Well, for being 10 to 15 degrees below our average temps all week I still had a great week of riding to work and back. The roads and trails have been in good shape. By the time I get home from work today I should have just under 140 miles on the week in commuting and feeling great. Now if we could just get some warmer weather.

It's really encouraging reading these posts, sometimes you feel like your the only one living, riding and dealing with cold, rain and strong head winds.... I guess you get it pretty much everywhere. Thanks

I totally thought this would be my first full week of bike commuting, but the radio came on to wake me up predicting hail on the way home.
So I said "hail no!" and hit the snooze. |
Woke up, forgot to check the temp before I left. Riding down alley though to myself, "Dang, it's pretty cold." Then the sleet started. By the time I travelled about 1/2 mile, sleet was building up on the cars. Then another couple miles and lower elevation it was just rain. Tonight it's supposed to freeze. But at least it may be a sunny commute home, even if cold.

Just a wonderful, wonderful commute in! Bright sun, 63 degrees F, breezy but I only seemed to encounter headwinds when going downhill, new Randonee bike. No classes to teach, so I skipped the subway portion of my ride in and rode the whole 20 miles through Toluca Lake, Griffith Park and Silverlake. Didn't even mind getting to work.

You guys are really making me appreciate California weather. No rain again, warm enough to wear a t-shirt before the sun came up, and I got a friendly wave from a pair of bicycle police officers on my way in.

Commute for morning shift: Dark, cold, and rainy. I drove the Subaru instead of getting cold and wet.
Commute for evening shift: Twilight, clear, 45 degrees, very little traffic, polite motorists, and lights that changed just as I was slowing down. What a difference a few hours makes... |
Windy! blew downtown on the bike path. Struggled home in the wind and dark on the way home. Last night rode in the rain and thunder with wind but a quiet ride home in the fog.
|
Sunny, clear, and with considerate, aware cagers. Some days, riding a bike just feels "right".

Didn't have to go anywhere today, but rode a 72 mile trip yesterday to my friend's house. I hauled a ton of tools on my X-check to get his bike road worthy. It was really windy, gusts up to ~45 mph. At one portion, the wind was with me and I was moving ~27 mph. A car was slowly overtaking me on the left and tried to turn into a lot, right through me... I slammed on the brakes and ended hitting his side going almost parallel to the car at 5-7 mph. I'm fine; his car has a scratch from my panier. The kid claimed he didn't see me. Besides that minor accident, the ride was great.

Nice smooth ride in this morning: a little on the + side of 50F/ call it 11C with just a fuzz of "headbreeze."
I love riding this time of year--the novelty of comfortable conditions hasn't worn off yet. :D |
I was riding on the wind this morning; nice tailwind, I flew. I really lucked out with the conditions since I was incredibly sore and achey from working on the basement all weekend-didn't think I'd even have the strength to get out of bed. Stopped to check on a homeless guy at the foot of one of the bridges near the airport; he was lying in the path and didn't even appear to be alive. I turned around, stopped about 11 feet from him and shined my headlight. When he finally woke up I asked him if he was ok, he said he was and slowly pulled himself together. I think he was sleeping one off. The rest of the ride was uneventful and I think it actually helped to alleviate some of my aches and paines.

Warm
It was a pleasant ride in shorts at 50 F (10 C). The next couple days are supposed to be chillier, but we will see. Even if it rains today, it will still be warm. Keep the warm days coming.
|
First day back from vacation. Fastest ride of the season so far though. Clearly I didn't lose my legs. High 30sF and calm wind. Overcast.
I saw bmike enjoying the scenery. :) My wife and I went to Seattle, Victoria and Vancouver BC. Lots of fixies and cyclists in general. :thumb: We rented a tandem in Vancouver and rode around Stanley Park for 3 hours. Really pretty. |

Fabulous weather here in DC. Cool morning, low humidity, not much breeze to speak of. Cars have been ultra-polite these last two weeks---signaling me to go ahead at 4-way stops when they arrived first, etc.

When I woke up this morning, the forecast was showing a 10% chance of rain doring the time I'd be riding. Long story short, I ended up riding to work fromn the train station in cotton trousers in the rain. Only half a mile, but still not the best experience.
From now on, if there's any chance of rain at all, I put on the rain pants. |
I also had a nice tail wind coming in this morning. It was 26F but I saw a beautiful sunrise (it's still dark when I leave the house). It's suppose to only get up to around 36F, windy and cloudy... hey, it's a Monday. We might get lucky by the middle of the week and hit 50F. Anyway, it was still a very nice ride in this morning.

The forecast was calling for severe thunderstorms this morning, so I figured I would be driving today. However, when I got up, there were no storms showing up on the radar, so I headed to work on my bike. The pollen is so thick right now in NC that it looks like snow in my headlight. About halfway to work, I started feeling light sprinkles and it started raining hard right as I was approaching my office. Normally I take a lap around the building to round up the trip to 10 miles, but I headed right to the door today. Unfortunately, in my effort to get going quickly this morning, I forgot my door pass, so had to ride around the building to another entrance that doesn't need a pass. So I ended up getting a little wet but not soaked. I had to carry my bike into my office to avoid tracking pollen on the carpets. Seriously.

6 inches of wet sloppy snow on the ground this morning. I put the studs back on and set out, it was a nice ride. Very peaceful, beautiful in the section through the woods, and still nice in town.

pleasant riding this morning
it was sunny and 35º or so i may get soaked on the ride home but there is a chance i may beat it home i put a new chain ring on this weekend and i am feeling a difference...it feels more efficient and sturdier and i think the ring may be rounder than the old one |
20F. One day it is winter the next spring. This time of year is tiring.
Was doing a TT workout until I started encountering ice and decided to slow down. I plan on retrying the workout on the way home when it is supposed to be 54F out. |
Windy!!! Put higher spoke count wheels on this past weekend... could really feel the stiffness difference, but there was lots more drag!
|
Waved it off, on my way out the door, the rain was coming down hard, visibility 10ft. Went upstairs, forecast snow later today.
|
I bailed on Friday and worked from home. I don't know if we ever got the predicted 40-mph+ gusts, but it was pretty windy all day.
The forecast this morning called for am showers. I think I got caught in the worst of them as I could barely see at one point. I was stopped at a light before it really started raining. A driver passing me going the opposite direction pointed at me and said something to his passenger. I'd like to think he was saying, "Boy, that guy's hard core" but more likely he was saying, "Boy, that guy's nucking futs." :) |
nice and warm today, 7C, a little windy. On the you-don't-see-that-everyday front, there was a guy in a parking lot twirling a flaming baton. Very entertaining.
|
Weather forecast said it would be around 14C. I thought it over and thought I'd wear a thermal longsleeve under my short sleeved jersey, just to be sure. Just had an errand to run for my wife, and it actually turned out to be 24C. At the end of the one-way I should have taken off the thermal, but I was a bit lazy and thought I'd ride back with it still on. I had the wind in my favor, making it even warmer.
Seriously... The weather is getting awesome :D |
A beautiful day in the River City. 47F and blue skies on the way to the office this morning. Should be in the 70s on the way home.
