APEC road closures have tied up Oahu traffic all week. Cops and secret service have not only closed the H-1 Freeway, they also closed the highway under the freeway viaduct. That I understand to prevent a car bombing from taking out a support on the freeway viaduct. But closing the frontage road and adjoining bike path was taking it a bit too far. All for either China’s Hu or Mrs. Obama; not sure which.

Fortunately for me this morning, I made it 50 yards past the choke point that would have forced me to stop even on a bicycle, when all the cops along Nimitz Highway turned on their blue lights and stopped all traffic onto the highway. They of course let the traffic that did not get stopped to continue to clear. But a couple of miles down the highway as all the motorist had cleared, a couple of cops got hyper and waved their arms for me to exit the highway and onto the frontage road. A couple of blocks later a cop directed me off the frontage road. Fortunately I knew how to get back onto the highway by riding down a side street and then cutting through a park, through a fence (cut open by the homeless) just beyond the last cop roadblock.

So for 10 miles of my commute today, I had 3 to 4 lanes of highway mostly to myself and one other cyclist trying to catch me.

PS - it is amazing how quite it gets without all the motors.
