I am new at this. But this seems interesting.

Been commuting on bicycle for a few years and am interested in what people are up against in their respective corners of the world. I currently ride a 17 mile roundtrip commute in SE Wisconsin. Winter is winding down and Spring has me excited for longer joy rides rather than the "strictly business" commutes the cold, dark months offer.

Today was warmish and calm. Early AM shifts (leave the house about 0400) every other weekend give me a different perspective. I am used to a late morning/early afternoon ride with all the lunch and mid day traffic. This morning I had the full 8.5 miles to myself with mellow winds and 38 degrees (3 C). Still dark that early, but pleasantly so.

I went to seminary in Mequon. Rode all over Thiensville, Brown Deer, German Town, and Northern Milwaukee, especially when my car stopped driving over 35mph without stalling senior year.

We are almost neighbors. I can see Falmouth from my house in Fairhaven.

Your not a former "Stang Banger" are you?

I'm getting more opportunities to ride this week. It was beautiful our every day last week except Friday and that was the only day I could ride. Oh well, let's see what happens this week.

buzzman 03-22-09 08:57 PM

made excellent time into town this morning. I thought I must be getting into some decent shape. Should have realized I was getting some extra assistance from mother nature. Pounded home into a headwind on the way back and was slow as molasses.

MIKEnDC 03-23-09 05:03 AM

36F/2 or 3C with a very persistent northerly (right to left crosswind for most of my way) that gusted up above 20 here and there. Colder on my fingers than I would normally hope for spring, but early days yet.

Cleared out my sinuses very nicely, though! :D

fletchh 03-23-09 06:05 AM

It was cold again, 26 F (-3 C). Not deadly cold, but with spring around the corner, untolerable. It will not warm up again until Friday. The ride was in cold weather gear, of which I am sick. Other than the temp, it was an easy ride.

Doohickie 03-23-09 06:42 AM

The ride was just peachy- 62 degrees and a strong tailwind. The ride home is gonna be tough with 25 mph headwind, though.

dwilbur3 03-23-09 07:11 AM

Finally back on my bike today after two weeks. My knee is still not 100% but it didn't complain much. It was cold by NoCal standards this morning (near freezing).

vtjim 03-23-09 07:20 AM

Light tailwind. Temps down in the mid-teens F. Some sunshine. An enjoyable ride. I'll have a headwind for the ride home as well.

tarwheel 03-23-09 07:26 AM

I'm still recovering from the cold I caught last week, but at least I was able to ride today. I was only able to bike commute one day last week due to being sick, and I probably should not have ridden that day. Now comes the fun part of waiting for my sinuses to finally clear up. My legs feel fine but energy levels are down and breathing is impaired. I don't catch many colds or get sick in general very often, so I'm not used to riding when sick. It definitely takes some of the fun out of it, although I usually feel better after I have exercised.

Oh, and I got hit by a car. I was on a one way narrow street and a car tried to pass me without having enough space. His passenger side rear view mirror hit my handlebars. Luckily, both I and the bike were okay. The driver had the nerve to tell me that I needed to watch out behind me. The jerk.

My response to that (which I thought up but have never had the opportunity to use) is "Yeah, I should have seen you coming and moved to the center of the lane so that you can't try to pass when there isn't room. In the future I'll make sure to take up the whole lane when I see you coming."

Standalone 03-23-09 08:57 AM

This is looking like yet another 4 out of 5 week. Skipped today-- had a few things to do on the way home and then heard about 30MPH gusts out of the north...

neilfein 03-23-09 09:17 AM

This has been a lousy morning. My train was late getting into Newark, so I missed my connecting train to work. The next train was in an hour - during rush hour, weird. On top of that, I left a clava and a pair of gloves on the train.

HardyWeinberg 03-23-09 09:49 AM

34F and, counter to weather report, DRY. Speedy ride, maybe stored up burst after 3 days off. See what I've got tomorrow.

Replaced handlebars over the weekend, it was nice this morning, hopefully that lasts too.

caloso 03-23-09 10:32 AM

Chilly north wind. I was fine except for my fingers--just wearing glove liners and that wasn't really enough. Legs were a little heavy but not too bad.

mjw16 03-23-09 12:03 PM

Headwind. Irritating.

mangosalsa 03-23-09 12:38 PM

Nice morning ride. Very low traffic for a Monday too ... odd. According to the radio, which I hardly
listen to when riding, the temp went from 33* to 43* during the commute. Now it's 63* and I can't
wait to get back out there. Saw 1 other bike today.

Shinyville 03-23-09 04:13 PM

...tornado sirens came on while I was riding home, and huge gusts of wind came up, 60 or 70 mph. That was fun!

This is the only time I find myself riding on sidewalks. If I'm heading east, and there are massive wind gusts coming out of the south, they'll blow you right into traffic. Not fun.

buzzman 03-23-09 07:05 PM

strangely light traffic today- almost seemed like a holiday. But the cars that were on the road were moving fast:eek:

I was overtired- didn't sleep too well- and it was cold! Funny I rode all winter in 10-15〫F weather ( or below) with wind and snow. Now I'm so hungry for spring that it's feeling really cold at 26〫F. Didn't help that I left my beat up gross gloves somewhere and had to ride home with only Gore-tex mitten covers over my hands.

Stiff wind in my face the whole way home. Glad to be home toasty and warm.:p

daredevil 03-23-09 07:17 PM

For the first time in memory, I drove today. Raining hard and I didn't want to put up with it on a Monday. I'd rather ride in below zero weather and snow than rain. Anyway, I got a flat! That'll teach me!

bhop 03-23-09 09:58 PM

Man.. what a day.. windy as heck. Going to work.. headwind.. coming home from work.. headwind.. is it possible to have a headwind both directions? It sure felt like it... The wind was really kicking my butt. The drops didn't seem to help much.

In West Hollywood, in the bike lane ahead a guy is trying to push a BMW into a parking lot with little success.. apparently it's broken down. I stop and help cuz that's how my momma raised me.. BMW M3s are heavy..

Halfway home, my bike felt harder to pedal than it did when I was in some strong wind. I stop and check my rear tire and it's losing air. *piece of glass* At this point, i'm about 2 miles from home. I didn't feel like changing my rear tube since i'd have to deal with the derailleur, so I decide to walk home. I get a few blocks up the street and change my mind...

...so I take my time fixing it, i'm in no rush. It's actually kind of nice just hanging on a Hollywood street corner watching the different people walk by. At some point, a guy comes up to me and says something like "I just wanted to say, as a cyclist, from back there *points down the street*, it's kind of cool seeing you changing your tire underneath the Lance mural... good luck" I didn't really think about it and I was off to the side a little so didn't notice it.. funny coincidence.. heh..

anthegreat1 03-23-09 11:06 PM

today my commute was alot easier with my lighter bike built up.

sd_mike 03-23-09 11:52 PM

My afternoon commute pretty much sucked. It has been a couple weeks of good days, with one bad half day. With people on phones, big rigs NOT stopping for stop signs, many others oblivious to the rest of the travelling public, it wasn't fun. It would so help if people actually looked, especially while driving, the direction they are travelling! Other than that, a bit of a headwind. Morning ride was cooler, but nice. The distance each way is about 4 miles in a major city.

FredOak 03-24-09 05:52 AM

Brought the hybrid out for it's first ride of the year. 20*F but at least no wind.
Had to work harder then I thought, need to raise the seat a bit for the ride home and see.

tarwheel 03-24-09 06:46 AM

I'm finally turning the corner on the cold I've had for the past week. Felt much better riding to work today than I did yesterday, and finished my morning commute about 2 minutes faster despite getting caught by a lot of lights and encountering more wind. My wife was trying to talk me out of commuting yesterday due to my lingering cold, but -- as I told her -- I feel much better after exercising, so I don't think riding is making it worse. I feel somewhat vindicated now.

vtjim 03-24-09 06:49 AM

20F, blue sky, snow-capped Adirondacks. Light tailwind. I made good time. Caught & passed another MTB-riding commuter. Tried to drink water at a red light. Found I had a bottle full of slush.

Yesterday the headwind was bugging me so I did some woods/trail riding instead of slogging it out on the MUP all the way home. That worked out well.

neilfein 03-24-09 06:51 AM

Since moving, and since my carpool is off, I've settled into a new bike/train routine - leaving from one train station in the AM, getting off one station early in the afternoon to bump the commute from 3 miles to 5 RT. It also gets rid of one nasty bit of road-rage-prone roadway, a section that's worse in one direction than the other.

The ride home yesterday evening went well. Good weather, and I had a friendly chat with a guy in the train station while I was recombobulating. (Unfolding the bike, etc.) On the way back. I saw a woman struggling to carry a desk across the street by herself, so I helped her out.

Later that evening, I was in the garage and noticed that my front tire was flat - for the second time in a week, after sitting my my garage. This brought up the possibility that there's something wrong with the rim, maybe a spoke poking out? The chain is getting stretched and there are a few fiddly things wrong with it, so I'm going to bring it to the shop after work. No bike commute for me today!

jpdesjar 03-24-09 07:54 AM

it was windy and cold this morning...i worked hard
this will probably be the toughest riding all week

my thighs are sore

making 03-24-09 08:09 AM

Very nice ride.

Had some gang banger looking guy try to ask me directions to another street a few streets over. It was in the worse area I ride through. Felt bad for not stopping but there were lots of places for others to hide, told him to turn right at the light as I rode away, I did slow down a bit. Hate to be a jerk but it was about 0500 in a bad area.
