Dark. Hot. Humid. Lots of bugs. Bugs are a great motivator. You don't need to buy a fancy trainer. Just bike at night with no bug repellant. That'll get you motivated.

Javan 07-07-05 04:44 AM

Cool, 60, cloudy, slight (5-10 mph) headwind. Body is still chilled.

capejohn 07-07-05 05:54 AM

Brisk, windy, drizzle and clouds. The wind kept my average speed down. It took a while to get "in the groove". Played racquetball last night and was a little tuckered out. Recovered after a couple of miles and the rest was cake.

JOHN J 07-07-05 07:06 AM

good morning a wet one I may add.

I was getting tired of lousy weather and decided to ride regardless unless a tornado flood ...

I was up at 6 am and it was cloudy and cool no wind no rain so Ride I did, well about 2 miles out it started to pour and didnt stop untill now 9am est.

full Fenders are COOL!!! im nice and clean.

the rain was not a cold rain so it was refreshing to ride in.

have a great day

"John"

RonH 07-07-05 09:57 AM

Cloudy and cooler than usual after TS Cindy blew through last night.
A light mist seemed to be falling but I didn't get wet, just got on my glasses.
I expected to find a few traffic lights not working because of power outages but didn't come across any and no fallen trees or branches in the road.
I hope the ride home is as uneventful. :o

capejohn 07-07-05 11:14 AM

John J.
Lately when I think my commute was not so good I look at yours. Your the guy in the proverb with no feet.
You are getting all the weather we are just missing down here. It's almost raining here but not quite. I have been waiting for the heavy rains for a week. Nada..

Spudz 07-07-05 11:58 AM

One hour later in than yesterday and ten degrees warmer. Ugh. I really dislike hot weather riding!

Javan 07-07-05 01:37 PM

Forgot to add that a deer ran out in front of me today (10 feet away). It really made me glad I rode today. It occurred just when I was really starting to feel down about the ride in.

On another note, it was 59 when I left the apartment at 5:30 am. When I head home at 4, it will be mid 80's and super humid.

tulip 07-07-05 06:54 PM

fastest time of the summer this morning! Forgot my watch at work this afternoon, so I'll never know how my pm time compared. The rain held off, and I didn't get hit by a car, so things are good. I'm so glad that I'm a bike commuter in trying times like this.

VinMan 07-07-05 08:11 PM

7 Miles in hot & humid Tallahassee. After sitting at a desk all day, it's 20 or so minutes of bliss!!! (AGAIN!!) Some like it hot - but Dennis may spoil the weekend...

They need to fix that.

Nice ride in to work today through quiet residential city streets then out into the country on the bike path to a two lane main street. I was just turning right onto the bike path at a signal next to an entrance road to the college where I work when a (what else?) SUV cut me off, nearly forcing me into the light post. The offending vehicle ambled on down the road and I kept it in sight from my view on the path. When I saw it pull into the metro station lot and park, I decided to have a friendly chat with the driver, mostly just out of curiosity. The calm young woman was going through her purse, but rolled down the window and smiled. I asked if she had seen me back at the signal and she replied cheerfully, “Yes, I saw you. You weren't turning right were you? I signaled.” Fortunately I had been turning right as the large wheel cut across the entrance to the path, otherwise I would have been careening off the side of her vehicle. Her signaling was a moot point in that it all occurred behind me. “I was over into the lane.” Matter of disagreement, but I could see there was no use pressing a point, when she said, “that's dangerous there; they need to fix that.” Probably the last chance to fix that was papa's decision not to wear a condom. She was pleasant enough, though oblivious, no harm done and it was still a nice ride.

I regret not having taken the bike yesterday, which would have been a great day, but today was a nice ride in and a little cool, though the story will be different on the ride back home since it should be fairly hot, I hear. All cars were courteous and let me ride with no problems.

caloso 07-08-05 10:13 AM

Took a twenty mile detour (Clarksburg and W. Sac, for you Tomato Heads). Nice. Breezy but nice. Motorists on S. River Road were all safe and respectful and I waved to a handful of older cyclists (retirees?) heading to the Delta for a morning spin.

eastbaybob 07-08-05 10:27 AM

I started work at 5:00 AM this morning so I took the direct route to the office. Commute time for the 1.2 miles came in at less than 10 minutes. Because I left so early it was nice and cool for the ride.

For the week I commuted by bicycle 3 of 4 days of 75% of the time.

ahpook 07-08-05 02:40 PM

Good rides all week this week. Had a nice companion for the ride home last night -- Dave on the '81 Panasonic, hi if you're out there! -- and this morning it was a little cooler. Made it 4/4 working days this week on the bike. Hopefully next week my "escape pod" (2001 VW Beetle) will be sold, we'll be down to a 1 car family and the rest of the summer will stay nice n breezy!

Bolo Grubb 07-08-05 03:49 PM

my first ever commute by bicycle. Yay me!

Went pretty good, but I know there are a few things that will have to change.

First thing is I need different pedals. I have old style clips with straps and just do not like these. I am used to a clipless system on my road bike, so I am going to get a clipless system for my commuter very soon.

I realized that I set my saddle height while wearing converse "Chuck Taylor" All-Stars. Very thin sole on those. I wore my NB running shoes today. A much thicker sole, so better on the pedals, but the seat felt too low.

Also with these shoes I had some heal strike issues, because I had a hard time getting my feet all the way into the clip. I wear a size 11 shoe (45 in european sizes). Clipless should help these issues

My computer died, so I only have google maps to tell me the distance and use a calculator to figure out my speed.

By my calculations I did 10.5 miles and averaged just under 10mph. I did drive partway to my inlaws and rode from there. Once I dial everything in I will try to full 26 miles from my house to work.

I have a pretty decent route with only a couple of short areas where I have to deal with heavy traffic.

Overall I am pretty happy and know I can improve my commute time once I correct some of the issues I had this morning

detrieux 07-08-05 05:38 PM

Just about perfect today. 66 this morning, 80 and sunny but low humidity this evening. Loved every minute of it.

eltejano 07-08-05 09:19 PM

my first ever commute was great, although a bit scary at the end. (SF to Mill Valley and back)

to keep a long story short, the way to work was nice although I suck at hills, so once I got to the flats and downhill, it was great.

But on the way back, the 70+ weather in MV & Sausalito turned into high-powered, cold/wet evil-fog-wind. As I finally got onto the GG Bridge, lemme just say it was like riding in a car wash with a giant fan on one side.

The seasoned pros going the other way looked non-plussed, but for a n00b I was white-knuckling' it just thinking, "once you get across, you're home".

the weather extremes for just a few miles is crazy. hopefully I'll get used to it.

caloso 07-08-05 09:54 PM

eltejano:

Awesome! A couple of years ago I was training for a marathon and did a long run from my then girlfriend's apartment near the Embarcadero to Marin and back. The run across the bridge was just like you describe. I was freaked out just running across it. I can't imagine trying to balance a bike in that crosswind!

mtn_chick 07-09-05 11:12 PM

Great commute! I was fired up even though I had a headwind the whole way. Getting into that zone is kinda scary - in that I've never really been THIS obsessed before. I think you guys help with that!! ;)

And even odder - I was invited over to a friends for beer 'n supper on the way home, but was so into the ride and knowing my stats since it was the first ride with the spedometer, that I just passed right by her road and zoomed home!! That's really unlike me... what's happening!?!?!

tulip 07-10-05 09:39 AM

Google Earth tells me my commute is actually 14 each way, not the 12 that I had estimated. So maybe I'm not so slow after all.

(no bike computer by choice!)

Comute to Work was great last week...
They have a Challenge for CleanAir org.
Do not drive your vehicle from July 22nd (Bike to Work Day 2005) to Aug 30th.
I think the Grand Prize is $500.00
I am in the running, "BUT" I only work 3 days a week! Grrrrr (14 hr days)
I am sure the peeps working 5 days a week get more points, oh well, I will still be there, rain or shine! Haven't started my Bronco or my Harley since the 22nd! Now thats unheard of! But hey... I be getting into great shape!

First ride to work in a couple of weeks for me. Had a nice ride in, but its very muggy outside here in Raleigh today.

cicadashell 07-11-05 06:24 AM

how was that commute, you ask...well it was just fine, thank you. air temperature was 66 °F, dew point 64 °F, which makes it sound almost humid but really it's not that bad. it has been getting into the 90s but losing 30 degrees overnight requires relatively dry air. nice conditions for riding. there are always a few rude boys in their noisy toys out there, but overall i like it better on the bike.

vtjim 07-11-05 07:08 AM

First commute after a week off. (Though I was riding over vacation...)

Sunny. Warm. A bit humid. Looks like another too-hot week.
