Yesterday was really nice, apart from the headwind on the way in! I installed my new cyclometer and was very pleased to see I can cruise at 35 kph - mind you, that WAS on the way home, with a tailwind :D

I have a scratchy throat and cottony ears today so am debating whether to ride - not sure if it'll unclog the pipes, or make things worse. Lungs are clear so far. There's a HORRIBLE cold going around and I'm a little surprised it's taken this long to get to me.

nice ride, I am definitely speeding up with the weather. Allergies are kicking in, natch.

First commute of the year!! It was GREAT. I only got yelled at one time by some guy in a big SUV. I think he said "Get off the road.." Well it is my road too. When I got to work there was a large Trek bike in the place I hide my bike. So, maybe this commuting thing may catch on.

The ride home last night was warm (66F) but it was headwind all the way. Took some of the fun out, but not much. The ride in this morning was great. I moved my seat forward about 1/2" (ReBike) and that allowed me to use one gear higher most of the way. Temp was 51F and no wind. Looking forward to the ride home tonight.

perfect sunny, hilly 40 mile ride into work this morning (Storrs to Meriden, CT via route 66). After riding out there last night my legs were a little heavy, but it only took me 15 mins longer on the return trip. 80 miles in 26 hours, I'm done for the week! lol

neilfein 04-17-08 11:58 AM

Beautiful weather today, mid-40s and almost no wind. Going home wil be even nicer - almost 60 F.

It's going to snow this weekend...

Yeah, that sucks. Kind of ruins my "I just got a new bike!!!" mood.

Had a great ride to work today - great weather here in San Francisco, Ca.

70 and sunny - hardly any wind and the motorists respected the cyclists.

My commute to and from work is roughly 9 miles - Mostly downhill on the way in and some steep climbs on the way home.

noahs44 04-17-08 01:47 PM

Not the best. Got my first "cycling" ticket this morning.

Residential street, no cars in sign. I get to a 4-way stop... I slow, then roll through the stop sign. Lights flash and a motorcycle cop decides to ticket me. Seriously...

This is the morning after two crazy women walk out in front of me last night when I was on my way home from work. After almost walking out in front of a car, she then walks out in front of me. I stop to avoid slamming into her and she goes on and on about me almost hitting her... and I said something to the effect of, "don't you look for traffic when you cross the street?" Both incidents happened on 17th street. I think I'm going to avoid that one for a while...

yesterdays commute was uneventful but nice temps

no commute in this morning due to appointment, but brought my bike in the van and the wife dropped me off. I'll be heading home tonight around 10pm - always look forward to night rides!

jasonpraxis 04-17-08 06:19 PM

Great. Saw lots of other commuters, and the drivers have started to share the roads again: yielding right of way, passing with enough space between us, rolling down their windows to share music as we wait for the lights to change.

Pig_Chaser 04-17-08 08:47 PM

Arg... headwind on the way home nearly killed me. Down to 15kph and working hard to reach that :( oh well, the worst day cycling is still better than the best day driving.

Really? Wow. All the drivers around here are acting as though they've never seen a bike in their lives...

ride home last night was excellent as usuall - about 65F

This morning though was only 48F and all I wore was a short sleeve jersey and shorts - a little chilly! Although I think I am getting used to that now - got tired of putting on winter gear for the mornings only to have to stuff it in my sack for the afternoon - figure I'll just suck it up!

It will be 80F here today and 'Orange' ozone level warning - first taste of the coming summer I guess.

Enjoy the weekend everyone

Great ride in this morning. It's gotten a little warmer each day, with the temperature about 46F on my way in. Supposed to hit the low 80s this afternoon. The mornings have been unseasonably cold for NC all week until today, with lows in the low to mid-30s. Afternoons have been a dream, mid-70s. My legs were very tired to start the week after riding 236 miles last week, 196 of those miles over the weekend on a coastal bike tour. Today was the first morning this week that my legs had any snap in them. So I guess I'm recovered enough to trash my legs all over again this weekend. Isn't cycling fun?

pedlpusher 04-18-08 06:29 AM

I had a wonderful ride in as it was sunny and warmer. It is great to hit the road and hear all of the birds and sounds of the morning.I am not saying that I am better than anyone else. But as all of the cars pass me by on my left (and I pass them by when they are stuck in traffic) I often wonder why more people aren't riding too? Our national need for foreign oil would go away overnight if many of the single drivers simply took to biking. JMO.Pedlpusher.

I stopped for coffee on the way to work. I locked my bike to the patio railing, since there is no bike lock. The bike was on the inside of the patio. A great big SUV backed in to it anyway; and even worse, it backed in to my brother's Surly Long Haul Trucker!! My kickstand is gone and my pedal is cracked. Other than the trauma to my bike, it was a good ride. Yesterday afternoon was my first time riding down 52nd Ave. in traffic. I feel so much more confident taking the lane than hanging out on the shoulder.

The ride home this morning was slow and laid-back. I spent the whole time spinning in granny gears and enjoying the chance to be in my own headspace.

jpdesjar 04-18-08 06:58 AM

good ride, sun was shining and there was little wind
stopped at the local bagel shop and treated myself to a sesame bagel with walnut raisin cream cheese
i am glad i made that stop...someone already told me i had cream cheese in my mustache

should be another stellar ride home too then vacation begins

stayed up a bit later than usual last night so i was a little foggy this morning

starla 04-18-08 07:09 AM

Awesome...chilly and invigorating. Didn't get to ride yesterday, so I needed this.

Tude 04-18-08 07:14 AM

It was .... too freakin short. This is the perfect riding weather that I love --- low 50's sunny and no wind - in fact (unfortunately) I got to work about 6 minutes earlier than normal - I flew.

Pig_Chaser 04-18-08 07:21 AM

Cut short. One of my panniers got sucked into the spokes. My panniers are the cheap thin fabricy kind so i didn't loose control but slowed down in a hurry. A quick investigation revealed the cause... my rack was broken into two pieces. Luckily I had only gone about a km so i rode carefully back home and took truck to work. Off to MEC this weekend i guess.

dalmore 04-18-08 07:45 AM

Caged it today. Was getting tailgated by an impatient soul in a SUV. Then they got pulled over for something! It was a organized traffic trap of some sort. So it could have been for something other than tailgating me. Apparently, I was not in violation of whatever they were checking for.

arnijr 04-18-08 08:02 AM

Went to the bike shop yesterday to get a new bottom bracket. They were really busy but sold me the part and handed me the tools I needed to do the switch. Bottom bracket tools are some of the bicycle tools I don't have yet. When I took out the old bottom bracket the right hand side bearings fell out in pieces and the bottom bracket was full of nasty shavings. I knew it was shot but man was it ever. After installing the new bottom bracket I bettered my usual avg speed by almost 2km/h, both on the way back yesterday and on the ride in this morning. Now I want new wheels and gears to see how much difference that will make. Should just start with getting off my lazy butt and truing the rear wheel.
After commuting through the winter (and replacing the bottom bracket), I'm now making the same times on the mtb on slicks as I was making on the road bike last summer. The route is still a mess with construction and gravel detours, to say nothing of the sand that still has not been swept off the MUP, so no riding the road bike in to work for a while.

vtjim 04-18-08 09:03 AM

Nice this morning. Low 40s. Dead calm air. Sunny. I'm getting my legs back.

I love beaver. Soft, furry beaver. Wait, it's not what you think. Earlier this week, a beaver had felled a tree and the branches were just touching the edge of the MUP. This morning, the beaver had returned to the scene of the crime and gnawed off all the branches. :D They must be building a dam somewhere.

deanack 04-18-08 10:12 AM

Boy were my legs stiff last night!! Yesterday was my first day back on the bike for commuting. I think my seat was too low from my trail riding the last weekend. But I am back on the bike today and hope to get in over 2,000 miles in this summer. Michigan is just too cold and snowy for me in the winter.
