Dangnabbit - back in the cage today - all swollen up after just two commutes. f-ing hamstring injuries ...

HardyWeinberg 07-22-08 10:27 AM

Great fast ride. New chain, cassette, and scrupulously cleaned crankset, so just flew.

77midget 07-22-08 10:27 AM

Last night's ride was nice. Managed to sneak between a couple small weather systems, and stayed dry all the way.

This morning, I was tired, so I tried to keep it slow, which just about worked, as I was a couple (2) minutes slower, but found myself still going fast in some areas. I seem to have this problem a lot where I cannot intentionally ride slower :)

Well I tested my knee out after giving it a week and half off yesterday but it hurts today. I'm not liking the direction this is going so I scheduled an appointment with an Orthopedic today. Bad news is, the appointment isn't until August 5th when my health benefits finally kick in. I'm staying off the bike until then for fear I could be making the injury worst. This sucks pretty bad but who knows, maybe another two weeks of rest might help it.

caloso 07-22-08 10:34 AM

Another cool day. Actually wore a longsleeved jersey this morning. And brought a set of my team kit in my backpack in case I get a chance to go on the local Tuesday night hammerfest this evening.

Itsjustb 07-22-08 10:39 AM

In 3 years of commuting I've never run into my friend Todd (a fellow commuter) on the way to work in the morning. Today it finally happened, though I had to bust my hump trying to catch him. Then he (unintentionally) humiliated me by mentioning that today was a "recovery ride". :-|

About 1/4 mile from our building we saw a fellow commuter pulled over on the grass. We stopped and asked him if he needed help. He didn't--he was changing a flat and had just pulled his kit out of his bag. Still, it felt good even to offer.

first commute in about two weeks, went fairly well although the legs were feeling the 80 mile ride on sunday.. thinking about changing the gearing on the SS but i might try a tire change first and see how that effects the ride. ride time was just at two hours since there are some climbs. i think i'm going to take the long way home and head down to the coast

Bulldozer 07-22-08 10:45 AM

Yesterday's ride home was sweet - great tailwind so I hauled *****. The ride in this morning was warm. I was doing intervals today and a sprint at the end. That heated me up pretty good. With the weather in the 90's in the afternoons, I'm not seeing as many commuters.

GPSRanger 07-22-08 10:53 AM

Average speed

I generally average 10MPH on my commutes. The fastest that I have ever gotten my MTB to go is 18 but that's with the wind to my back and going downhill! So my commute to/from work is 9 miles and I make it in an hour, sometimes 45 minutes when I feel like pushing it.

Kotts 07-22-08 01:21 PM

A bit damp this AM. We had some serious storms rolling through around 3-4 this morning, but it was down to light rain by the time I left at 5:50. By the time I was 1/3 of the way to the office, it was completely stopped.

Rode a bit slower (wet manhole covers and steel plates set into the pavement make me cautious), but otherwise no big deal.

Now the total lack of hot water in the shower, on the other hand...

atombob 07-22-08 01:44 PM

Wet. Wasn't supposed to be so I didn't grab any rain gear. Just rode off in my dress pants and button down shirt. Guess I'm screwed for the ride home. Wet and cold. lol!

coldfeet 07-22-08 03:23 PM

Going out the door this AM looked at the time... Yikes! quick call, "sorry, running about half hour late" Got on the bike, nice tail wind and great conditions, saw another rider on a similar, but in my opinion, inferior bike trying to catch me. Can't have that! Spent maybe half the journey cranking it out in top gear, a new personal best time! 42 minutes! Wahooo!

matt.critchlow 07-22-08 03:34 PM

Well, this is about yesterday. but it was amazing, great marine layer in the morning so i didn't sweat like a monster. but of course i did going home. The main highlight yesterday was biking past a guy yesterday, who i noticed was extremely tall(and I'm almost 6'6"). Coming up to a stoplight a while later another biker at the light next to me says "Do you know who you passed going up that hill?" and to my obvious answer of no he replied "That was Bill Walton." Pretty cool :)

77midget 07-22-08 04:31 PM

I think I have turned a corner of sorts. I was tired today, but getting on the bike was second nature, and getting the hills behind me to get home was just part of the ride-didn't press or push or anything, just got it done. It was a bit cooler today and not as humid, so it was a nice ride.

Turning another corner, I think that I have outgrown my pedal clips/straps. I notice that I cannot get the ball of my foot exactly where I want in order to pedal efficiently, and I am not getting power from every part of the rotation. Time for clipless shoes and pedals.

Really starting to love commuting.

wez312 07-22-08 07:35 PM

I actually saw another biker on my commute back home today...that was kinda exciting

girljen 07-22-08 08:52 PM

The ride home was sunny and hot and crowded and icky...but it was quiet, so I was happy.

bhop 07-22-08 09:16 PM

Ride to work was normal.. pretty smooth ride.

Ride home was ok too, but at one point, some lady that thinks rules don't apply to her almost got killed by me and/or the car that was to the left of me. We were cruising fast, maybe 25-30ish.. (down a slight grade) light starts to change, we're close enough to the intersection to go through the yellow, and this snooty lookin' lady starts walking without even looking, before her signal even changed.. my squeaky front brake probably saved her life because she looked when it started squealin....

trombone 07-22-08 10:49 PM

Cold cold cold. 5C this morning. My fingers were numb when I got to work.

Thomas Brock 07-23-08 05:29 AM

Oddly enough, trombone, my ride was the opposite: It's nearing 80F in Eastern NC and it was pretty darned humid as well.

It was still a good ride.

77midget 07-23-08 06:09 AM

there was a bit of a mist rain this morning, and damp roads, but otherwise a nice ride, even if a bit slow. There is nasty weather heading this way though, and the ability to ride home is not 100%. We'll see.

Moskau 07-23-08 06:21 AM

My bed was really cozy this morning and I did contemplate not getting up... ;) I however crawled out of bed and didn't regret biking to work! There was rain a part of the way but it was refreshing.

I feel I'm getting stronger and it's always getting easier to cruise. I've actually started wondering whether to try to search for a second hand road bike. I love my mountain bike but because I use it regularly for off road biking I don't want to strip it of its knobby tires.

girljen 07-23-08 06:27 AM

I was riding down the street at a pretty good pace, daydreaming and enjoying the sunrise, when I felt a "thwack!" against my contact lens. WTF! I wiped my eye and saw......a bug.

When I got to work to change clothes, I found a little piece of what used to be that bug in the corner of my eye, resting on my inner eyelid.

Ick.

jasonsstover 07-23-08 07:24 AM

Monday was quite humid, but cool. Had mist on my headlight. Monday night ride home from work was pretty nice. My wife was out walking the dog on the MUP so I walked with them the last half mile.

This morning's ride in was nice. Pretty cool, about 63 F and overcast. I hope to get four days in this week. Yesterday I had a customer appointment, so I had to drive.

jpdesjar 07-23-08 07:44 AM

enjoyed the ride this morning, legs felt really good and i am really feeling the new pedals
GR-9s are great for soft soled shoes

for some reason i was thinking about how i am going to set the bike up for winter riding...YIKES

;)

DataJunkie 07-23-08 07:56 AM

I could have done without this wakeup call.

So, I was running early this morning and rode through downtown denver and took a LRT line that runs through the east side of downtown.
Took the line to dayton. Headed south on Dayton to Orchard. Then headed west on Orchard through a decent sized intersection that leads under our main North South highway. While approaching it a double turn lane in the opposite direction decided to go even with me coming closer and closer. I slow down avoiding the last idiot while simultaneously showing my displeasure with a certain finger. Then another car decided to go in the far turn lane. So here I am riding at about 15-20 mph with the hood of a SUV looming about 20 feet away. I slammed on my brakes and flew around the backside of the SUV barely missing it.
My only thoughts were "not again!" and "no way am I going to the hospital for a second time this year".
The wife had noted that my reaction times seem to be improving in day to day activities. Guess that is a good thing. Oh and I should have listened to the voice in my head that said it would have been a good idea to avoid that intersection.

Office parks suck!

...but I am still in one piece. Time to augment that route.
