Not much commuting this week. Things have gotten VERY slow at the bike shop. I rode to work Monday and Tuesday but didn't work Wednesday, Thursday, or today. :o
No work = No commuting = Smaller paycheck.
And with this crappy off and on rain we've had for the last few days I haven't even gone out for an enjoyable ride on my road bike. :(

Humid but fun.

Got honked at by someone when I took the lane and refused to let them right-hook me. I'll take a honk over a hook every day.

Most of my ride was great. The weather is a little warmer, I stopped and removed my windbreaker. The fog they were talking about on the TV was not around and the traffic was light. I was almost to work and I just needed to cross Mound Road at 17 mile. I was in the right lane and the turn lane was full of cars, some bozo in a SUV comes around my left side and cuts me off to get into the turn lane. What, he could not wait 5 seconds for me to pass and then pull into a stopped line of cars for the red light???I did not hit him, but I did give my disc brakes a workout. I was hoping that he would pull into GDLS and I could talk to him, but he was not a fellow employee.

took the cruiser this morning. After my harrowing ride home last night I decided it would be more fun to slowly roll in, sticking to the sidewalks (the only time I can justify riding on the sidewalks is when I am rolling on a rusty old single speed cruiser). It's much less stressful than being on the road with crazy rochester drivers, and I can wear my fun vintage driving cap to match my vintage bike. :)

Nice ride in today. No trailer to daycare, just co-bike w/ 6 yr old to his school, so less traffic. My tension level w/ traffic had been building all week, good to get a break.

Another really fine day! 65f, no wind, clear. A bit of fog in low spots, but not on the road. Quite scenic really looking down from the slightly higher road over the top of the fog. Forecast is for mid 80's this afternoon with a tail wind.

Traffic was a bit heavy for friday, but I was a little early and was just hitting the school traffic.

Weather's been cooling off a bit here. Due to that and a co-worker's interest in bike commuting, I was finally motivated to ride twice this week, my first bike commutes in a few weeks (getting a motor scooter was a big setback there - hard to beat for efficiency and ease of commute!). Wednesday I rode my 1965 Czech-made Velamos 3 speed. The commute (14 miles R/T) is the longest ride I've ever taken it on and made me realize just how hard its seat is and just how much I need more than 3 gears. Still great for a quick trip to the corner store though. Decided to nickname it "Tenbukthree," reflecting what I paid for it and how many speeds it has.

Today I rode the much more efficient "550buk7" (a reformed 1986 Trek). What a joy to ride! Whew!

Next week it's creeping back up to the 90s, so I'll probably wuss out and go back to the scooter for the week.

Yesterday was great. Real cold in the morning so I put my 25 year old irreplaceable silk balaclava over my bald head. About 2/3 of the way there, I stopped at a red light, removed it and put it in my jersey pocket...I thought. Turns out I put in between the pocket and the hip belt on my backpack. I didn't realize it was gone till 5pm when I went out again. Looked for it all the way and Found It about 5 feet from where I dropped it.

I also found a real good $20.00 Purby 3" paint brush.

caloso 10-05-07 11:18 AM

Third day this week I was able to meet up with my old riding buddy for an out-and-back tempo ride. Which means it's Friday and I already have 120 miles for the week. Awesome.

*** Nothing more to say other than we've been there. Especially the NY, CT area drivers. I've had cans thrown at me, cirgarette butts flicked at me, screamed at, drivers try to get within inches of me. Only consolation I can think of is ... glad I'm not them!. Ride on!

Today was my first wet riding on my road bike. I really didn't mind at all, albiet, it was warm and only slightly drizzling but still wet. I am 3/5 commuting this week. I feel so damn good when I get to work that I am really starting to dig it. I also believed that I wouldn't commute unless I left the house by 6 due to the traffic but I got my latest start today and all the cars were fine! I will say that the earlier the better though. I like the solitude of the earl morning commute. I've got this Monday off but my legs will see plenty of miles by my road and mountain bike.

bfromcolo 10-05-07 02:06 PM

Running late this morning and trying to push it, city maintenance crew put a 2 mile detour around a 1/2 mile section of MUP for some unknown reason naturally.

Broke my bell trying to warn old man wearing sound deadening radio headphones and walking dog on 20' retractable leash. The old man, dog, a biker coming from the other direction, and myself all came dangerously close to meeting on a blind corner at an underpass. 2nd closest call for me this year probably.

But it was 55F, perfect weather, so its all good I guess, except my bell.

And its almost 80F and sunny for the ride home, got to love fall, but the forecast is calling for possible snow Sunday...

Looks like I'm gonna have a wet ride home. After weeks with no rain, it finally started a steady drizzle this afternoon. I've had a set of RaceBlade fenders sitting in my office all summer not being used because it's been so dry I didn't see the point in dragging them around. Just put them back on my bike and had to make quite a few adjustments. Since the last time I used them, I switched to larger tires and they no longer had enough clearance. I'll find out this afternoon whether the fenders are worth the trouble. The only other day it has rained all summer I rode home without the fenders because I didn't have time to install them. On that day it was a warm rain and it felt good. My main problem with the rain is seeing when my eyeglasses get all spotted up, and worrying about whether car drivers see me. I'm planning to just take off my glasses before I leave work as they are worthless after a few minutes in the rain anyway.

Somebody passed me today. A black guy in regular (non-biking) clothes on quite a nice bike (much nice than my beater). Of course I had to catch up with him right away. Did. :) It's not every day that people pass me in Toronto, and every time it happens I take it as a challenge (unless the rider is clearly out of my league...)

The usual roads behaved weirdly today. One of the roads I typically take (St. Clair between Mt. Pleasant and Spadina) is a major road that is typically calmer and lower-key than other major roads in the area... but today people were driving on it like it was a highway, and cutting me off at intersections. WTH?..

scottmorrison99 10-06-07 10:43 PM

Colder today on the way in, 41 degrees. I took one of the geared bikes and made great time going to work. One the way home I just hit every red light. Still beats driving.

swifty 10-08-07 03:24 AM

Cold and foggy this morning. Actual temp was about 5 degrees Celsius (41 Fahrenheit), but the fog made the feel temperature a bit colder. Need more winter clothing.

vtjim 10-08-07 06:31 AM

Upper 40s. Rain. I bit the bullet and used full length legwear. If it wasn't raining I would have stuck with shorts alone. Passed a Fred but didn't see any other cyclists. Saw a total of 7 people on the MUP, 3 of whom were in the last hundred yards or so. Almost had the commute to myself!

I think Summer is over. 50s and 60s this week.

Absolutely the best morning on the year, for me. I woke up too early, having set my alarm for one hour ahead of time, on accident. So, I got an early jump on the day. The kids are off for Columbus Day, so the roads were pretty silent. Couple that with a 6:30 leave time, and I had my favorite roads, bascialy, all to myself.

Orion is back out and the crescent moon was sharing the spotlight with a very bright Venus this morning.
Had it not been for a train, that I probably could have beaten to the crossing, I would have set a new personal best on the way in.

Absolutely gorgeous.

Beautiful morning in NC as well. Temps in the high 60s when I left home. There was no moonlight, unlike last week, but my light system performed well. Monday is one of my recovery days, so I took it easy. Made great time anyway because I got lucky with the red lights. The ride was a pleasant contrast to my Friday afternoon commute home, which was miserable. It rained steadily all the way home, and I got soaked despite having my RaceBlade fenders finally installed, plus I got buzzed by a school bus that came uncomfortably close to hitting me while passing. I concluded that fenders really don't make much difference if it's really raining because you'll get soaked anyway. Spent about 15 minutes drying down my bike after I got home, removing the seatpost to drain out any water that got in the frame, and another 15 minutes on Sunday cleaning my bike and relubing the chain. I don't think I will make a habit of bike commuting in the rain, if I can help it. It just too much of a hassle, and we don't get that many rainy days anyway in NC.

nmanhipot 10-08-07 08:06 AM

Pleasant but cool. Saw a plain-clothes commuter on the tarmac this morning - puts a chill down your spine. Best guess is he was riding against traffic on the sidewalk. Didn't see a helmet or lights, either. Sad, very sad. Car was pulling right out of an apartment complex. The driver probably didn't look forward until he was on the hood.

I saw that! Very dramatic. It's great being able to catch glances of the night sky in the early morning. So much more enjoyable than when you're in a cage.

mrbrown 10-08-07 08:59 AM

Rode my Dahon Curve to work today, instead of the Hardrock mtb. It is a 7km (4.35 miles) ride through some very busy, rush hour Singapore traffic. Thinking maybe I should ride out earlier in the morning.

It was just stunning. I'm still beaming about it and it's 1:00. I've felt just AWESOME all day long. And you're right, it is pretty amazing what you can experience from the saddle of a bike that you normally would have no connection with in another vehicle.

EDIT: Actually, I just check and it wasn't Venus; it was Saturn that we saw this morning.

HardyWeinberg 10-08-07 12:34 PM

Nice morning. Just biked w/ 6 yr old to his school then out mup to work. 2 day break from trailering 2 yr old through downtown traffic good for head clearing.

scoatw 10-08-07 04:30 PM

No work today. But I did go out at 7:30am to pick up a newspaper. 68degrees, tanktop, shorts & sandals. 10 min ride. Cooler weather rolling in this week. Probably the last day of the year for that get-up. Spent part of the day installing mud flaps on my bike. Cost, less than $5.
