If I can have a choice, I choose wind and cold. Rain makes drivers crazier than... well, crazier than usual crazy and rain also feels wretched when it is combined with cold. Wind and rain? Let's not go there, mmkay?

Having a root canal isn't nearly as bad as needing one. I think even that beats the driving rain we've had over the past few days.

I did take the bail-out option on the way home yesterday. Riding 2 miles into the wind to get to the MAX station, I unclipped twice because I thought the wind was going to take me down. Today was much better with 50 degrees and rain but light wind.

Although our winter days are very short we get a lot of sunshine and having lived in areas where winter is nothing by endless overcast days know I need to see the sun pretty regularly.

Have spent a good amount of time in PDX over the past 2 winters and found the dampness and low temperatures are more chilling than our sub zero winter days.

If it was not for the most beautiful woman in the world (my wife) Portland winters would be unbearable.

My wife actually starts to get depressed late in the summer when it hasn't rained for a month or two. I guess you have to have grown up here.

Growing up in Oregon I just learned not to put my life on hold for the rain. I used to play basketball out on the street as a kid in the rain for hours, because if I didn't I would never get to play. I think our aversion to rain is in large part a mindset thing. I sure don't miss the cold and snowy winters from when I lived in Utah.

I knew I made the right decision to drive yesterday. When I got to work today, two of the three windsocks on our campus were ripped from the frame. Definitely a bad sign.

It rained so hard down here I caught myself just laughing at how ridiculous it was and I was for being out in it. And wind. But it wasn't cold....

Dunno about playing bball in the rain, but we used to use up all my mother's salt to get the ice of the driveway, and every twenty minutes or so we'd have to run the basketball in the clothesdryer to make it bounce again. Life back east out in the country...I prefer Wetstern Oregon over the cold. Never have had to shovel rain.

Rain, or cold, or wind, pick any two.
The Pineapple express Storm track off the SW Pacific is warmer.
I prep for All 3 for months to come, though the rain is warmer in Juneuary.

No way! I'll take wind-cold-ice-snow over anything involving rain. Once, on a cycling tour of Ireland/Wales I rode 8 straight hours in a torrential, continuous downpour in North Wales. Caused me to get sick and almost ruined what was otherwise a life changing experience. Spent the next 2 weeks battling a fever, chills, etc. Completely turned me off to any rain/cycling combination. Clinical aversion. :notamused: Man, give me 20 straight miles of a 15% grade w/a 20 mph headwind than an hour in the rain. :thumb:

As a full-time commuter I have to make concessions in terms of clothing and accessories(fenders, etc.), but I'd just as soon it always rain on the way home. :)

Wow I thought Canadian drivers might know better - wait to you see Aussie or Los Angeles drivers in the rain...it happens so rarely they go nuts.. "I had better speed all the way home to get out of this rain"

truly terrifying

I'll have to say, we are pretty blessed when it comes to weather in North Carolina. For the most part, we don't get a lot of extreme conditions except when its 100 F and humid in summer. Cold doesn't bother me as the worst we get is usually mid-teens in the dead of winter. I don't like riding in the rain, but our storms usually come and go within a few hours. Wind always sucks and is very unpredictable around here, but we get nothing compared to the Midwest and Plains states. Hurricanes are the most extreme weather we deal with -- and they are about extreme as you can get -- but we don't get them very often.

i hit the trifecta this morning: 36 degrees, a 20 knot headwind at my 1 o'clock screaming at me off the lake, and light rain. zip-a-dee-doo-dah!

CrazyWally 11-28-11 04:05 PM

I'll take rain any day, and actually don't mind the wind as it makes the less windy days that much easier from the strength I'm building up. So far the coldest I have done is 23F, but hoping to make it through the winter down to -20f!

Old swedish proverb:

"There's no such thing as bad weather - Only bad clothes!"

In heavy headwinds I imagine all that oxygen blowing effortlessly into my lungs, making the pedaling easier!

On the same note, going uphill means you're storing potential energy so at the top you have more energy than before! :D

Combination of cold (less than 40F) and rain on a bike is just misery. God forbide if there is a flat or mechanical problem.
