Nicest Morning of the Week here. The breeze was in my face but mild and welcome. I was kinda doggin it for the last mile though...this is my first week where i've ridden all 4 days of the week so far and I think i'm feelin it just a little. Still, I'd love to make tomorrow my first full week with no car. :thumb:
And man did I ever see a lot of Roadkill today. Nasty stuff too. Like pancake squirrels and birds that weren't quick enough. Worst was this ultra nasty Opossum that was way fresh...he was basically riped in half and you could totally see his severed spinal cord. :twitchy: ew. I'm takign a different route home. |
Had the heart monitor on for the first time this morning, clear and warm. Only hit 140 bpm, downhill. Uphill on the way home should be interesting.

It's been cool and wet all week and the riding has still been pretty nice... the sun has come out today and it looks like we'll be getting some spring time temperatures.
I keep tweaking out the commuter / tourer and and loving the little changes like the new triple, new brakes (Avid Shorty's), and a new stem which is a little shorter and a little taller and has really made for a perfect fit on the bike. I'll be taking the long commute through the valley as much as possible now and look forward to the nearly 1000 foot climb to get out. |
Didn't commute by bike today, since I was feeling a bit wrecked this morning. Thought I was getting a little case of influenza. Feeling a lot better now, went to the local hardware store (by bike obviously) to get me a bunch of nuts and bolts for mounting the luggage rack. By now, the luggage rack is mounted, looks a bit weird in my opinion since I'm not used to the bike looking like that ;)
Anyway, tomorrow morning I'll be working on my commuter bike, making sure the cables are in tip top shape again. Will change the cables in a couple of months though... |

No ride today. My wife has today and tomorrow off because she's working the weekend; we try to get these days together. Probably a good thing I didn't ride, as my legs were very tired on the ride home yesterday (15 mph headwind didn't help) and a fellow commuter reported that there's acrid smoke in the area because of the wildfires to the east. :(

Dang it!
Windy as all heck. Plus, my saddle slipped a couple weeks ago on a century and I adjusted it a tad too high. The end result was my knee hurting like heck. It reappeared again and made this commute very painful. I do think I finally have the height dialed in for my seat post and the new saddle but my knee was so far gone that I won't be able to tell if it works till next week. I am taking the geared road bike tomorrow. Annoyed knee + properly fitted bike + gears + coasting = good. :p |
Windy day today, in Milwaukee. I've been lucky enough to miss the storms on my way in and out...
Nothing of real significance to report, outside of the fact that I'm starting to get into better shape. My 8 Mile commute has been roughly five to seven minutes shorter, on average, every day this week. |
didn't get to ride today, which was lame. I spent the whole day thinking "I can't believe I drove my ***king car today." But I keep hearing you have to take a day off every now and again. So there I was... Watching my gas gauge slowly move southward the whole way.
Back on the bike tomorrow morning, for sure. Funny how quickly you can come to despise something you spent 11,000 dollars on. Now if I could just figure out how to put the damn rack on my cannondale. Pretty sure it's impossible, haha... |
Fantastic day today.
Nice ride in, and then I had a meeting over at a different office 15km away. Hurrah! The perfect opportunity to put in a perfectly justified 30km on the bike in work hours. And nice weather too - bit of a headwind, but nice and sunny without being hot. Lovely. |
Hey all, I haven't been here in a while but it's cool to see so many new commuters posting! Welcome to the addiction! Hope you enjoy your stay.
I've still been at it but feel like I must be growing bored with my commute. It's far less eventful than riding in Rochester was. So I have been entertaining myself by riding as much of the ride as I can with no hands. I can do about 80% easily, I could do more if I didn't have to stop every once in a while or go up a couple hills. Another way I have been livening up the commute is breaking out the cruisers on the sunny days. This is what I rode to work today: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/...ff30c7b599.jpg loaded with all my regular commuting gadgets. Sticks out like a sore thumb at the bike rack at work: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3172/...ef7da89442.jpg Almost as bad as the bike I rode last Thursday: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2400/...52f715b4f8.jpg Keep on rollin :) |
It's Friday!!! Great temp out there this this morning. Today makes 15 out of 20 work days I've ridden this month. I'm damn proud of that. As long as I stick to my plan, I'll be a full-time rider next month. The "spare tire" isn't coming off as quickly as I thought it would, but that doesn't bother me anymore; I'm riding and I feel good.
In other news, I saw 5 other bikes today that I haven't seen before. Less carbon waste today ... nice! |
Another beautiful morning. Blue sky. Sunny. Temps in the mid 50sF. Rode with one dude on an MTB for 2 or 3 miles but he seemed to bog down on the slightest of inclines, so eventually I passed. Caught up to another guy on an older road bike. Passed him too, and caught up to another rider right before I left the MUP for the streets.
On the ride home yesterday, I ushered a garter snake off the MUP. :) |
ride home last night went well and this mornings ride was great as well. No problem with the air quality degradation - at least I don't think - who knows, maybe I will fall over dead later on - the day is still young
have a great weekend everyone |
it was an enjoyable ride, very little wind and the sun was bright...left the house a little later than i usually do, i think next week i may mix it up a bit and try a new route which may make things a bit more interesting and longer
enjoy the weekend you cyclists you~ |
On the way home last night the conditions were perfect for a new max speed record. There was a stiff tailwind and i have one long sloping hill just outside of Nisku. I accelerated slowly all the way, about 3/4 down i hit 55kph... then i hammered on it and hit 68.7kph at 120+ rpm in my hardest gear. Fun fun.

Sunrise on the Trinity Trail this morning was just stunning. Best commute of the year, so far.

I hate Toronto. What's with all the rain? Or at least rain predictions...:troll:
|
I was about 2 miles from my destination, when I saw in the distance.. a wall of rain that was pretty impressive.. quickly detoured about 2 blocks to the people mover, got to work after worst of rain passed by, but about 20 minutes later than I would have had I just hammered through it.
Deciding factor was lack of visibility, rain isnt' bad, but if cars can't see you, that makes it easier to hit you... Happy weekend! |
Didn't get to ride in today; I over slept. :/ I must have hit the alarm button last night when I was moving things around in my room. Oh well.

Ride home last night was pretty good. Wind was up - 25-30 MPH, pretty steady, and in my face for half ther ride. I was tired starting out, so had a good mindset - gear down and ride, don't worry about speed. Made it home in decent time allowing for the wind, and felt good when I got there. I did have a bad traffic encounter on the way. Made a right turn onto a uphill section of a two-lane road with no shoulder. The hill's not major, but it's a small-ring start as the transition from one street to the next is pretty steep from a dead stop. Traffic was clear as I turned, but I saw a Mack truck of some sort cresting a hill about a quarter mile to my left as I entered the lane. Kept an eye on him in my mirror - he was coming pretty fast, well over the 35 MPH speed limit. Heard him gear down and slow, a bit too close behind me. We crested another rise, and he downshifts and accelerates to pass. I thought it was fine until I realized he was pulling a long flatbed trailer with a bulldozer on it - he was LONG and SLOW and didn't have enough room to pass due to the oncoming Escalade in the other lane. If I'd seen how long he was I would have bailed down the grass slope off the road, but I didn't catch it until too late - he missed me with the tires of the trailer by no more than 18 inches as he moved fully back into our lane to miss the Escalade. Idiot.
No ride today - celebrating anniversary with my wife tonight and have some errands to run to get everything ready for the surprise I have planned for her. Have a good weekend all - catch you next week! |
Second day this week commuting on one of the fixed gear bikes. The geared bikes were becoming too easy :) The narrow tires and light weight pretty much make up for the lack of gears, when I compare it to my mountain bike based commuter. No rest through coasting though and I have to practice leaning my body more than the bike, to prevent pedal strike in turns.

Thank god. Back on the bike today. It was a perfect day for the commute in the Eggo. Decided to try a new route and take it REALLY easy all the way in. Added 10 minutes to my ride, but it was great. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna change to riding that way every day. It's beautiful down there...
Fighting the urge to just go order the xtracycle today. I told myself I have to stick with this for at least 3 months before I'm allowed to buy an xtra [which will mean having to buy a new MTB, since I can't give that up and I only have the one bike.] |
Nice ride in today. Great weather, hoping for more for the ride home.
|
Nice morning. Found myself at a traffic light with FOUR other cyclists - a first. We were quite the brightly colored flock for a couple of blocks, then went our separate ways.
|
Took a shorter commute in today. Wife dropped me off outside of her office, about 7 miles from where I work. After getting a little lost, I found my route just as the sky darkened and the headwinds picked up. I pushed hard and got to work 2 minutes before the rain hit HARD. Luckily for me I missed it, and it only rained for a few minutes.
Unluckily for my coworker, he did not miss it and got dumped on. :( His sadness was short lived while we all stood around and drooled over his new shiny (and wet) Bianchi Pista. |
