38/34 15 mi r/t to this month's 7:30 deacon meeting.
I've been riding out to church in 18 - 20 degree weather, figuring if I could get back into cycling in the dead of winter, then I'd be well on my way to making the lifestyle change permanent.... and spring is here as far as I'm concerned! I feel like I've made it. The boat anchor hybrid stayed home and I took the panasonic out for only the second or third time since moving out here to Connecticut. The drivetrain is in need of some professional attention, but it still felt great to be on a road bike again. I left 15 minutes late as the bike had no headlight or rear reflector when I grabbed it in the garage. I wanted to put the toe clips I'd bought on it too before leaving, but couldn't find the straps. And sorry to the purists, but I think I'd like to report on my nocturnal runs into church for meetings and choir rehearsals. I think it fits under the rubric of commuting, but I do draw the line at errands/shopping... I bought a cheap bike rack for my church for $85 after lobbying the associate pastor to get one installed. I'll see if I can get a bunch of people to ride in for Earth Day. |

Most of the snow on the streets is gone now due to the thaw we had over the weekend. The roads are nice and wide. It's beautiful. I was actually able to filter on the right in places I haven't been able to for many weeks!
But I chose to try the bike path on the way home. It was wild- the best test yet of my studded tires- I rode on ice that was phenomenal from everything melting and refreezing. Some of it was still water underneath and I would break through like an ice-cutter. I couldn't believe I remained upright through some of it. It was fun but would have sucked if I had to ride into work like that and hadn't left enough time. I'm sticking to the streets till this stuff is really gone. |
I was so cold today I had to wear my full length bibs, long sleeve base shirt, and a hat under my helmet. I think it was 50*F.

^^^^^ :D
35F/plus a couple C, I guess. Sleeveless microfiber T under my rain jacket, no helmet liner and gloves w/o liners for the first AM in quite a while. It's all in what you get used to, I reckon... |
Low 40's with a tailwind made for a nice ride in. Should be a nice one this afternoon, I heard mid 60's. Yesterday I discovered that my big chainring is more worn than I thought. Even with lube I've been getting a lot of squeeking and (I think) increased pedal resistance, possibly explaining my recent difficulty maintaining decent speed. I tried riding in the small ring but the chain was making some weird sounds and I couldn't get into a big enough gear without pulling the chain againts the big ring. So, I rode in on the big ring at about 16 mph. I usually replace the drivetrain in early Spring but may order parts today. Hopefully that will get my speed back to where it should be and make riding a little more enjoyable again.

Our springtime in February continues, with the high expected to reach near 70 today and the rest of the week. The rain that had been forecasted is now looking doubtful, so I might have a full workweek of nice weather for the first time in 2009. Despite the nice weather, my legs are mush from piling up a lot of miles over the past week. Took it easy again this morning, and hoping my legs will better this afternoon.

Nice DC ride. Like MikeinDC, just a dri-fit type shirt under the windbreaker. Really light (runners) gloves, and a light knit hat under the helmet.
Got on the elevator with my folder, and a woman looked at me, looked at my bike, looked again at me and said "How'd you do that?!?" |
Another DC commuter here... I did not want to get off my bike once I got here. It's so nice outside, and I can't wait for this afternoon.
|
Started pouring ten minutes after I got here, and it is supposed to stop a couple of hours before I go home. Sometimes you know it is going to be a good day
|
First commute of the year w/o a jacket. 17 mph headwinds, but I was so aerodynamic I hardly noticed.
|
Great ride in today. mild and humid (which I don't mind), headwind, but that's ok since the ride in is mostly downhill. Hopefully that means I'll get a tailwind for the uphill ride home :)
Even had some lady about to turn left at one of my many 4 way stops flash her lights for me to go first so I didn't even have to toe down. I love it when people are nice :) Hope your ride was as nice as mine this morning. |
68F this morning. Got smoked by a roadie today and had to slap an SUV going into the bike lane while it tried to avoid a speed bump. Another commute in So. Florida...
|
Dirty wet roads, 52 degrees F, still a few ice piles left from the plows, and my newly built commuter bike. It was great.
|
The most dangerous part of my commute yet again is the parking garage. Gotta love people driving in the wrong side whipping around corners at 15+ mph while I try to get to my bike spot.
Otherwise it went well. My legs are a little beat up and the wind was a bit much but it wasn't too bad even with the high humidity. |
Freezing rain overnight, so a few icy spots.
I went down twice (doubling my total of spills for the winter), and had one spectacular save where I managed to get my foot down after doing a 180 on the ice. The first time was trying to turn left from a stop sign on a deserted residential street, the second was a wipe-out at cruising speed (probably 25 km/hr) on a local MUP. I slid a LONG way when I hit the deck on that one. Note that this was with my Schwalbe Snow Stud tires on the bike. I believe the tire pressure may have been too high for the studs to actually bite into the road--the studs are pretty far from the center of the tire. |
Bright blue skies this morning with a cold north wind. Now the clouds are moving in. Supposed to have rain tonight so I road the fendered bike.
|
I wimped out on my last two work days last week because the temperature, wind chill, and complete lack of humidity were too much for the gear I have.
It was absolutely beautiful weather on the way in yesterday evening and this evening; it was a bit chilly, but not terrible, on the way home this morning. I had drive train issues on the way in tonight and ended up with Teflon & Road Grime-infused chain grease all over my face and commuter yellow jersey. I was subjected to an attempted right-hook but I managed to swing out behind the driver and yell, "Trying to kill me?!" into her window as I passed her. |
A beautiful day today albeit a bit windy. It was a cross wind to and from work but it was very nice! I saw a ton of bikers out today and yesterday as Chicago got unseasonably warm. Looking like a really crappy day tomorrow though.

I'm going to start carrying a billy club :twitchy:
Yesterday some idiot that works for "VOLVO RENTALS" IN ACWORTH GA. Has no where to go blocks the right turn lane, bike lane and part of another lane with a big roll back. I weave past him and scream THANKS! sarcastically as I pass. so he thinks when he caches up its cute to weave into the bike lane and blow the horn. Dumbass shouldn't pull that crap with the name of the company on the side of his truck. Stupidity like that is why driving a roll back will be the best job that moron ever has. Today some bleach blond jumping traffic in the right turn only lane about got me coming back arross the turn lane. :notamused: Other than that the weather has been great and the rest of the ride enjoyable. |
fast ride in this morning. fast ride home.
|
Great ride today. Unusually warm weather here (high was 70F today in St Louis). This was my first bike commute since moving here last fall. It felt great to ride in to work again, however my route needs some work! I've got my improved route worked out and can't wait to try it on Thursday. Also, it's going to take a lot more riding to get used to having hills around! I'm so used to the flat sandbar that is long island.

Sweet! Right around 50F/+10C with negligable breezes (though that is supposed to change radically by this evening): pavement just damp from an overnight shower, eye-wateringly fast descent through the old neighborhood, the usual scattered but well-behaved motorists out on the arterial, and just slightly chilly on the shins and fingertips (both bare in the cool morning air).
Man! I'd love to bottle this morning up and break it back out again in August... |
Dark outside. Weather is cool and pleasant. I rode the LaJolla street cruiser today. A slow but comfy ride. As I neared the office, my seat starts to slide. I'll go to the LBS and get the quick-release taken off and get something tighter put on. Nothing to report.
