We had a surprise snowfall in NC early this morning, making it a real mess outside. The temperature was hovering just above freezing and falling, so I opted to drive today. Not worth the potential troubles for me to ride my bike. It's been one of my worst weeks for bike commuting all year. I couldn't ride on Monday and Tuesday due to an out-of-town trip, and now this. I did manage to ride on Wednesday and Thursday, so it wasn't a complete bust. The weekend isn't looking much better, with record low temperatures in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Another chilly ride but fun as heck. Stupid clamp on rear fender got all kitty-wampus on me somehow halfway to work so I had to stop and readjust.

FredOak 11-21-08 07:35 AM

23 degrees, but not much wind or traffic. So I said what the heck and took it up two gears on my 1.5 mile 143 foot hill and did it seated and just a little bit of effort...that made for a great start of a day!

Last night's ride was pretty good, overall. Probably one of the strongest, if not fastest, rides I've had so far. There was one point, though, where I got a good scare. I was riding down E. Railroad and with the sun down a good 20 minutes, it was pretty dark, even with the street lights. All of a sudden I hear a dog, and I mean a BIG dog, barking in the yard across the street. Forget about being startled, I was more worried to know if the dog was fenced, chained, or running loose. If the latter, there was no way I was going to out distance him; the best I could hope for was to grab my pump and give Rover a rhinoplasty. Luckily, he was fenced, but it definitely got my heart beat raised.

Didn't ride today. I was planning on it until I read a correction in yesterday's paper saying that the Neville Brothers are playing tonight and not Saturday, as was reported earlier this week.

No ride in this morning for me; my wife gave me a ride and I'll bike home this afternoon.

It was in weather similar to this 3 years ago that I took the header off my bike. 15 stitches in my face taught me my lesson.

OK, they didn't teach ME anything but they taught my wife something: Don't let your husband ride on days where it rained/snowed overnight and it's hovering around freezing in the morning.

As is normal for me by the end of the week, my legs were not totally there. I took it slow and didn't have any problems. It was sunny and temperatures were in the 60's.

Started snowing here in Philly this morning. Made for a beautiful commute this morning.

Well, I'm proud to say that I did my first bike commute today. It wasn't a long one, but I did 2.5 miles to pick up my bus that drops me off about a quarter mile from work. The weather today was 24 degrees with just a hint of wind. I actually did a good job of layering on my torso, but not so much on my legs. I need a base layer that will keep me warmer. IT wasn't so bad when I was riding, but I was about 20 minutes early to the bus stop because I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss it. I wasn't sure of the exact pickup time, or how long it would take me to get there, so I made sure I had plenty of time. The only problem of course is that my legs froze while waiting. I did some clinching exercises that kept me warm.

Bus ride was unremarkable, except for busting my finger pretty bad trying to get the bike rack on the front of the bus down. That hurt with cold fingers.

Now I'm warm and toasty at work. I will definitely pick up some long underwear for monday's ride. The wife is picking me up today since we're having dinner in the area.

Was 13F this morning with a 15mph tailwind. I drove my car. Last night I rode home in a 15-20 mph headwind and a 25F temp and it nearly wiped me out. I know I wimped out. I also need my car today because I am going to check out a new (used) bike later this afternoon.

jpdesjar 11-21-08 08:37 AM

It was a cold one this morning I decided to wear the long underwear. I felt a bit slower since I had extra layers on but it will only make me stronger.

7°F this morning, and a nice ride in. First day with the Dinotte 140L taillight. Oddly enough, most people passed me CLOSER than I'm used to (usually I ride with two SuperFlashes). I think the 140L might be irritating the drivers.

I still can't complain, nobody buzzed me, but usually they give me a full lane, and this morning it was more like 5 feet.

Anyway, a nice ride, and brisk temps. Didn't see any deer today. 2 days ago the radio was talking about car/deer collisions on the rise, and while they were talking I looked to the right and saw three does standing there watching me pass, about 50 feet off the road.

floriderron 11-21-08 09:36 AM

Beautiful ride in today. Sun was shinning and temp was around 50. Headwind was only about 5 but the ride home is supposed to shift to 15-20, headwinds again. I will survive.

Not for me. I still won't do snow (I have slicks). I *did* see one of the guys I occasionally ride with on the Kelly Drive path as I drove by. I wanted to slow down and honk/wave, but the traffic behind me would've been none too pleased. My only commute this week was Wednesday, when it was a nice 27-degrees in the morning. I loved it.

Timothy: what's your route?

Cold

svtmike 11-21-08 12:00 PM

Really nice ride in today. 16 degrees and sunny, only a 4mph wind out of the west according to wunderground.com.

The wind was probably more like 15mph out of the northwest, but who's quibbling?

Doohickie 11-21-08 12:19 PM

I'm not worthy.

It was a balmy 32 F here in Texas. Still, it was my coldest commute yet. My coworkers were amazed, astounded and envious that I would ride when it was so cold. My core was warm; my face, fingers & toes got numb... not OMG FROSTBITE! numb, but they were pretty cold. As soon as I hit the warmth of the building, though, things came back quick.

This was with a t-shirt, long-sleeve thermal and a hoodie on top (with the hood pulled up, under the helmet), and jeans on the bottom. I had fredtastic mechanics' gloves from Harbor Freight on my hands and sneakers on my feet. Even though my extremities got cold, I would say the clothing was just right for the ride.

vtjim 11-21-08 01:07 PM

No ride for me. Walked 2.5 miles to the bus. Roughly 1.5 miles/20 minutes is on the same MUP I ride on. Didn't see a soul on it. Maybe it was the 20 degrees and/or the wind. Usually I see at least a couple of cyclists while I'm walking.

Doohickie 11-21-08 01:43 PM

Like I said... coldest ride of the season today. I rarely see other commuters, but I did encounter one this morning. I think I've seen him once before. Based on the direction he was going, I'm guessing he's a teacher at the high school.

I left this morning expecting to see all kinds of snow on the ground with 21degree temps like the weather guys said. It wasn't nothing. The temp was at 26f with a hefty 12mph NW wind. Not bad. The aftn temp was at 31f or so with that NW wind pushing me home. Sweet. Rode a bit on the OBP so folks on 315 could see me out there. Finally had some flurries on the way home. I like ridin' when its snowing.

scoatw 11-21-08 04:03 PM

For you folks out there ridin' in 20 degree weather. Want ridin' pants that you don't have to layer in. Totally windproof and cold proof. Look at SportHll.com. Their XC 3SP pants are the ultimate winter riding pant, good down to about 20f. The Infuzion II's are on sale at Amazon for $45 (retail for $85), those are good to about 25f or so depending on your tolerance. Do like I do and google search for the cheapest price. They're not cheap, but worth every penny.

miedmonds 11-21-08 04:21 PM

12 degrees with a modest NW wind (across my path). Glasses fogged up frequently, and sometimes froze that way. Has anyone come up with a way to prevent this? I tried adjusting my scarf various ways but without much success. if I'm going to rise in the cold, I'd prefer being able to see. :-)

I tried the dishsoap trick. But at those temps its hard to prevent fogging. This year I may try out a dual lens goggle.

late to report...
With accrued lack of sleep due to shift change, I misjudged my clothing needs this AM. Too hot on top, too cool waist down. Ended up with cold knees, numb toes, sweat streaming down my face and a soaked, clammy baselayer. Lost enought weight that the layer is now baggy and gross wehn soaked. Time to find another tight skin base....

Commute home will be colder but no clammy! A little Tylenol PM and in bed by 7 to FORCE my body into shift change!

I agree. It is amazing material. I wish I could wear mine all day.

As for my ride today, 15 degrees above normal. Can't complain.
