Pretty windy this morning. Most of the time it was from the side and the rest a tailwind. Happy to have been on the bike.

Happy new year all.

(1) 54°@ 6am at the end of December is absurd.
(2) Less than an inch of rain since September is also absurd.

They make for great commuting conditions, but the wildfires are getting to be a worry.

Beautiful ride in. Lovely sunrise and short sleeves. The word is that the wind will shift to be at my back for the ride home, as well. 9 roundtrips without a puncture, too. Life is good.

eastbaybob 12-30-05 10:51 AM

A bitterly harsh 46 degrees for this mornings ride. Fortunately it was dry and sunny so I made it to the office in about 10 minutes.

A Special Report; My Ride Home

Yes, it was cold, but sunny and bright. I rode home from work a bit early as we got cut loose early today. The ride home took about 10 minutes.

buzzman 12-31-05 12:20 AM

36F coming home tonight at 11pm.

But the ground temp must have been a little chillier as I got a little further out from Boston because the dreaded Black Ice of Brighton was making it's presence known. Fortunately, I have the new Nokian carbide studded ice breakers on and was able to dance over the ice like Bobby Orr.

Saw one commuter cyclist on the way in and soloed the entire 12 mile ride home seeing nary a pedestrian nor a cyclist on the bike path.

0 commutes this week, holiday traffic, getting the car ready for winter, drive train problems (shimano alivio set) etc...,excusses! thanks somewhat to this site, i have been even more commited to the inclusion of bicycle commuting, and wish fellow workers and neighbors could share in this exitement! my total milage for 2005 was at 2600.0, last years total was 1700.0 miles (even including a 900.0 mile tour) . wish all fellow commutors a Safe and Happy New Year!

Today was a nogo. Drove in due to flooding and being on standby for Emergency Services. Called in for County Search and Rescue to assist in flood rescue. I- 80, 505, Hwy 12 under water in parts of Solano County. In-laws had tree knock powerlines onto their house. They have been told to prepare to evacuate. I wish we could send some of our rain to Texas and Oklahoma. Only 1 storm related fatality as of 6 PM in Solano County. Next storm to hit in a few hours, hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.

not bad, considering a whole week off. well, a week off with occasional shorter trips just to remind myself how to do it. good times both ways too, and no particular evidence of jelly-legs. tomorrow may be the killer.

i have 11 work days left at this job. right ON! almost done, and i still haven't made up my mind how i feel about this ride. sometime last week i took my bike downtown at evening rush hour just to scope it out and see what it might be like if i get my next job down there. seems like it's just better in every conceivable way, and yet. . . it was so different, i just know that when i'm not doing this ride anymore i'll start getting nostalgic for parts of it. i hate change AND stagnation, basically. and i'm also starting to think soberly that i might not get any job at all for a while.

cool and clear and grey both ways. nice. it's disturbing how little rain we've had this winter. fall was demented, but i think it hardly rained at all in december. no idea of the temperatures because the led i rely on is still saying 130C all the time. must have been easily in the zone between 5 and 10 degrees.

wore my balaclava coming home. this is the pure-wool one i knitted a while ago in the cold crunch and then thought 'oh get real, you're never going to need somethign like that out here.' well, no, but it sure was nice. happiness is a warm face.

My commute in the last week consisted on 100 mile roundtrips on the charming Los Angeles freeways visiting my father in law at the hospital. It is not as bad as they say, but it is a slow week because the holidays. It was quite interesting seeing cars loosing control because it rains ... lots of fun.

awesome ride today !

had a little less mph because of my new gearing (40x15) so It took me 2 more minutes than usual to get here =)

Other than that, It was great !

Wulfheir 01-03-06 08:13 AM

-7C/19F calm.

First day back after a week off. Good commute, uneventful. Did a 20km ride yesterday to get the body used to pedalling again.

TxBiker 01-03-06 08:46 AM

Today was my first time back on the bike in two weeks. Family vacations and business trips kept me from being able to enjoy my ride. It was great to get back on the tank. I sure missed the sites and sounds of my morning commute. I left a little early so I could enjoy being back on the bike. And, with 42 degrees, a slight fog over the bayou...it was remarkable!!!

Yep, I could tell that I had been off the bike for 10 days... Was just sort of a slow lumbering ride in to work today. A balmy 42 when I left the house. Had to peel off the shell to keep from melting down.
Bike seemed reeeally heavy this morning. Had the laptop, food, thermos of coffee, and misc junk. That's the disadvantage to using the panniers I guess... I tend to haul tons of stuff.
Oh well, I'm in it for the exercise anyways :)

Happy New year all: I want to post here often. I use to post in the past but work became a nuisance. Anyway the commute was a drizzly and rainy affair, temps low 40F/5C. I almost got hit twice! I hate those "round-a-bouts" Drivers never see me in them. I was lit up like a christmas tree. I guess the divers are still in a New Years fog.

PaulH 01-03-06 09:15 AM

School vacation is over, so I no longer have to drop off my daughter at vacation camp. This means the Trail-A-Bike is no longer connected, and the bike rolls much more easily. I dropped one of the cars off at the shop in and rode in from Falls Church to Arlington on the trail. It was a warm 42 F / 6 C with light drizzle. Happy New Year!

33 F. Not much snow and ice. Felt like I was beach cruising with all the sand on the road. Tried a new route today that I discovered while riding yesterday.

Right knee was a little sore this morning. I rode for 3.5 hours yesterday. Some of that was on snow packed bike trails. That was pretty hard going.

Edit: Oh yeah, I almost killed the neighbor's dog this morning. They live at the bottom of a big hill. The dogs always run along the ditch and bark at me when I go by. They have invisible fence collars. Today, one was so excited that it barged through the invisible fence and ran out in the road right in front of me. I didn't brake. I just swerved around it. It chased me a ways down the road, but I was putting distance between us the whole time. I had a fair amount of speed built up from the hill.

First commute in "The Year of the Dog"... and it was a wet one. I rode my ghetto singlespeed (a late 60s Triumph), and used a new lock I got for XMas... hooray.

pinkrobe 01-03-06 09:45 AM

Oy! First day on the bike since last Thursday. My sartorius [a leg muscle] on both sides is still sore from snowboarding on the weekend. That's what I get from hiting 2' of powder. Other than that, the temps were a few degrees below zero when leaving the house, and I'm not hung over. Yay! :)

James55Thompson 01-03-06 10:05 AM

It was foggy, cold and damp on the first ride in for 2006. Seems like we are all off to a goog start to the new year. Hopefully it bodes well for the remainder of the year.

eastbaybob 01-03-06 12:00 PM

First commute of the year, it was pretty cold, 45F or so, but clear and not raining. I have a computer on the bike now. It was a 2.1 mile ride completed in a bit over 8 minutes.

nicomachus 01-03-06 12:30 PM

another first commute of the year over here. it was wet though not cold -- then again, i've been in quebec for the last few days, so no kinda southern weather is going to feel cold for a while.

good to be back on the bike again. it was my first ride since dec 20th, and my legs were starting to feel soft.

mtessmer 01-03-06 02:38 PM

Well, I'm back to work and commuting again. I've been off and haven't ridden since Dec 22 (other then my New Years day ride). It felt good, it was pretty balmy this morning. It was about 33F, now we are somewhere between 33-35F. The roads over all are in pretty good shape, I can cruise right along. The year is starting well.

tomg 01-03-06 07:06 PM

what a bear! i rode mb w/26 x 2.125" 45psi deep knobby trail tires, attempting to catch lost time (not be late) = in a hurry. i side tracked trying to load rear panniers and handlebar bag w/ gear from usual commuter-tourer (that has 25 x 700C 100psi tires, but drive-train still needs work). the ride was with a lite wind and rain each way. what a way to start the year, legs still feeling it!

Brad M 01-03-06 08:31 PM

I need to get out my spring jacket. This "heat wave" is ridiculous.

eastbaybob 01-03-06 09:02 PM

A Special Report: My Ride Home

I left work late, the sun was getting ready to set. Temps were cold, in the low 60's. But I rode, and rode like the the wind, and made it home in around 8 minutes.
