to carry other heavy clothing items. Also im a cold weather guy so a hooded sweatshirt will be fine for winter where I live. I wont be riding when the weather is wet or rainy (don't trust the traffic in those conditions).

you speaking of a Fabric folding side basket, JandD, brand etc..
or a steel wire Wald One?

I'd suggest 2 Panniers , on either side of a rear rack
you can get them with a connecting panel so they act like one thing off the bike.
lunch in one and your extra clothing in another.

looks like the bontrager racks have that top rack to work with. Don't know since I don't own it but I'd be cautious about whether the thing will hold both panniers (which clip on to the sides) and a dedicated racktop trunk (which may or may not be flush with the top rack).

Many racks have lower bars for clipping panniers onto, and unless you absolutely must have Bontrager racks for some reason maybe that's what you should look into. If you want that trunk bag for the quick release, Topeak has a similar system which has worked for me. As a bonus they have bungies built-in on top of their trunks, which I've used to carry anything from sandals (office footware) to lightweight tents.

Im talking about the bontrager wire folding basket and the interchange bike trunk that clips into the rack. Im trying to avoid getting 2 panniers because it will not work with what im trying to accomplish. My lunch box has it own handle and whatnot and I do not want to change it. So im looking to get a wire folding pannier basket that I can use if I were to say ride down to the store as well.

Not with this specific setup, but I generally prefer not to use a trunk bag if I'm using anything on the sides (panniers or otherwise). IMO it is less than optimal for a number of reasons, the interferences that you are curious about being one.

If, instead of the trunk bag, you used a pannier, you should be scot free to use the basket on the other side.

You will find that your trunk bag will overhang just enough over your wire basket(s) to be a bit annoying and take away space. I had that same set up before with two Wald 582 baskets and a trunk bag mounted on top. I ended up taking the trunk bag off because the overlap always got in the way of taller grocery bags and other items.

Plus I found it more helpful to have a flat platform without the trunk bag. I could open up both baskets and have a REALLY big flat platform for larger boxes, etc by using the entire area to rest the item on. YMMV

Yes, the setup will work. Critical contact points for the Interchange version of the trunk bag interface at the front and rear; the hooks for the folding rack do not interfere with the fit. You will want the Interchange version of the trunk bag, and probably the basic version -- if you get the one with side pockets or the top dog model with the foldaway panniers, it will overhang the basket by a bit.

But really, this is a question for you local Trek shop...
