I rode the full commute on Tuesday and Wednesday. Cold, slow, and tiring, blah.

I wasn't planning on riding today, but I did ride part of the commute due to the wonderful weather. It was in the 40s this morning, and 50s on the way home. Saw four other bike commuters. A really great ride.

Best ride in two months. When I went in in the morning it was 28 degrees out and felt more like 45 because it has been in the teens for the past week. My legs felt strong and I made the commute in one of my best times. On the way home I was feeling really good and it was around 43. Again I made one of my best times and was able to pass a lot of cars.

It was an interesting change since yesterday it was around 20 degrees going in and I felt weak. It was the first time that I had to take multiple walk breaks since a couple of months ago. So it went from one of my worst commutes to one of my best.

Got hit going through an intersection about 1/3 of the way to work. Was going around a traffic circle, guy about 1/2 block away, get halfway around traffic circle, realize guy isn't slowing down, get on the brakes and hug the circle as tight as possible, guy's front driver-side fender/wheel hits my right foot/pedal/rear wheel.

Guy rolls down window and says "oh, are you okay?"
I say "you've got to be ****ing kidding me!"
He says "oh, there was black ice, I couldn't slow down!" even though he didn't skid at all, didn't scrub any noticeable amount of speed, and the street he was on was in the sun, while the one I was on was in the shade and was ice-free.
I'm all adrenaline-ed up and stupidly say I think I'm fine and start checking for damage and he promptly drives off. Didn't manage to get his license plate number. I get going, and about a block later get calmed down and realize my rear wheel is toast and my ankle is starting to hurt. The ankle is fine now, and I'll get the new rim for cheap and had been meaning to build up a wheel anyway, but the jerk wrecked the rear wheel I'd had ever since it came on my first serious mountain bike about 12 years ago. Slowly pedaled the rest of the way in to work with the rear brake unhooked, but now I need to find some bus fare to get home, I guess.

....

Dang sorry that sucks. Hopefully your ankle is nothing too serious.

Todays commute to school was great. It was 33-40 degrees and raining moderately all day long. No work today so I turned my typical 20 mile round trip into 50 miles today...I dont know why but riding in the rain is fun (as long as you have plastic bags on hand :thumb: ). It was also very cool to run into another commuter near school today...asked him how the ride was, to which he replied, "The BEST."

Also tried out my new Ortlieb Back roller panniers today...WOW. I had so much room to spare it was ridiculous. Water was not an issue and I am very pleased and now feel justified for spending so much on them.

It's been nice here in San Diego: we had two weeks of nearly 80's temps. Finally rained this friday.

MIKEnDC 01-26-09 05:54 AM

25F/-4C with not enough headwind to write BF about... :D

Snow in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow--might have to swap out for studs this evening. Then again, we haven't seen any yet this season. Promises, promises...

Doohickie 01-26-09 07:52 AM

Mid 40s and misty. Very pleasant ride in t-shirt, long sleeve shirt & windbreaker, with headband over my ears and light gloves on my hands.

If I'm lucky, the real rain will hold off until after I get home this afternoon.

Ice storm predicted for Wednesday. Winter storm watch for tomorrow, but the temps are supposed to be above freezing all day. I haven't figured that out yet.

Tude 01-26-09 08:30 AM

C-C-C-Cold! 7F this morning --- but no wind - roads were decently clean - even the side streets - actually had a good ride in!

tarwheel 01-26-09 08:41 AM

The temperature was hovering at the freezing mark this morning with cloudy skies and a few showers in the area. It wasn't raining at my house and the radar didn't show anything on my route, so I made a run for it. Made it to work with no problems, and it's supposed to clear off later if the forecasters are right (which isn't often).

My regular commuter bike has been decommissioned for the time being. I am turning it into a single speed and stripped off most of the components and took it to the mechanic for the conversion over the weekend. I've ordered a new touring frame for my commuter bike, which should arrive in the next few weeks, and will commute on my old Merckx Corsa in the meantime. It was fun commuting on the Corsa, although it looks more like a Freddy Merckx with my lights, fenders, and large seatbag attached.

jyossarian 01-26-09 09:23 AM

It was 20F when I rode in. I'm ready for summer.

T-Hussy 01-26-09 10:11 AM

Pretty cold in Denver today, it was 10 when I rode in. Only saw one other biker on my commute.

HardyWeinberg 01-26-09 10:26 AM

24F, crystal clear. I gave my hat to my 7 yr old, so my ears were pretty numb when I left his school, but by the time I was halfway to work the circulation had kicked in pretty well so all was good.

Itsjustb 01-26-09 10:27 AM

I'm happy to report I survived last week's bad weather. I worked from home on Tuesday and Wednesday because of the snow, but commuted the other 3 days. Thursday wasn't TOO bad, except for a patch of ice in the shade under a train trestle. Making my way through it at about 22 mph on thin tires with cars next to me doing 60+ got my pulse racing for a second, but I made it through OK.

Uneventful rides otherwise.

LP560 01-26-09 10:43 AM

horrible

daredevil 01-26-09 10:59 AM

-5 F. My man thing got cold! Otherwise, fine. I did break out the chemical warmers for the toes.

pgoat 01-26-09 12:32 PM

34F and clear. Bit of mist down by the river. Gorgeous.

I had a run in with the first Suicide Squirell of 2009: Lucky for us both that he missed my wheels and ran right under my bottom bracket. I could feel his tail on my foot. We both survived.

Doohickie 01-26-09 02:56 PM

I think I've met that same squirrel. ;)

Almost Got Killed Today ... !!!

I almost got smashed and maybe killed today! I was riding through downtown, in the right lane, to the right as far as I could ride safely, and several cars came to close to me when they passed, but one car nearly hit me, and so I almost crashed into the parked cars.

I even had on my bright orange road construction vest, which is very visible. Visibility was good, sun was out, and I was actually keeping up with the traffic!

So, from now on I'm taking up the entire lane when I ride ... !!! Drivers are so rude here and dangerous!

dygituljunky 01-26-09 05:24 PM

50(F)ish, dry. Nice.

A can lid fell off of a recycling truck and the next car flung it directly at my bike frame like it was a sharp-edged metal Frisbee. Coulda hurt bad if it hit my leg.

buzzman 01-26-09 09:18 PM

8〫F on the way home tonight and it felt oddly warm- no wind for a change.

took the bike path in this morning- hadn't ridden on it in 2 weeks but thought I'd check it out. It was plowed and "ridable" but basically like riding a mountain bike on rough single track in a lot of sections. My speed dropped at times to about 4-5mph. Other sections were quite nice but not consistent enough to make it worthwhile.

Back to the streets route tonight, which was fine.

unterhausen 01-26-09 10:13 PM

I've adopted a new route that incorporates a couple of rural roads. I've been riding it during the day,but I was concerned about the traffic at night. I tried it last night, and then rode it again tonight. Seems to be ok. It's twice as long as the bike path I can't take right now, but I think it's faster because there are only two stops instead of 12.

This avoids a 2 block stretch on 4 lane road with a 40mph speed limit that has a lot of speeding on it. That was causing me a lot of stress even though the motorists have seemed ok on there for the most part. For most of the year, there is a bike path along the road that I ride on, but it's impassable now.

The new route has the advantage that it is photogenic. I'm thinking about taking the camera soon.

Argon 01-26-09 11:00 PM

My first day commuting home from work. I took a few wrong turns to say the least. Route I should have taken = 8.1 miles. Actual route=15.4 miles!! What an idiot.

I mapped my route on google (backwards: from home to work).

Nasty. Glad you're OK.

My commute was very wet. My glasses fogged up every time I stopped and my shoes are full of water :(. I've stuffed them with newspaper to soak some of it up. Any more tips?

Change out the paper after a few hours if they're really wet.

28-30F/-2 to -1C with snow. Just started as I was setting out, and was collecting nicely along the way in. Actually started as a kind of sleet. As I was walking around the building here at work I noticed that it was a kind of crystaline sort of stuff--very slick. Didn't realize it 'til I started walking on it.

Put studs on last night, and didn't really need them this morning (though I may have needed them more than I know). I do have a feeling I'll need them this afternoon, though...
