Had to ride in today. It was 50 F this morning with little wind. Rain or snow tomorrow. So today was the day to go. I left a little early so took a little longer route to get to work.

I am looking forward to getting my cat eye DL 1000 from performance.com

bummer. just doesn't seem right that cycling should end up being "bad" for you. Hope you get this straightened out.

my commute was, how can I say it... "plodding". yeah, "plodding"... kind of lopey-dopey, lopey-dopey, lopey-dopey all the way home. hey, but I did it. now I need a nap.

The mornings commute was good. It was a bit cool and I made it to the office in about 10 minutes.

I am going to bang in sick tomorrow so my commuting for the week is over. I was 3 for 3 this week, and am now 12 for 12 for the year.

Ride home felt faster than usual. But cuz I forgot to look at my computer this morning, I can't verify it. Oh well, at least I felt fast.

what a difference! re-entred my 1987 performance vitesse i got from cyber-cyclery 10 years ago, threw new tires (700x23, punture resist BN, 100psi, road). it hummed both ways today (compaired to mb tank), apples to oranges! had a cop pass me, swing into parking-lot, watch me pass, then pass me again (closer) tonite on the way home (must have been all the lights = 5 total including headlight). i am a roadie by choice!

This morning was the first time that I laid my road bike down on it's side--hit a patch of ice and down I went--left side. The pedal is scratched to he|| and the left STI shifter was rotated inward, but other than that, ... No road rash for me. It's 30F and I'm covered with plenty of polypro-nylon-spandex-neoprene techware.

I had my nearly get hit and die moment of the week this morning. I got a little bit of a late start so I was pushing myself at a pretty good clip down my favorite four-lane road. As I approach my left hand turn, I take the lane, signal, look back, and move into the left hand lane. Then as the turning lane is about to begin, I take the lane, signal, look back, and just as I'm crossing the line into the turning lane a red civic behind me guns its engine and pulls into the turning lane nearly running me over. After I recovered from the shock I pulled in behind her and just shook my head, although I'm not sure she could see me through the large "Nopi Chic" stencil on her rear window. The best part is that after the turn, the civic went all of 100 feet down the road before turning into a building.

You should have pulled up next to the building and yelled something nice to her...
Yesterday a lady in a brand new volvo almost steamrolled over me ... lucky for me, she got stuck at the next red light, so I slowly pulled up next to her and I told her to SLOW DOWN LADY .. as I rode by!!

So, today it rained in the early AM, I went out just after and I managed to get my shorts all wet as usual... no mud guards yet ! LOL

It still took me exactly 30 minutes to make it to work which is ok considering that I spent 2 hours at the velodrome yesterday after work so I was kind of worn out...

Average Speed: 60/30*7.5 = 15 mph.

Nice ride in until a car turned out in front of me and stopped because of traffic blocking the right shoulder of the road that I ride on. She must not have seen me at all or cared because she just blocked the shoulder and I was forced to go around her on the left and cut back to the right side in front of her almost hitting a mustang that slammed on it's brakes. I missed hitting the back of the stang by inches. The sun was almost up and I had my front LED blinkie going so I don't know how the woman missed me. Other than that I had a nice slow ride in this morning. Passed some people running and walking on the golf course I cut through. High 60's for the way home, can't wait for that...TGIF!!!

thdave 01-20-06 08:40 AM

I thoroughly enjoyed my ride in today. I worked the pedals nicely and felt great. Breezey, but not so much as earlier in the week. 50F in Cleveland! Crazy. I'm waiting for the Russian cold front to get here! Can it? Probably not.

Too much sweat today. I thought I had my clothing all set this winter. But, 50 to 55 is weird. One tee shirt isn't enough, but one under a thin sweatshirt is too much. I don't get it!!!

Great ride in this morning, just above freezing with a tailwind. Its Winter Bike to Work Day here, so I stopped by Daley Plaza for cheesecake and picked up some more bike maps of the Chicago area. I hope the forcasted rain/snow holds off until I get home. Walter.

Broke in the studded Nikoians last night on the way home... It started snowing 5 hours before I left the cube farm. The roads were super glossy with a nice layer of snow on top. Cars could barely move. The 6 lane Blvd was gridlocked for 2 miles. I rode by that whole stinkin mess just smiling and waving. Didn't even try to slip a little bit, and I still had the tires pumped up to 60 or 70 psi. Amazing what studs will do.

This morning I headed out into 4-6 inches of frresh snow. Some roads were plowed, some were not. I did discover that riding untracked snow is very similar to skiing in some fresh powder. Just like floating along the road. Really cool.

Cow-Orkers were amazed that I rode in. I replied, "It was a blast...How much fun did you have on the way in ?" :) Somehow I seemed less crazy after that.

balto charlie 01-20-06 09:05 AM

great ride, around 32F give or take. sun was shinning Have a good weekend all

pinkrobe 01-20-06 09:47 AM

I left the house too early to catch the sunrise. I figure it will be another month before I can see it reliably. I couldn't sleep last night. All I could think about was building my own frame from scratch. mcatano and velonomad have totally inspired me with their DIY bikes. Sigh...

GTcommuter 01-20-06 10:54 AM

Great ride this morning. Comfortable temperatures, light traffic, and fresh legs from a week off the bike. It's very refreshing to get back in the saddle after being out of it for too long.

cerewa 01-20-06 11:16 AM

I had a very good commute this morning. My knees have been bugging me and it's made me very frustrated. Yesterday I was feeling like it was never going to get better. But I've been working on keeping my cadence up and not mashing... and not getting lazy and slow, because I need some exercise in my life. Today I got in to things and had time to pay attention to my pedaling style. I made sure I wasn't putting much strain on my knees and putting steady pressure on the pedals through most of the stroke, and lo and behold I was soon going quite fast, pushing through the wind, knees feeling good...

jschen 01-20-06 11:26 AM

Another beautiful morning ride. Very nice drivers on the road today.

Happy Friday, everyone! :)

I know what you mean. I'm wishing I had a garage and found myself looking up the welding classes Times Up offers for free...

1 week listner, first time caller...

Yay! I did my first commute today. Bought a Felt F80 (affordable and doesn't have sora components :) ) a couple days ago and I'm loving it. This forum has been an inspiration and very helpful!

Was a bit chilly but I brought my shell in anticipation. 15 miles of trying to figure out which roads I could take made the commute a little longer than I anticipated but I got to work in one piece.

Wooohooo! Feels great getting a little 15 mile ride in before the day has started.

I have a question regarding a rear rack... I'll be starting school next week and my books are about 25 to 30 pounds with laptop. Problem is, my bike doesn't have eyelets. Is there a 30+ pound rear rack equipped for panniers that I can install without needing eyelets?

Heh. :p Yep. Riding in the snow is more fun than driving in it.

Unfortunately there's no more snow around here. Northern Vermont and there's no snow. Hmm. Not down by Lake Champlain anyway. It's 48F here. Morning commute was in the high 30s. There are a couple of sections of ice on the trail and a guy walking his dogs told me to be careful because it's treacherous. I said, "Yep! I've got studs."

LilSprocket 01-20-06 03:23 PM

Woo-Hoo! Hi! I've been enjoying your forum so signed up. New to commuting, a lil' 6 miler to the office is just a shame to take the car. Got about a 1.5 mile of no bike lane on a skinny, crazy, bizzy, scary  two laner, then another 4 miles on a fire road away from cars (YAY!).

60's temps, a little 12mph NE wind for a little push on my Southward route... was AWESOME! :D
Looking forward to the ride home, especially as the days grow longer :)

tomg 01-20-06 07:07 PM

5/5 commute week. today's temp on return was 60degs (weird, but nice)! couple of cager right hooks, countered by right passes at stop lites. a typical friday, but with the weather possibly making the cager's cage their perceived entrapment, my freedom is real enjoyment!

spidercyclist 01-20-06 11:27 PM

Six days in a row this week of commuting. I hope next week I can do as well. I hope the temps hold on for a little while longer. Have a good night.

jschen 01-21-06 12:39 AM

Ride home would have been uneventful. Except I noticed my headlight was unusually dim. Umm, okay, that's odd. I'll have to check it out later. Then it dies. Hmm, that's not good. I figure my battery must have run out of juice. But I charge it every night for the prescribed amount of time, and my commute is under 30 minutes! Sure enough, somehow, I must have tripped a circuit breaker a while back, and I slowly managed to drain my battery. Oh well, recharging it tonight, and we'll see how it is in the morning.
