Coldest commute yet at -28C when i left my house. Have i earned my winter commuting badge yet? I was actually quite toasty with the exception of my toes.

My bike computer did not like the cold. I pressed a button to see the time and nothing happened. So i pressed it again thinking my gloved hand failed properly depress it... nothing, after a couple more attempts i give up. I looked down on it a few minutes later to see that it had changed 3 or 4 functions (probably the exact number of times i pressed the button). I'd like to think it was reporting the speed too slowly but i know it wasn't.

Great ride in this morning. I've ridden in when it was 17 degrees so now that it's 36 in the morning it feels like a spring day!

mjw16 02-26-09 09:39 AM

Nice. 40F -ish and calm otherwise, uneventful. Oh yeah, hit 26 mph on a stop light sprint from 15th and Independance to Constitution. I did it to accomodate the traffic that had been behind me, keeps them from honking and zipping around me.

Standalone 02-26-09 09:57 AM

Nice ride to the station this morning, only I annoyed the conductor by not having my ticket ready. Same guy as yesterday. I look like a scrub in my raggedy wool commuting gear, so I'd better make nice with him before I try to convince him to let me on with a 26" folder I found for cheap! :)

And thank you buzzman and heather!

HardyWeinberg 02-26-09 10:11 AM

28F and icy. 2 hr school delay and not my turn w/ the kids so I just went to work myself. No real slips (kind of morning that makes me wonder about marathon winters; if I didn't dislike my schwalbe snow-studs so, for my conditions, I'd still have them on but...)

jpdesjar 02-26-09 10:58 AM

pleasant riding this morning
i would like to put some skinny tires back on but it may be too early for that
:thumb:

40*F, light wind but the rain had stopped from last night.
First ride with my new Garmin Edge...I found out I was pretty accurate on my miles and speed calculation all this time...kind of good news but I had hoped I was going faster then that ;)

JoeSoMD 02-26-09 11:36 AM

First ride of the new season for me!!! Yippie!!! My heart rate was 20bpm above normal. I am really out of shape. Yikes! But unbelievably happy to be riding into work again.

tdreyer1 02-26-09 01:02 PM

It was a windy bugger this morning. maybe 20-25mph out of the west. Winds have now calmed down a bit, and it's supposed to rain this afternoon.:D Gonna be fun on a bun!

noglider 02-26-09 03:24 PM

30F degrees and not too windy. I had some sleet for two or three minutes, but it didn't matter. I picked up the pace a bit today and shaved two or three minutes off. I think I'm down to about 53 minutes to work, which is uphill. It's a 10 mile trip. Overall, it was pleasant. I'm feeling strong going uphill.

buzzman 02-26-09 06:05 PM

an okay ride in this morning but witnessed a strange incident. I'm riding along down Comm Ave. and it's a section where I have to take the whole right lane due to parked cars and double parked cars and trucks that I'll soon have to move into the left lane to pass.

I'm booking along about 18 mph and I hear coming up behind me a high powered car that's going about 50 I move over and let him squeeze by me and he barely slows but then traffic slows him to not much faster than me. Eventually I catch up to him while he's in the left lane and I'm in the right lane and it's a guy in his 50's in a black BMW on his cell phone. I ignore him and keep riding. He weaves through traffic, around some construction and guns it again. There's another cyclist a 1/2 block ahead of me and he pins him to a truck!- just wedges him but I don't even know how much actual contact there is because they've both just come to a halt and then the BMW peels out and goes. The cyclist pulls over (to gather himself?) I say, "hey, you okay?" and the cyclist (messenger bag, road bike/maybe fixie) is like, "yeah, fine." no big deal. I said, " the guy just almost took me out, too" I was tempted to chase the jerk down and we both actually did catch him at the next light but since the other cyclist didn't seem too interested in making a big deal of it neither was I and off we went. But whew!

The ride home, on the bike path , was relatively uneventful. The ice is melting.:)

jyossarian 02-26-09 09:57 PM

buzzman, I too was almost taken out by a cellphone talking BMW driver today. I was walking on the sidewalk when the guy pulled into the driveway I was about to cross and almost took me and another guy out. The cop this happened in front of seemed more interested in making sure he was cleared to park in the garage than telling him to put the cellphone down and drive safely.

rumrunn6 02-27-09 05:27 AM

not riding in today
woke up late
sore all over
company moving today will need to be very physical, maybe
appointments after work in distant cities
excuses excuses
hey, I got the bike out and even built a custom rear reflector mount

MIKEnDC 02-27-09 05:33 AM

Man oh man, what a nice ride in this morning! 45F/+7C with light to moderate southerlies--just flat out balmy!

Of course, if it were August I'd be wimpering... :D

fletchh 02-27-09 06:44 AM

good ride

Today was very nice. It was about 30 F (-1 C) and it felt warm. I overdressed a bit, but not too bad. It is supposed to turn crappy with a cold front this afternoon, and hopefully I get out while the weather is still warm. Anohter month or so, and the warm days will return.

mickey85 02-27-09 06:49 AM

Windy as hell. I found myself actually leaning into the wind just to keep upright. Thought I wanted to die.

kegoguinness 02-27-09 06:52 AM

Great ride. I must confess I ran a red light and got a "That's a goddamned red light!" from a motorist. I was at an intersection where I am not normally, and when cross-traffic got their red light, I took off, thinking we got a green, but the folks opposite got a protected green instead. By the time they were moving I was mostly through the intersection. Lesson learned there. Love the weather right now; upper 40's (f). No jacket required!

mjw16 02-27-09 06:53 AM

50F, balmy, nice tailwind-what more could you ask for? I was dressed more appropriatly than yesterday with: shorts, 2 shirts, full gloves, skull cap-I can shed alot of that stuff for this afternoon's ride home when temps should be around 60F. I zipped along at about 21 mph for most of the ride and made up for a late start. Had to stop yesterday to check my rr. brakes. I think one of the pads picked something up and it was grinding againts the rim. I checked, saw nothing, and adjusted them while I was at it-the commute seems to be a good proving grounds where I can make most of my adjustments/tweaks. After finding nothing I figured it either fell out or, it was just that the pads had glazed over (I like to sand them with course sandpaper when this happens). They were quiet today so...... Should be a sweet ride home. Can't wait to put road tires back on the bike, probably mid-March when we don't have the possibility of snow. I'm going to try a 25 fr. / 28 rr. tire combination this Summer.

tarwheel 02-27-09 07:06 AM

Great ride to work this morning with the temps around 50 F, the warmest morning we've had in a while. I rode despite the forecast calling for possible showers this afternoon because I couldn't pass up riding in such warm temps again, with afternoon high expected in mid-60s. It's also my first "5-bagger" of 2009 as I've ridden to work every day this week. I've still got new bike fever and have thoroughly enjoyed commuting on my new Bob Jackson touring bike. I might get to try out the fenders this afternoon if the rains roll in earlier than expected. This is my first bike with full fenders, although I've used clip-on RaceBlades a lot in the past, and I'm hoping they will be a big improvement in the rain.

JoeSoMD 02-27-09 07:32 AM

Too much headwind for just my second day back! Yikes.

rumrunn6 02-27-09 07:44 AM

I did it! I made it! AGHAGHAGHAGH 1st commute of the season and last one to this office

see you all on the flip side we're shutting down!

timothyday 02-27-09 07:45 AM

It is a beautiful morning in Philly. I hit almost every light as it went to green for most of Broad St. North to city hall. Best of all motorists were getting out of my way and waiting for me to pass, could have sworn I heard a chorus of angels.:thumb:

Doohickie 02-27-09 08:15 AM

Couldn't ride yesterday due to a problem with my son's car that I had to deal with. That put me late and I just drove.

This morning was warm, better than 60 degrees, and breezy but not so bad that it slowed me up. It will be cooler when I go home but the wind should be at my back so it will all balance out. It's very cloudy and I was wondering if I would get wet but there's only a 10% chance of rain. I made it in dry.

ItsJustMe 02-27-09 08:16 AM

49*F and a tailwind this morning, so possibly the nicest ride of the year so far. I put the SPD pedals back on (again) two days ago, I had to switch back to platforms last week so I could wear boots when it was about 4*F in the morning.

Heather H 02-27-09 08:25 AM

Great ride in today! 68 degrees and humid so I actually got to sweat a little. I had a headwind on the way in, but I think the wind is supposed to shift so I'll probably have a headwind on the uphill ride home too. It's going to get cold again tomorrow, ugh. I wish spring would hurry up and stay here!

Pig_Chaser 02-27-09 08:38 AM

Fast ride in this morning :D I topped up the air in my studded tires as road conditions have improved greatly since the dump of snow 2 days ago. -24C and i dressed the same as yesterday and i was way too hot when i got to work.

Standalone 02-27-09 09:56 AM

I returned home yesterday to find the car that I would have been driving was sitting with a flat! :) It's awesome that I don't even have to worry about fixing it until Saturday Morning. :)

I purchased a monthly pass for the train, so now I'm fully committed! Only $60 It cost me $18 just to do three days this week. The monthly is a great deal.

I skipped the fleece vest under the windbreaker today, and was mighty comfortable-- it was like 38F out. Lovely.

I'm really enjoying the walk part of the commute. I'm sure I'll tire of it somewhat, but I almost don't want a folder!

noglider 02-27-09 10:04 AM

I had a good, quick ride home last night. The morning commute was 30F, and the evening commute was 42F. I don't have adequate headlights, but I decided to be bold and go fast and hope not to hit any potholes. I was lucky. There was one pothole that I noticed a tiny fraction of a second before I hit it, and it was scary, but I managed to get out of the saddle in time, so no big deal.

I woke up pretty stiff this morning. Walking the dogs helped, and I stretched a bit once I got to work. (I drove to work today, according to my plan.)

Does anyone have a recommended set of stretching exercises? I never stretch enough after rides. And I don't even stretch one bit before rides, and I should.

mjw16 02-27-09 10:28 AM

I don't stretch before or {immediately} after rides to and from work, I rely on starting slow and gradually warming up by riding at a moderate pace until the legs are loose. I, however, do focus on stretching 3 x's a week in the evenings (something I have to resume on a regular basis). I find that the various ham/glute/quad/calf stretches we did as warmups for soccer/football practice are a good start. I also include some yoga stretches for my back/neck. While I don't think this is ideal, my busy schedule doesn't allow for much more. I think it's moderately effective in keeping my legs healthy and loose enough to get through week after week of commuting.

Y'all weren't kidding. My ride in (east) was calm as can be. But that wind you had is sure here now!

I just stepped outside the lobby here and the wind was whipping around the corner of the building at like 35-40. Right out of the west. I'm going to have a slow ride home... :/
