MY RIDE HOME

Gropple Gropple from the skies,
Falls from the clouds and into my eyes,
I'm a big boy I won't cry,
But I sure am glad cows don't fly!

Thank You

Light rain on the ride in, had a light wool sweater over polypro, just enjoyed having a light rain instead of drenching rain and flooding. The ride home was nice and calm, but so slow. I can tell I haven't ridden in almost a week. In between I had to work, but the ride makes it worthwhile.:)

The ride today was cold ,wet, buddy .But still a good ride. Have a good nite .

First posting for me on this thread.

I have been commuting very regulary since the middle of 2005 and decided to see how long I could last into winter. So far it has been ok, in fact I've enjoyed it greatly.

My ride is around 24 miles round trip. Temps in the north of the UK are now mid to low 30s a little warmer in the evening. But thankfully no significant rain of late and generally calm - which of course helps.

This morning was 'fresh' but enjoyable, and I always look forward to my ride home. Good health and good luck to everyone for 2006.

awesome ride today, a little lower temps than usual but shorts & T-shirt compatible for me !

=)

Upper 30's with a pretty stiff head wind, again, and the air is damp. It was a quiet and serene ride in. Snow is on the way.

It was so warm that... a friendly guy that I usually see on my rides did not have a sweater on his terrier. He takes this dog on a walk daily.

Rode every workday in 2006 so far. Wonder how long I can keep the steak going :D Santa was very nice and got me the EMS Gunk soft shell although this warm snap has not warrented its use! Today was 37F and seemed time to try it out. WOW! Talk about wind-proof! Toasty all the way with the exception of the toes.

Nothing unusual except days are getting longer. http://www.sunrisesunset.com is a nifty tool if you customize to your city. Sunrise still 7:08 in Memphis but the sunset is getting later.

Spent xmas in DC (Georgetown) and talk about bike mecca! Must be 3 bike shops within a qtr mile radius! Spent the whole time fixing my BIL's neglected bike and a big thanks to Floyd and Tom at Revolution! Wish I had those friendly bike shops and something like the Crecent trail here!!

Back to Memphis and the land of scarce two wheeled commuting!

Fine ride in this morning. Very comfortable even though I got off to a late start. I was sad to see a very nicely restored vintage Mustang get sideswiped and run up on the curb by an SUV. The Mustang driver was ok, but the SUV didn't even stop. I hate to see a beatiful and obviously well cared for machine get abused by someone who wasn't even paying attention to the road. Could have just as easily been me getting hit on my bike.

Where is winter? Not that I'm complaining, bikewise. I saw a bald eagle today. And a fat 'possum. And a whole lot of bike commuters, or maybe they all just got hi-viz jackets for the holidays and so I notice them more.

I set a new personal record today: Lowest temperature for a tube change: 20 F. It was on a stretch of road with only private residences, so I couldn't go inside anywhere; I just found a cleared driveway to set up in. (We got about an inch of snow last night.) Fortunately I was dressed well enough so that the only annoyance was that I had to keep taking breaks to warm my hands up, after needing them bare to work. When I got to work, my hands and feet were both slightly uncomfortable, due to being out longer than usual, but nothing dangerous. Delayed me about 25 minutes, including the 3 minutes spent conversing with the nice older gentleman who came out of the house to make sure I was okay, just as I got the wheel back on.

That was me exactly in 2002, and before I realized it, spring had arrived and I made it through! I've been year-round ever since. If I can do it, you can too - Good luck!!

That's cold. I had to do that earlier this winter tho' it was more like 30F. I couldn't move my fingers when I finished.
My commute was excellent this AM, actually warmish!! Like 50F
Velo: You better not piss off the commuting gods asking silly Q's like that!! Winter is waiting. We only juust begun.

DataJunkie 01-05-06 09:19 AM

Good commute this morning. Yesterday on the way home I was snowed on. A nice little snow shower and it was 40F out. What the?

This morning 2 joggers puzzled me. The area was pitch black (no street lights). Neither jogger had any reflective gear on. Both were female. The first jogger was running in the middle of the street and the second one was running in the bicycle lane. I was pondering asking the second jogger where her bike was but did not bother. Also, each street had well maintained sidewalks.

Felt good to be back on the bike commuting again. Legs didn't feel much different after two weeks off and it showed. My time was right where it usually is although I could've gone faster even w/ the wet streets. Took it easy since I just put on a new wheel last night and was feeling a little tentative about pushing too hard. Plus I didn't want to sweat too much since it was warm today (37F).

squeakywheel 01-05-06 09:28 AM

26F (-3C) according to the bank sign on my new route. Should have worn a warmer coat. Snow and ice are completely gone from the road. Really liking the new bike. Can't wait to get my singlespeed conversion done so I can stop riding my new one in all this sand and goop.

pinkrobe 01-05-06 10:14 AM

About -3C leaving the house today. Velogirl, be careful what you wish for! :) I'm waiting for winter to come give me the smack-down any day now. Anyway, I had an easy ride in this morning, passed a couple of fellow bikers on the road. It's getting to be lighter and lighter out in the mornings, probably because I'm leaving for work later and later. It's still too early for a decent sunrise, but another few weeks will fix that.

eastbaybob 01-05-06 10:32 AM

The Santa Ana's started kicking up yesterday afternoon, and this morning they were really blowing. Temp was 66 for the commute with 25-35 mph headwinds. Despite this adversity I made it to the office in about 10 minutes.

aadhils 01-05-06 11:28 AM

Today was a great commute. I was'nt that tired, and it was'nt hell like yesterday. I think I felt that pleasant painfull sensation that Lance Armstrong always describes during the last stages of his training for the TDF...

jschen 01-05-06 12:40 PM

Comfortable, relatively warm ride home last night.

Another practice at continuous standing and climbing today... I still have trouble going half a mile up a 5% grade standing, but I did make it up, and I'll keep at it. It was uncomfortably warm. :(

noisebeam 01-05-06 12:47 PM

There was a tailwind this morning that wasn't really noticable, except for letting me go fast and get a great time, all while feeling like I was not pushing that hard.

52F this AM, compared to 36F yesterday AM. High today is forcast to approach very close to 80F.

Whoo hoo! First commute for 2006!

Beauuuuuuutiful sunrise :D Felt like spring today in Portland.

mtessmer 01-05-06 02:35 PM

Ahhhhh, nice commute today, still gloomy, no sun but the roads are clear of snow and the riding is good. I think we got up to 29F so far today, now it looks like it's dropping. I took a longer route on my lunch break.

Zin 01-05-06 04:23 PM

40F & windy. Pretty much the same its been since the week before Christmas.

cruzMOKS 01-05-06 05:33 PM

Today was a little cooler, but I usually dress too warm.

Let's see if I can put a photo of the Kansas City, MO skyline from the Chouteau bridge.

WaaHoo I got the photo on. This photo was at 7:09 AM 5-Jan-06 on the Chouteau bridge looking west.
