Which of these is best for commuting?

I currently have an 80s Schwinn World Sport which rides very well, but, I'm getting a little bored with it. I'm a student and ride between 1-2 miles each way to school buildings, work, friends' houses, downtown, just for fun, etc... So I don't need something crazy, just functional, fast, and good lookin'.

My debate is between these two, though I still have to hit up a couple local stores. I'm also open to suggestions!

I'm no expert on bikes, but for the most part I know what I want (I think?). I've done research, and they both seem acceptable for what I need. ANY advice is appreciated!

For the short distance you will be riding, anything will work. My guess is that the Madison will be a lot lighter than the Draft.

You have a Schwinn World Sport.

Does it have steel rims?

I think I might try to track down a set of alloy wheels and just ride the Schwinn. It's a bike you could lock up around campus without worrying about thieves.

Well, you want to change bikes because:

I'm getting a little bored with it.
You like both of the bikes you're looking at, and one of your considerations:

. . .and good lookin'.
My advice is to buy the one you think looks best out of the two. :thumb:

N+1,... make the un attractive schwinn stop better with alloy rims,
to go on campus or steal-a-bike central...
and buy a second bike that has better performance
to do longer recreational weekend and bike club rides..

Ride them both and see which one you like the best.

Well, part of the reason I want to upgrade is because my current bike could use about one hundred dollars worth of tuning up (wheels, brakes...ugh) that I've been putting off. It rides well but sometimes I can't help feeling it's reaching the end of its life.

With that said, I don't want to exchange a crappy old bike for a crappy new bike and throw an extra hundred down the drain. I only have to go 2 miles max at a time, but make several of those trips a day and don't want to arrive in a huff because I've been carting a clunker around the city. I'm leaning towards the Draft, so I guess at this point my question is does anyone see a reason NOT to buy it?

Perhaps you should ask this question in the Single Speed and Fixed gear forum. You will probably find people who have broad knowledge about these bikes. You don't really have a serious "commute", but more of a ride around town bike. Those are nice looking pics, but I know nothing about that class of bike. You might want to consider weight of these bikes.

You might also find somethiing decent on CL in this price range.

I'm inferring that you are not inclined to doing the maintenance yourself. That's fine, but I seriously doubt your bike is "reaching the end of its life". All bikes need maintenance at some point, and I don't think the wear parts for your Schwinn are any more expensive than those for a new(er) bike.
