mmm mmmm today was FTB day or "Freshly Tweaked Bike" day. Spent about an hour teaking all the deraileurs and brakes last night. Everything was clean and precise. Nothing beats an FTB.

Good ride in this morning - with just enough headwind to make it a solid workout. Starting to see more other commuters on the paths again - must be spring!

roadiejorge 04-15-08 09:06 AM

Great ride this morning here in NYC, there were light winds out of the north so it was smooth riding all the way to work. The weather's going to be great this week so I'm looking forward to the rides.

tarwheel 04-15-08 09:18 AM

Today was my first bike commute since April 4 as I was out of town all of last week, partly for work and partly for a bike tour. Rode Cycle NC's spring event last weekend, cycling 196 miles in 3 days along the North Carolina coast. The ride was great with beautiful weather except for the wind, which made Saturday's century one of my toughest rides ever. Didn't ride yesterday to get some recovery time, and my legs were still pretty tired this morning. The good thing is that daylight has returned to my morning commute after losing it when daylight savings time went into effect a few weeks ago. It was a chilly morning, but I like that because it means no sweat if I dress right.

Yukon Cornelius, big bummer on the hit-and-run! Presume you were out of sorts to get their license number. Very sorry to hear that.

Today, just blustery for me, not sure if same temps (30sF) felt so much colder than last week from the extra bonus wind, or just 'cause it was so warm (pushing 80F) over the weekend.

SDBluefish 04-15-08 11:19 AM

Gorgeous ride - 65 degrees and partly cloudy.
Spent a couple miles gradually catching up with another rider.

First thought - "Hey, that guy has pretty nice legs!" (Always sensitive to scenery, that's me!)

(200 yards later)

Second thought - "Hey, that's not a guy!"

(100 yards after that)

Third thought - "Hey, I know her!"

It was one of the other moms from the kids' school out for a training ride - we rode together and chatted for a while before parting ways. I didn't mention that from a quarter mile away I'd thought she was a man :o

But I was chuffed that I - lunchbox, laptop and all - was catching up with an actual triathlete! Even if she was sandbagging....

caloso 04-15-08 11:30 AM

Got a thorough buttkicking from my training partner this morning. I plan to return the favor on Thursday.

Good commute today, first proper ride with my new Rob Roy build - it's not completed yet, and still lacks brakes (riding it fixed right now). I put it together last night and could barely stay off it, so I figured I'd ride it a bit today and see how she feels. The steerer tube still needs to be cut down, too - all will be done very soon though.

Riding brakeless was a little hairy - at least in the mental sense, in actuality it wasn't a big deal apart from a crosswalk hesitation from a couple of pedestrians, they ended up NOT walking after I hammered on a desperate skid stop - I've learned to mostly read ahead now anyway just from riding a lot (fixed or geared) so the timing/preparation is near second nature most of the time.

The bike rides like a dream, and I love it oh so very much, I'll post a pre-complete pic!

tomg 04-15-08 06:39 PM

good!
wind was with me both ways, sun came out, 60 deg F return trip.
1 truck honk in lane share "issue" (= airzounded and he safely passed)
1 +/-1976 rusted out ford passed from the other direction, no cut off (sholder) but question symble sent (arm out-reached, not "fingered").
a good day overall!!

Metricoclock 04-15-08 06:50 PM

took it easy and road the side walk on the way into work, had a head wind which seems to always happen, but it was a nice leisurely ride, although i was dressed in a nice button up shirt and camel hair sport coat and it made me really ache of a old english 3-spd instead of my beloved miyata.

the ride home, was a little cool, and I was loosing day light, but was uneventful and nice, it was gratifying spinning up to speed and the cars behind me didn't try and pass once i got into the city proper.

jcivic00 04-15-08 08:13 PM

good ride, and great first ride! avg. of 15 mph into the city, and 9mph out. Our city area is a little lower than the outlying areas. Went through our nicer "King William" part of San antonio, everybody is getting ready for Fiesta! Will have pics tomorrow.

jterribili 04-16-08 05:47 AM

good, except that it seems this week my legs are a little sluggish - about 34F - hopefully this is the last morning it is this cold. ready to put the cold weather gear away for good

breadbin 04-16-08 06:04 AM

Fantastic, still in work now so looking forward to cycling outta here;-) Its takes about 50 minutes each way and today was my second day. I tried it a few weeks back and didn't stick with it but fingers crossed things will be better this time round!

tarwheel 04-16-08 06:21 AM

Funny how these mornings in the low 30s feel much colder in April than they did back in January. We've had a couple weeks of milder temperatures, so the 30s this week have been like a slap in the face. Over the weekend, I was riding at the coast with morning lows in the mid-50s and afternoon highs in the upper 70s. Guess I got spoiled.

However, the pollen is bothering me more right now than the cold. I've had a sore throat almost continuously for the past 3 weeks from the pollen. It went away last week while at the coast, but returned as soon as I got back to the Raleigh area. Everything is coated in yellow dust here.

luckysnafu 04-16-08 06:41 AM

Another nice ride to work this morning, third day in a row this week. Took my alternate route today to mix it up. Temps were warming up nicely and it should get close to 70 by this afternoon.

jpdesjar 04-16-08 06:42 AM

another beautiful day!
legs were a little wobbly for some reason, i don't think i ate enough for dinner last night

decent ride though and the afternoon should be great too
it has been the best week for riding

more people on bikes out there too

i found a different route home that extends my ride a bit and avoids certain troublesome intersections
this is good

vtjim 04-16-08 06:50 AM

Another sunny, cloudless morning ride. Temps in the low 30Fs and no wind. I passed a fit-looking woman riding a touring bike with impossibly-big panniers. I said hi but she didn't say hi back. :( Meanie.

I'm feeling pretty slow this week. I guess two months of not-commuting-by-bike will do that.

EKO 04-16-08 06:56 AM

30 mph tailwind on the way home yesterday = the awesome.

30 mph headwinds (gusts to 45) for 8 miles on the way in this morning = the pain.

No big chainring for me today. The last hill was in 3rd or 4th gear. :( I felt like such a noob.

I hear ya on the relative feeling of this current "cold snap"---back in early Feb, I would have considered this a heat wave. :D I was thinking about that this morning as I grumbled to myself about it being too cool for shorts.

Only my second day riding this week--on Monday I was TDY on training (up towards Baltimore). I borrowed a car--ugh! It was the first time I'd driven a car since mid-December, and I've only even been in one a couple of times in that stretch. Phooey! Over the last couple of years cars have become more and more vile and dangerous things to me (and I think I'm better off).

LawMonkey 04-16-08 07:48 AM

Solid commute this morning, though I feel like it was a bit harder getting going. Maybe it was working off that four month old leftover ice-cream cake from my birthday that I had last night. Tomorrow, hopefully it'll be warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt. These last two days I've worn a fleece sweatshirt over my T, then stowed it in my backpack for the ride home.

OTOH, there was the guy who passes me every morning, usually going uphill. (He stands, I grind through the gears.) It's not being passed that bugs me--I know I'm not in the very best shape of my life, as the fitness machine commercials say. It's the fact that he does everything you shouldn't: he rides in the gutter, he weaves in and out of parked cars, and he ignores traffic signals. When I'm out there riding assertively, I'm afraid the four-wheelers are going to think I ought to act more like him...

Allycat24 04-16-08 08:06 AM

What a beautiful day! My 3rd commute this week, and unfortunately my last of the week. I just remembered I have appts both Thur and Fri and can't make it to either by bike. And those are going to be the warmest 2 days of the week!

natbla 04-16-08 08:12 AM

The morning commute was cold! 33 degrees and very sunny
My fingers were almost numb the whole ride, face hurt for the first 10 minutes of descending (I live at the top of a long descent). But it felt really good for all 16.8 miles @ a 20.1 mph for 55 minutes total time.

I did have a pushy delivery truck driver not want to let me across the right hand turn lane as we approached a light where I was going straight and he was turning. But I slowed up so it was all good.

return trip will be in the 60's and beautiful so I can't wait.

habernac 04-16-08 08:39 AM

First morning ride I actually got to wear my shades for.

Pig_Chaser 04-16-08 08:51 AM

Slow ride in today just wasn't "feeling" it. I don't think i can even blame the slight headwind. Oh saw another commuter on my route which is rarer than rare.

stevage 04-16-08 08:54 AM

Long. 18ks to work, 25 (as the car drives, probably much more on wiggly bike path) ks to gf's family, 15ks back. Tired but satisfied. :)
