My great wife wants to buy a new bike for me for Christmas

Last nite we looked at the Specialized Expedition, Specialized Crossroads (around $400 cdn) and the new 2005 Trek 100 and Trek 200. I commute about 28 km per day, about 4 km of that is on rough potholed country roads, while the remainder of the trip is on pavement.

Advice on which bike would be a smart purchase?
