I nearly collided with a deer this morning. It jumped right in front of me. Missed it by less than a meter by braking HARD. I stopped, and we looked at each other for a while, after which the deer (rather offended it seemed) walked off into the woods. Nice.

I just checked an online rain-radar-satellite-site-thingy, and the return trip is looking to be a wet one...

Overcast, low 60s(!). Started out kind of dark, actually. One of my faster rides, even with the strongest headwind of the week so far. 400 watts! :) I had a motive for going fast though. Two serious-looking cyclists were stopped at the entrance to the MUP near my house. One roadie with aero bars and a guy on an MTB all decked out in appropriate clothing. I said hi as I passed but they just looked at me. I thought I'd see if I could prevent a reeling-in, and took off at maximum cruise. Never saw 'em again. Either they're slow, or they weren't trying. *giggle*

Very humid and warm this morning. I was still sweating an hour after I got to work. Must have ridden harder than I realized. My green-light mojo finally returned today. Although I still caught my share of red lights, I didn't have to wait long at any of them. Made a big difference in my commute time. Left home 5 minutes later than yesterday but still got to work earlier. Good chance of rain finally moving into NC later today. Guess I'll snap on my Race-Blade fenders sometime during the day. I bought them in June but took them off after a couple of weeks because it never rains in NC any more since we're in the midst of a terrible drought.

Today's commute was uneventful ... which is good! :)

Switched to a bigger backpack though:( as I am packing my lightweight rain gear now as well as work out clothes for the gym I have use of at school.

Makes jumping curbs a little sloppy but I need the space for my stuff.

DataJunkie 10-03-07 07:22 AM

I had to ride 14 miles to the light rail like last week. Nice fun short ride.
At least today I did not overheat. Riding hard and then suddenly stopping throws my stomach for a loop. This morning I started removing clothing in the last mile or two. That worked much better.

Picked up a piece of glass in the rear tire (why is it always the rear tire these days?) for a flat. On the plus side, had my easiest/fastest time yet at patching it and getting back on the road. The rest of the ride was less crowded than usual, having missed the worst of the schooltime rush.

Allycat24 10-03-07 07:49 AM

Humid and warm for this time of year but a nice ride in. Saw 2 deer walking down the MUP, just minding their own business and completely unperturbed by me.

It's not just "these days". It's usually the rear tire, since it carries much more weight. I personally don't recall ever having a puncture flat on the front.

Cool and dry. Sunrise is getting late enough that I'm leaving just as the orb is picking its head up above the mountains. It's pretty, but can be a bit blinding at times.

Pthoooey!

My commute takes me along about 1/2 mile of the towpath of the Delaware and Raritan Canal near Trenton NJ, and for the last couple of evenings the air has been thick with thousands of tiny gnats. Since I leave the house while it's still dark in the morning, I've forgotten my sunglasses... so I ride along with my head turned to one side, leading eye closed, other eye squinting... picking up hundreds of bugs on my face, caught in my ear, stuck in my beard, clothes, arm hair... it is really disgusting, and they tickle. I hope I remember this on my way home tonight, I'll take a detour to avoid them.

Ack!

Nice cool morning, A little headwind in the beginning. I left the house 15 min earlier then normal. WOW what a change in traffic. I think my new step off time will be 0530. I really like the lighter traffic. Have a great commute everyone.

bfromcolo 10-03-07 09:46 AM

brrrrr cold, well actually 43F, but in shorts, fingerless gloves, and I just got a haircut. First 5 miles I was thinking about what genius I was to dress so appropriately and then I warmed up.

HardyWeinberg 10-03-07 09:47 AM

Definitely that 'no appropriate clothing' time of the year. Today I have short sleeve t-shirt plus raincoat. That combo was too sweaty at the end of the ride in (no rain). We'll see what happens for lunchtime errands and then trip home, of course.

caloso 10-03-07 10:00 AM

Dropped my bag at my bike locker and then met my buddy for a 20 mile out and back before work. It was great. We were just talking about random stuff. I was on the edge of breathing hard but could hold a conversation and then I looked down and we were doing 21mph. I think I'm fitter than I thought I was. Woohoo!

Flimflam 10-03-07 10:22 AM

Been using my mountain bike the past couple of days, so it's been a little tougher going, but fun nonetheless. Been cooler with the breeze, still somewhat warm though.
Nothing crazy to report that I recall, lots of construction and movie filming making and breaking up the routes here and there.

Interesting last week of commuting to work here in NC before my move to MA next week. Yesterday on my way to work I got pulled over by a cop for running a red light. Luckily he was nice and just told me to wait if there are cars waiting. Fine by me. Then on the way home I had a crazy lady yell at me for taking up the whole lane approaching a stop sign. I caught up to her about 3/4 of a mile later at a stop sign and told her that she made it really far. She then tried to tell me to ride on the side of the road/sidewalk/etc. I then tell her that I should be treated like a car, which she proceeds to say "then why aren't you at the back of the line?". By this time I was almost laughing as I proceeded to the front of the line of cars which just made her even madder. Seems like she wants to treat me like a cyclist only when waiting in line but when actually approaching a stop sign just hug the side of the road. Crazy people out lately. Today is my last ride, gotta drive the next two days to clean out stuff from my office and do errands. Gonna take the long way home later on.

maddyfish 10-03-07 01:36 PM

Just fine .3 miles of pleasant 75F

deanack 10-03-07 01:41 PM

It was fun today. The weather guys was reporting rain moving into the area in the next couple hours. So I got ready and started out. I could feel the rain coming up behind me all the way into work. I got a few drops but that was it. The guards at the building like my new light. I have the Blackbutn X3 and I use the flashing setting. They said it looks like a cop pulling in the drive in the morning.

I have a 4.5 mile commute in Morristown, NJ. 1/2 on suburban roads and 1/2/ through hiking/biking paths going through the woods which is paved (badly rippled) as well as gravel paths. The leaves are getting thicker which make the ride more dangerous.

It usually takes me 20 minutes with a very steep hill that leads to my office's parking lot at the end. I always walk the bike up the hill. Call me a "wus", but I'm still new to biking and the proliferation of sweat it takes to make it up the hill is not worth it just before I walk into work. Pushing the bike up the hill is tough enough.

Today was a beautiful morning, as have been the last 60 in my neck of the woods, and my commute was delightful as usual. I started commuting in July and haven't had a bad day yet. I'm very lucky in my commute in that I have no lights, I go through the woods and deal with very few cars. If I didn't have the hill it would be perfect.

Winter is coming and I'm looking forward to see how I deal with it.

53 F and 85% humidity this morning. It was a little nippy for just a long sleeve shirt. I needed a wind breaker. Another great ride in.

madhouse 10-03-07 06:44 PM

Awesome! The weather was perfect! It was mid 40’s F this morning and I was dressed just right. I had a slight head wind on the way in but nothing to write about… Followed by a 20mph tail wind on the way home… Yippie!!!! I averaged 20mph without even trying!!!

buzzman 10-03-07 07:12 PM

hammered in. hammered home. now I'm hammered.

mtnwalker 10-03-07 08:30 PM

I found a new route today. It added approx. 4-5 miles and less lights to deal with. This allowed me really concentrate on my pedaling and cadence on my way home tonight. I would like to make this my route to work too but it would mean leaving 1/2 hour earlier than before. I'm excited. :D

High Cadence 10-03-07 08:32 PM

It was fookin' awesome this morning!!! On the way back home I stopped at the bike shop and picked up some new panniers. I'm stylin', now.

39F on the way in...probably 49 on the way home tonight. Supposed to be 28-30 tomorrow am. A little chilly. :)

Cody Broken 10-03-07 10:47 PM

Commuted home on the Xtrahopper (Rock Hopper/Xtracycle). Decided I need a longer seat post. Can't get proper leg extension, Even with the seat post 1-1/2" beyond the "minimum insertion" line. Rock Hopper's 17" frame is too small for me, and I've grown too fond of the thing to give it up. $30 thrift store bike is one of my babies.

So it will look silly, but it must be done.

Cloudy as hell, but no rain. Cool and perfect riding weather.
