Good ride for me this morning, my second day of bike commuting. My first day was last Thursday. I was a little bit more comfortable, but still very alert. I also shaved 5 minutes off of my time from last week, but that doesn't really matter to me since I'm not racing.

Got this crazy cutoff move put on me this morning, I was stopping for my parking lot when a guy in old rattletrap crapbox pickup buzzed past me and in front of me to beat me into the lot. Whatever dude.
Just me and the 7 yr old this morning, 1st time this week dropping only 1 kid. Leave work early this evening to bring the 3 yr old to her swim class at the Y. |
I ride from the south side of Richmond, VA into Downtown. The toughest spots are in Chesterfield County part of the ride, where the county in their lack of wisdom years ago made 10 foot lanes and no shoulders. Almost immediately when I pass into the city limits, I hit bike lanes or at least wide shoulders. The only place where I get off the road is to cross from my neigborhood into an adjacenet neighborhood to avoid a very tough, narrow lane hill and then again when I cross the James River (I use the sidewalk for that) because I am just too nervous about the traffic on the bridge with no space for me. For those of you familiar, I ride over the Nichol Bridge by Byrd Park.

Today was a great ride in. Nice and cool here these days in the morning. Had a couple weeks off the bike and after 4 straight commute days, I'm finally getting back up to speed. First couple days back on the bike were SO frustrating. I felt like I was on day one again! Ordered some fenders for the upcoming "weather", as much weather as we get here in the Eggo, anyway.

yes it was a bit cool this morning and my hands were cold when i arrived at work but it was so dang invigorating...i love the cripsness of fall
i could imagine barrelling down munjoy would be cool...rock climbing eh? good for you my buddy climbs too, i have always been interested in trying For me, riding a bike is purely functional/environmental. Climbing keeps me sane. |
Lost my front blinky, today. Deployed the jacket today, bit on the cooler side. Saw a whole lot of commuters, passing and being passed. Strangely, only two of us locked up, today. Other bike commuters, where you at?

Crisp and clear this morning. At the bottom of the big hill, I was in a full tuck trying to make the light. I was 3 car lengths from the intersection, when a 5-series pulled out of the left lane into the right in the middle of the intersection. I braked a little to start with, as I figured the car would keep goiing ahead down the road, but no. The idiot blocked my whole lane so they could make a right turn, then stopped for a pedestrian. I locked up both brakes for a good 5 feet before I could deke around the back of the car. I'm going to start riding with my light on in the morning. This is getting stupid.
yeah, got my lights on now as well. My poor knees are still giving me grief, not used to daily riding after a 3 week layoff (really wore myself out doing the Transrockies last month) the ride home yesterday was a bit congested, still looking for different options there. |
really nice ride in this morning. amazing how quiet the bike path is after Labor Day.
Met a friend over in Cambridge tonight and was impressed by the improvements to Mass Ave.. The construction around Central Sq. is completed. Nice smooth pavement and shiny new bike lanes. Rode bike lanes all over with him and finally hooked back up to the bike path (Cambridge side) and rode home. Very pleasant.:) |
rained on me half way home. still very nice.

Today was a mixed day but a good day to ride. It was gorgeous out and I was just getting over three days of hay fever and an acute sinus headache. I started out not wanting to ride but knew if I rode I'd feel much better. Today I was also testing out my old/new back pack. This is one of those day packs that hikers wear. It was pretty heavy and unfortunately when I started out I loaded it up wrong and it kept hitting the back of my helmet. I stopped, fixed it and kept going. I also was trying out a new rear wheel. The original rear wheel failed after 16 months. Something wrong in the bearings or cluster ratchet mechanism. The new wheel rides like a dream and is silent.
The ride itself went well, at first I thought it might be a bit chilly (I like it hot) as it was only in the upper 60's. But after a while it was nice. As I crossed Rt 9 in Marlboro, NJ I approached a cemetery. It's one of the many that were busy after 9/11/2001 (today's ride was on 9/11). I hadn't forgotten, there was one lady visiting a grave. I was surprised not to see more people there but maybe it was too early in the day. I remember 9/10/2001, I had ridden out to the Hoffbraugh House in the Atlantic Highlands. I stopped to look on the towers and the NYC skyline. I love the NYC skyline, my grandfather, uncle and father were Iron Workers. My Uncle worked on the towers and I loved to look at the towers (I are an engineer). I always stop to take a look at the NYC skyline when I ride by the Hoffbrough House. 9/10/2001 was a nicely warm day, a good day to ride. I also remember the day after, 9/11, it started out like today. I won't forget but I was still glad I was riding today, that I could ride. As I said it was a good day to ride. |
Nice Day out. The weather has been a little cooler in San Diego. I only have a 4 mile ride to work but I take the busiest road that is a business route of the i15. No problems with other drivers. I am sure some of them are used to seeing me by now. Esp since I have been riding it for over the last year.
I didn't want to ride home tonight. 8:45pm was tired from teaching karate all day but I knew once I got on the bike I would be ok. Got the lights on the bike threw on my reflective vest and set out. Night was cool glad I have started bring in a pull over shirt that is warm, although shorts are still fine. Saw an Idiot on the road with his MTB no lights and no reflectors and wearing darker colors, also no helmet. I caught most of the lights and didn't have to go through any red lights since there was plenty of traffic to get the lights to green. Sometimes I have to run the reds cause there are no cars around and it takes forever for the light to change or I have to completely unclip both feet to get to the button for the cross walk. 1 more day of work then get to do my longer rides this weekend. 20 miles on Sat and 50 miles on Sunday. |
Was mucho warm for september morning. Also Roads were wet.
|
Nice ride this morning. Mostly sunny. High 50sF. Gnarly bit of headwind. I plowed through okay. Seems I might get rained upon during my ride home. :( Tailwind though! :thumb:
I saw a squirrel with half a tail. Cute little dude. |
Wife is sicker then a dog, so I had to get all the kids off to school, by then it was pouring and I was already an hour late for work, so I drove.
|
great ride in, tackled the big hill too...i brought gloves but didnt really need them...i am going to have to get used to the feeling of gloved hands on the handlebar...ick
|
Fantastic ride in! Broke my time record. Friendly cagers. What more could a guy ask for?

Nice ride this morning, humid with wet roads in southeast MO. What a blessing to be able to commute by bicycle!
|
Didn't ride today; too windy (20mph winds with 44mph gusts) thanks to Hurricane Ike. Got new fenders and my Brooks B17 saddle yesterday, so I've got my weekend project lined up. ;)
|
Last 2 days haven't rained...but Tues and Wed I was up at 05:20 into my cycling gear....breakfast....then the heavens opened - too wet to cycle. Bummer. Yesterday and today was great, dark, no traffic. 19k commute west out of Dublin to Kildare...

I hate tram tracks....
I also hate these temps. It was about 15C this morning, and I wasn't sure how to dress. I ended up with short sleeves under a jacket, and ended up too hot! I removed the jacket, and had to put it back on because I was freezing. I got to ride down by the river, however, and it was beautiful. But those stupid tram tracks, I just can't seem to ride anywhere near them without sooner or later, getting a tire down inside. :-( Very irritating. :-) -Jon |
Pinch flat 10 minutes in. Too far to walk back. Too early to bother waking up the wife. Threw on my slow leak spare and got to the bus stop about 3 miles away.
Last 5 commutes = 6 flats. Common denominator is the slime tire liners. I"m ditching them. I think with the high pressure tires, they add just that much more pressure on the tube against the rim. I'll be upgrading rim tape as well, but I'm just going to bite the bullet and upgrade my tires to Marathon Plus's or Conti Gators or something. The liners aren't worth the hastle. |
ride home last night, I was flying, fastest trip ever. Had my first confrontation with a motorist on my new route and was surprised with who it was. You'd figure someone else on two wheels would have a clue with what we go through out there. Some knob on a Harley parked behind me at a traffic light says "hey, this ain't the bike path, get the #$@! out of the way." I just snorted and ignored him (a year ago I'd have yapped at him, I held back, I must be getting smarter). He switched lanes and went around me.

Friday! Huzzah! Traffic was thick today. After a summer off, people are re-learning to drive. Signalling a lane change? Nah. Shoulder-checking? Nope. I'm not much better - I have to turn my biker-sens-o-matic up to full power, after it being mostly off over the summer.
I am going to get my lights up and running this weekend for sure! |
Low 50's and rain the entire way. This was the first time this entire year where I used all of my rain gear. The Portland was AWESOME! So, that is 2 days this week commuting in the rain. Monday was more misty with wet pavement. Today was a good constant rain. :D
I had fun riding in the rain! Felt kind of like being a kid again! Can't wait for the ride home! |
