Great ride to work and home. It was warm today, it had to be atleast 40 out. Isn't it something to go from 5 above to 40 in about a week? I hope the rest of the week is this good. Have a good night.
|
Heh... we northern California riders are *******. You think 40 is warm. We think it's about as cold as it gets around here. Lately the weather has been in the mid-60s with occasional light rain, and almost NOBODY is on bicycles.
|
Not too many people out on the west side of manhattan this morning. Didn't see my first biker until 80th st and the second below 60th (coming down from NJ). Very quiet out. Most of my body was warm enough, but my feet got real cold toward the end of the ride. In the shower this morning I was starting to wonder if I hadn't done some damage since they were still numb. Feeling ok now.
Wish I could have biked the strike last week. Felt a little obligated to help complete a foursome to drive in. Feels great to be able to commute in during Christmas week. Hopefully Friday will work out as well, tomorrow looks like rain. |
Nice ride in this morning. It was 30F when I left the house, and I dressed just right (well, my feet got a little cold toward the end).

Commuted by train today since my bike is still in police custody after my accident last week. I gotta pick it up today and of course, I forgot my receipt so I have to go home first. Apparently, the wheel's out of true too so I have to get that fixed before I hop back on. Commuting by train was interesting since I had forgotten temporarily where I worked and what station to get off. But deep down I knew since I walked straight to where I was supposed to get on/off to make the exit out of Grand Central quicker. I also got a chance to hit the coffee shop I hadn't gone to since I started bike commuting. They remembered me and I ordered my usual breakfast. The swollen lump on my face is almost all gone, the scrapes turned into scabs which then flaked off by Monday morning (good thing cuz it was really tempting me to pick at them) and now all I have left is a black eye which I didn't have until a few days after the accident. I'll just tell people I got it at my in-laws during Christmas.

Goodly amount of rain and a little wind. That's apparently enough to separate the men from the boys in San Francisco (although usually a bucket of cold water and a crowbar are needed).
I was the ONLY bicyclist on the CalTrain bike car this morning all the way from SF to Redwood City. These bike cars hold 32 bikes and are filled to overflowing in good weather. |
Hard to get better than today's ride. Temp in the upper 40's, light breeze, freshly trued and tensioned wheels and Christmas-new Novara pants from REI to try out. Added about a half mile to my going-in route and chatted with a guy who promises to become a commuter as soon as he gets a light and new shoes for his bike. He thought my L&M Halogen was unbelievably blinding. I told him the HID's were vastly brighter, but I don't think he believed me.
Going home yesterday, I almost collided with another biker as we left the train station... Near T-Bone, as I turned left, not knowing he was shadowing me. No felony, no foul, though. Leaving early today, so the ride home will be in 100% daylight. That'll be a nice change. |
Had a nice slow relaxing ride into work today. The weather was dry, clear and 38 degrees. This afternoon's ride will be in the 60s.
|
This was the first time in about 5 days that I haven't been hungover. I also had to go back to work today. Coincidence? ;)
Very sparse traffic today, as the rest of the known universe has the week off. At least it isn't cold, although snow is forecast for tonight. |
51 degrees this morning. The ride was nice as school is not going on so there are not a bunch of cars dropping of kids. Took about ten minutes to get to work.
|
A bit rainy this morning in Chicago, but not very cold. 36°F is always better than 2°F!
|
31F (-.5C) tonight on the ride home and I was so warm it was like a summer day. Now have a pair of studded Nokian's on the bike and it's like riding up a very slight hill all the time. I'm trying to keep the same cadence as with my more modest winter tires that I had on the bike before and end up dropping down a gear to do so. It's been so warm there was no ice on the roads and I had to search for remnants of ice and snow banks to roll over with my fancy new tires to justify the extra effort and expense of having them. I must admit it was awfully nice to have most of the snow and ice gone.

Gorgeous weather here in OKC (high in the 60's F). Today's ride went well until a few blocks from home when I got chased by 3 stray dogs. I didn't see them in the dark until I was right up on them (I think I startled them as much they startled me). I went ahead and sprinted for a bit, but they didn't chase for long.

Perfect weather today.
The ride was quite different because I changed my gearing from 52x15 to 40x14. My legs feel a little more tired but not as pumped as before. I suppose I'll have to get used to it if I want to keep my knees in tact !!!!!! =) |
Nice commute in this morning. Traffic was light to moderate, enjoyable; but school starts up again Monday. We had rain last night so the temps were in the 40s this morning with wet streets. The lack of noise and traffic made for a peaceful commune with nature on the way in.
|
First commute in 5 days and it was great! Damp roads, 46°... no rain and virtually no traffic, or parked cars clogging Comm.ave. Only saw 5 other bikers, two were travling in the same direction as myself and one them was way ahead. I'd ride on damp roads nearly everyday if it was always this nice, gotta love the Holiday Season for school vacation alone.
|
Woke up really late, jumped on the bike after the sun was up and still made it to work on time. I didn't get to stop for breakfast, so now I've got the hungries. Very little traffic today, likely a combination of my lateness and the holidays.
48 hours from now, I'll be knee-deep in untracked powder. Oh yass! :D |
It was cold again this morning, low 50's. But it was dry so I rode my bike and made it to the office in about 10 minutes.

Beaut of a morning, today. Cloudless, windless and ~40°. Finally chased down and neutralized an annoying fender rattle, last night, so today's ride was less annoying to the ear. Had a really nice ride along a cattail pond with many breakfasting ducks and had a great blue heron soar alongside me in the mist for a ways. Nice. Shoulda put that in a haiku. :)
On a sadder note, I discovered yesterday that my old-style seatpost bolt had rubbed a small hole in my new Novara pants on the very first ride I wore them. They're not ruined, but it's a bit of a bummer. I ordered a new post and wrapped the jagged part with black tape till it gets here. |
A bit wet and a headwind going in to work this morning. It was only my third day of commuting this month...it's been very cold and snowy here in Chicago. Five more miles and I'll make 4K total miles for the year. Ordered a pair of Sugoi Subzero tights and Sugoi Resistor shoe covers today to upgrade the winter riding gear. What I'm replacing are pretty tattered. Riding home tonight it was 35°. Last Friday it was in the mid 40's - I like that temperature for riding.

A Special Report: My commute home.
Mostly I just post my commute to work, today I will also post my commute home. It was cold, but warmer than the morning, maybe low 60's. It took about 10 minutes to get home. |
theory of relativity.
temperature 45F (7.2C)- September - freezing. Tonight- I was overheated. Rain- compared to the snow and ice it felt like a warm shower. The bike path- Mid-May jam packed chaos. Tonight- 10 miles of me and noone else (except two rabbits and a flock of geese). A gorgeous night for a ride. Boston was all fogged in from the Cambridge side of the bike path. My headlamp cut a beam like a 50 foot light saber in the fog. My new Nokian's track me safely over one last unexpected wet stretch of ice. I should reread this post some night in June to see that I can be blissed out on a cold rainy night in December. |
best and scariest 7.5 miles I've ridden in a while !
about half way through, my chain flew off of the rear cog. I thought i was gonna start riding a wheelie for a second then I realized i was spinning like a madman ! LOL Anyway, lucky for me I carry a 15mm box end wrench with me... thats all It took to loosen the rear hub and get the chain back on and tighter than before. Strange thing is that I had this thing on as tight as possible ! Anyway, I suppose I should upgrade my multi-gear cog to a fixed gear specific cog soon... the cog has these kind of angles on each blade that I think was part of the reason it came off + riding hard through bumpy sidewalks to avoid insane traffic on us-1. So there it is. Made it alive once again ! |
