Kind of cool this morning. Rode my Diamondback Edgewood hybrid today. Nice quiet ride in with no problems.

72F and sunny. Really nice ride today. There were a lot of other bike commuters this morning -- I guess I'm not the only fair-weather commuter.

I had a reflective t-shirt, which I quickly donned and got out to direct traffic and keep things moving so that emergency vehicles could get to the victims.

Good job. I'm glad to hear you (and the others) provided assistance; it gives me hope in humanity.

Didn't you have another incident recently on this same path? Something about a possibly-suicidal man?

Have you seen the video from the NASCAR race at Talladega on Sunday? Carl Edwards' car got fully airborne and came very close to going into the grandstands. The debris flying off his car alone injured 7 spectators, breaking one person's jaw. :(

I'm happy to report that all my commutes lately have been uneventful.

Another chilly ride in. I'm seriously done with this 15C below seasonal weather. (the ride was still awesome though).

I'm not the only cyclist at work anymore, there's 2 of us now (that's a 100% increase in bicyclists!).

HardyWeinberg 04-28-09 08:46 AM

RAIN (not our usual mist/drizzle)

Ka_Jun 04-28-09 09:56 AM

Hi 60Fs this morning, last night it was 91F...man, my lungs were burning and my throat was parched.

jpdesjar 04-28-09 10:10 AM

the weather was perfect this morning...riding in shorts is always wonderful
should be pretty warm on the ride home

i may have to sit outdoors and enjoy a libation when i get home

nebuchenezzar 04-28-09 02:43 PM

Ride in this morning was awesome. 60ish and no wind. Got passed by a rider this morning. Caught me totally by surprised. First guy thats passed me in a month. Need to pedal harder...

Denvertoad 04-28-09 08:13 PM

First day of cycle commuting... nervous nellie forgot to pack his shoes. Spent day in Dockers, shirt, tie and MTB shoes. Sidi fashion statement. Won't be doing that twice!!!

blxm 04-29-09 04:38 AM

Excellent. Found out that the local Transport Management Organisation (TMO) which iwas set up to encourage intelligent commuting had arranged for some free bike fixing/ checking at the Marriott car park so I went there instead of work at 0800. Nice lady gave me a lift to the office from there.

Mech guy called at 1100 to say my bike is fine and come and get it. "It's old but you've looked after it, right?". Yip. Saved me £30. Happy days.:thumb:

I beat the rain in, and the temp was very pleasant, around 60 f ( 15 c). Going home will probably be in rain, but I am still on a high from having consistent days of warm weather, so no problem. They took thunderstorms out of the forecast, and that is good. All the drivers behaved themselves, so no issues
there, either.

tarwheel 04-29-09 06:06 AM

Another warm, clear morning in NC. I'm continuing to wear my arm and leg warmers and vest, despite temperatures in the low 60s in mornings. Just can't quite get used to riding bare armed and legged yet. My vest is high-viz yellow, so I wear it more for safety but pretty soon it will be too warm for it even in morning. Rode the single-speed this morning and can't believe how much faster I commute on it. It's at least 5 lbs. lighter than the touring bike I normally commute on, plus I'm forced to keep my speed up on the hills rather than gearing down. It's a nice change of pace.

vtjim 04-29-09 06:41 AM

40F with a light tailwind. Not many people out this morning. I saw bmike again, riding the other way.

Got dropped by a big pileated woodpecker. :p

There was much shattered glass on the MUP in one place this morning. I saw it and went around it, and then warned two couples who were walking dogs.

hnsq 04-29-09 06:49 AM

rain on the way home yesterday.

I still wonder when my co-workers will stop offering me rides when it is raining.

Ka_Jun 04-29-09 07:15 AM

Colder than I thought, this morning. Upper 40Fs and felt like it. Only had shorts, jersey, vest on. Saw one roadie going the opposite direction. Man, I love riding in.

duckbill 04-29-09 07:27 AM

Kinda cool at 4 degrees C this morning but sunny. Speaking of buts, passed a very attractive young lady and we exchanged good mornings. Sigh... if only I was 20 years younger.

JCFlack 04-29-09 07:50 AM

My first round trip commute yesterday - I've ridden all the way home several times and have commuted to the Metro, but this was the first all-bike day. The amazing thing is that I made both trips (about 12 miles to work and 9 back - shorter route) in just over an hour each way on a VERY slow bike.

jpdesjar 04-29-09 08:56 AM

warm ride home yesterday
this morning the temps were back to normal and i held the longest track stand while waiting for a train to go by

that was fun

As always the commute is a pleasure.

But the new twist is that the locker/shower is closed for repair. So I've been showering outdoors under a tall spigot (still wearing bike shorts) and then a deck change. The cold shower in the breeze is very invigorating.

Haven't you heard? If you have lots of money, you don't need to be 20 years younger! Just pass her your phone number written on an ATM receipt showing your account balance.

Great commute this morning. Very foggy through the valley, and I left my waterproof windbreaker at work so I wore a sweatshirt. Got soaked! REALLY makes me appreciate that windbreaker.

jyossarian 04-29-09 09:25 AM

Saw a wobbly dude in b-ball shorts riding to work, and found a fair weather fixie locked up to the post I usually lock to. Cool and nice, I could use more spring days like this.

HardyWeinberg 04-29-09 09:35 AM

~45F, precip right about the center of the mist/drizzle continuum.

rumrunn6 04-29-09 12:53 PM

wow it took a long time to get into this thread today - almost as long as my commute and now I don't even remember my ride ...

actually the ride was fine and my back wheel feels good, I had broken a spoke and the wheel went out of true, LBS fixed me up for $24

I'm now riding on my feet over the worst bumps

BikeLover1989 04-29-09 01:54 PM

Today's commute was kind of slow in the morning thanks to the headwind and the temperature being only 4C at the time. On the way home, very fast. My leg muscles are now getting fitter and fitter due to the mostly uphill commute to my place of work.

grey_falcon 04-29-09 04:45 PM

Well I'm a lurker no more... today's commute was... interesting to say the least. The route to school was ok sure I'm passing a school i should be going to cause its really close... but that's besides the point... It was 8 degress Celcius when left home and it was 14 when i left the school, though on the way home was interesting, while leaving the school i had one driver honk at me for no reason, then i saw one biker going in the same direction in front of me and since he was on a mountain bike (Yea i now own a hybrid bike) i passed him. As i passed him i waved, then got a little a head of him then i get honked at by this red minivan so the other biker comes up beside me and we talk a bit about how some drivers don't like bikers and about him getting into an accident. So anyways we then have to go our separate ways and as i get to the intersection by my place i see another biker and another wave. So yea... that's my commute for the day...

Iowegian 04-29-09 04:54 PM

It was a glorious ride in for me this morning, temps were higher than usual and it's the first day this year I rode in without tights. Glad I did, too, since I had to remove some clothing half way as it was verrry nice. Right now there is that rarest of things for me, a tailwind on the way home. I ride towards the mountains in the afternoon and in our local micro-climate that usually means a headwind in the late afternoon. Today however, there must be some weather out east that is creating a wind that should zip me home. What a perfect day.

Nerdanel 04-29-09 05:00 PM

Beautiful weather, but I had to be driven to and from the subway yesterday and today instead of riding because my cat bit me good right before he died of heart failure, poor thing, and the bite is now infected. I'm supposed to hold my hand up in the air all the time, even while sleeping, which is a neat trick. It hurts like heck and I miss my cat.

con 04-29-09 05:07 PM

sunny, blue skies and in the low 50's. The ride home should be in the 60's

ryanwood 04-29-09 06:01 PM

I had a tail wind today so I went for the hill climb from hell. I don't usually ride up that hill on my commute because I am just trying to get around, but I was feeling inspired with my tailwind.

My first commute!

I just finished building up a road/commuter bike and today was my first try at commuting. The ride was a little over 5 miles. I live outside about 25 miles of town, so I drove to the outskirts of town and parked and biked from there. I got started a little after 7:00 AM and the ride took just under 30 minutes to get to work.

I'm not used to riding in traffic but it was light today and at that hour things went pretty well. One section of the ride I was on the sidewalk and came to a light where a lot of cars make right-hand turns. My route took me straight. I think I should have pressed the crosswalk button as we didn't automatically get a walk signal. My point is I should have kept to the road and just stayed in the right lane and let the cars planning on making the right turn get over into the turn lane.

Oh well, the afternoon ride started about 5:30 PM and I took a different route back to my truck. The road heading away from campus was narrower, only two lanes, and no bike lane. Cars were backed up from the light and I followed other bikers on the sidewalk. I got onto a large east-west road that was somewhat hilly, I kept to the sidewalk as there was not a bike lane. Reading over the rules of the road and looking through this forum, I probably should have bit the bullet and kept to the right lane. It took about 35 minutes to get back to the truck and the ride home. Doh! I should have packed some Gatorade.

I'm not used to glancing over my shoulder and I found the backpack I had was a little too heavy to swing around to look to the rear. I'll probably get a clip on mirror for my helmet. Also, I'm not comfortable moving over into traffic to get to the left-hand turn lane.

I'm in north central Florida and the weather was beautiful today! I hope to commute this way at least once or twice a week.
