Very mellow. Rode most of the way through my neighborhood no-handed. Just for fun.

I had a kamikaze pants clip today. I put on tan pants this morning, so I grapped the springy Dahon pants clip that came with my folding bike before I left the house. I was on the platform waiting for the train, and I pulled the clip off. It spring back to it's original shape and threw itself on the train tracks.

pinch flatted today on a trail on the way home. got the wheel and tire off easily, got out the spare tube... having levers, a tube, etc. made me kinda happy b/c i wasn't sure, have been changing bags a lot, meant to ride home on the road... I.e. was UNPREPARED...

so anyway, got that far, pulled out the pump to start the tube and... hmm, schrader only? no flip-over thing? blah, it's my wife's pump, my daughters destroyed mine a long time ago and i meant to carry c02 and... damn, better call the wife.

i hate getting picked up.

i blame my rack being back-ordered. i hope it comes in today. :)

Two flats today...and my pump is conveniently out of commission at the moment. Fun walk home...

Twas a great commute with the new rig, a Jamis Aurora. About 1/2 way home, rain was visible in the distance but ducked into a Valvoline Qwik Change (how ironic), and missed most of the rain. Commute is 15 to 20 miles depending on route, 18 today.

It was so nice out this morning, chilly but not cold, not too windy, and quiet. I realized I was going to be getting off work late, but the moment was great because I realized I was going to be riding home in that beautiful weather. The ride did not disappoint.

Just completed week 5 of btw every day. Have a perfect score. It's been very hot here with record breaking temps of up to 100+ but I've enjoyed every minute. Gas prices is only a small part of why I bike but it makes for just 1 more reason. As if I needed one. Just got to get the dwifey interested in doing her part.
Later,
Tony

I tried to stop for coffee, but my usual coffee stop was closed. It opens late on Saturday. So I decided that since I needed something to wake me up, I should just do intervals! Whee! Thank goodness for baby wipes, body spray, and spare deodorant.

This was absolutely a screwy week for bike commuting in NC. We started the week with the hottest weather we've ever had this early in the year -- 4 days straight when the temperatures hit 100F or higher. Then a large wildfire that has been burning near the coast sent a huge plume of smoke over the eastern half of the state, with high levels of air pollution. I skipped riding Monday due to the heat, but managed to ride Tues, Weds and Thursday. However, the smoke got so bad on Thursday that I ended up catching a ride home with a coworker rather than riding in such polluted air. Drove again Friday because the smoke was still bad in the morning. Hopefully we won't have another week like this, but it could happen again because they are saying the fire could burn for weeks if not months.

Commute was great until I got downtown before going up the hill and noticed a broken spoke in the rear wheel :( , it was the bus for that part of the trip. On Monday I'll get extra spokes.
What can I say...if it's manmade...it's a FORD...Fix Or Repair Daily...I don't care what it is.
Some guy yelled at me to get off the road since bikes don't belong there...I wonder how much longer he'll be on the road ;) ???
Gas prices I imagine will not come down or stabilize any time soon. :(
I miss my truck and look forward to driving it for camping, etc.

Took my car to a garage where I do my own work. Brought the bike along just in case I couldn't finish before the shop closed. I haven't ridden in over a week due to a knee problem that cropped up when I switched to clipless.

As luck would have it, I hit a snag and the shop closed before I was able to finish up (struts and wheel bearings). So, I packed everything up, mounted my trusty steed and rode the ten miles home.

Hot DAYUM that was fun! :D Light rain cooled me off, nice scenery, light traffic and lots of energy. I'll be using platforms until I can get a proper fitting for these pedals. Knee was kinda iffy, but I took it easy and everything was fine. I even made a side trip to the store to get groceries. :)

I'm hoping to get back into full-time commuting and errand-running again soon. The X-rays showed arthritis in my knee which is no surprise - 18 years in the Army does that to ya. Going back to the massage threrapist next week for more knee support work, so we'll see how it goes...

I'm looking forward to the ride back to the shop tomorrow! :)

The ride home was hot and slow. I didn't respect the heat yesterday, and nearly fainted when I got home. Today, I wore my shorts and took it super-slow, just dawdling along the MUP and enjoying the scenery.

My commute to work from home was easy. It is only a four mile ride, downhill, and it was cooler than usual. Back home was bad even though it is a short ride. Uphill, strong headwind (like 30 mph gusts strong), it was 92 degrees, and pollen in the air like no other. I had to stop two or three times to stop and sneeze and blow my nose :(.

Vodalus 06-15-08 01:29 AM

today on my way in i was stopped next to a guy with what i would assume was a track bike on top of his car. we both kind of checked each other out and smirked, me because he was probably driving his bike to the shop right up the road for repairs, and him probably because of my heavy aluminum but oh so useful commuter ride.

aggressau 06-15-08 04:18 AM

Nice, quiet ride tonight for my nightshift. No wind and about 12C.

I did get a bad cramp in the calf of my standing leg though when I went to lift my other leg over the seat to coast up the driveway. Been looknig up causes and I think it was because I hardly drank anything today.

I'll try and drink at least 4 bottles before I head home.

My commutes this week have been great. I ride 3 days a week now and drive two so I can take care of the odds and ends. But this week I've extended my morning ride so I can go along lake Champlain. At 5 am it is beautiful. Get to watch the sun rise, catch all those early bugs in my teeth. It extends my ride another 3 miles but that's ok as I'm also training for a Tinman. So it's now 20 miles each way. I honestly can't say that I'm getting any faster, but it really is a great way to spend part of my day. And in this part of NY, the traffic is really minimal. The problem is for me, the season is just too short. Anyway, good/safe commutes to all.

girljen 06-15-08 09:06 AM

The ride in was awesome. I stopped at Starbucks and saw one of the ambulances that I dispatch. I ended up hanging out and talking to the crew for a while. Then I got to ride down the big hill, and see an absolutely beautiful sunrise. Days like today are why I love bike commuting.

Commuting to work at 4:00am has its advantages. Almost no traffic, nice and peaceful and except for the occasional run-in with road kill it is pretty safe. Coming home is the challenge, traffic here is terrible.

Good Solid Commute Home at 420 Am For Me. I Work Third Shift 7 Days A Week And RIDE Everyday Rain Or Shine, Snow, Hail, Lightning or Wind. I Ride Singlespeeds and Occassionally my KHS DJ 200 With Upgrades. I Have No RACKS,SADDLES, or Water Bottles. Weight Is Key. I Carry a Multi Tool and two tubes and 1 Tire. UR Karma Must Be Good To Pull This Off and Luck Must Like You. Most People keep a Full Kit N Kaboodle In Even a 3-day a Week Ride.

mangosalsa 06-16-08 06:02 AM

Nice temp for riding this AM. All went well except for that early-ride "almost" when one of Canada's geese decided to hop off the curb in front of me. He nearly became a small throw pillow! I saw 5 other riders this morning, which is always good. After riding through North Carolina's version of Hell last week [100+ temps, forest fire smoke, etc.] this morning felt like I was being towed in it was so nice.

ATTN: Any local Triangle bike commuters want to get together next month? Maybe a grill-out somewhere [Crabtree?] and heated discussions about traffic laws, Conti Vs. Schwalbe, to Fred or not to Fred, etc.

vtjim 06-16-08 06:12 AM

Low 60sF. Overcast. Plenty of rain last night, so there were damp spots on the MUP. Only saw a couple of riders going the other way. Saw another kitty too.

You ever ding your bell at pedestrians and they duck? :D That was a first for me.

stockboy 06-16-08 06:25 AM

Just started late last week here in Houston. The morning weather is freckin awesome between 4:30 am and 6:30 am. This morning I took a wrong turn around Herman park, ended up at Reliant Stadium instead of downtown Houston. It was a fun detour though, the road was smooth and it was easy to keep the bike at around 18-19 mph.

Heck I didn't even mind the detour, though I problably will this afternoon when I ride in the heat and need some leg power!
