Finally a break in the Hot'tlanta Freezer weather. only 24 this morning and almost no wind. nice ride! though this afternoon is going to be crazy hot. 58 deg? this is insane. been in the teens all week in the morning and low 30-40 afternoon. did not ride weds/thurs due to cold near 0 wind chills in the morning. can't wait for the commute this afternoon. like someone posted earlier feels so good to get out and ride.

Sowly warming up. Was 10f this morning shooting for mid 30's this afternoon and 40's and 50's for the weekend. As it warms up, I'm seeing more joggers on the road. When I say seeing I mean seeing at the last possible second. The guy I almost nailed last night was in black tights, black jacket, black hat and yes it was faily dark out.

Finally warming up! about 35f this morning required only a jacket and ear-muff-things, and 60f for lunch! :) Can't wait to leave work & ride the 20mph tail wind home!!!

Commute was only 8.4 miles yesterday. Nearly got hit when I was crossing the crosswalk (broad daylight). A car didn't stop, and as they started to turn, they almost hit me! And I had my bright reflective vest on. Lucky I was was able to stop quickly. One good thing about my Townie is that the brakes are very good!
Later in the day I went shopping and loaded my Townie with $133.00 of groceries! That's the most I've ever carried before. |
I just got home from my first commute to my new job. It was a total of 42 miles round trip. I'm using my Trek 820 with slick tires. I think that I need to get a road bike for this stuff. The best thing is that the weather here in northern VA right now is like 55 degrees. So it was a fantastic ride. Looking forward to doing it again.

Forgot to post Friday's commute. I ride a folding bike with a 3-speed internal hub drivetrain - there's no deraileur or tensioner. On the way out of work, my chain kept slipping off. I made it to the train station, coasting downhill most of the way. I ended up calling a cab at the other end of the trip.

$156/67 Pounds of Groceries
Commute today was 13.1 miles. No problems today. Weather has been warming up in the upper 60s, and a couple days in the lower 70s. Nights are still brisk, must be in the middle-upper 30s.
Average speed today was 10.8 miles. On the trip into town, I made better time, about 12mph average speed. Coming back home there was a bit of a head wind, which got stronger as I got closer to home. My knees could really feel the heavy load, so I had to take it easy hauling the load of food home! Carried $156/67 pounds of groceries on the way home. This is the most I've ever carried before! I think I just about maxed out the load. http://www.light-after-darkness.org/...&pictureid=221 |
The nut holding the fender to the fork came off on one side and made a really good racket at 0615 this morning. I undid my twofish handlebar LED flashlight holder and looked for the nut without results cussing the whole time. I walked the Cross Check back to my abode and found a suitable sub for my missing nut and headed out 20 minutes late. Of course I tightened everything else I could.

Beautiful full moon in a nearly clear sky--could've ridden without a headlight (though I wouldn't dare to do without taillights :D ).
30F/-1C with a little headwind. After a warm (+15C or so) weekend, I underdressed a little--and I optimistically packed along fingerless gloves for the afternoon trip. The whole week is supposed to be pretty nice... |
First commute of the year for me - compliments of unseasonably warm weather. Nice bright full moon guiding my way too. Very nice!! Fingers and toes were a bit chilly to begin, but warmed up after ~ 10 minutes. I was glad to see that my battery still had enough juice to light my way for 45 minutes ( I threw it on the charger for a few hours last night). Should have a light head wind on the way home, but temps in mid 60'sF. Hoping to ride in tomorrow too.

Nice job Big Ron!
My commute was fabulous today. It started with just making the train. I heard it pulling into the platform, so I tucked my folder under my arm and ran and just made it. That set the tone for an expeditious ride in bueatiful weather. And, I actually dressed just about right. It's a little warmer the past few days here in DC, but still cold in the mornings. I went with really light pants and the lightest gloves, and that was a good move. Cheers all! |
Nice ride. Full moon, temps around 33F. It was nice not to have so many layers. Should be close to 60F today, should have brought fingerless gloves for the ride home. Looks like it's going to be a good week.

We had springlike weather over the weekend and it's carried over. I rode my first metric of 2009 yesterday, so my legs were very tired this morning. That made for a slow ride, but I just took it easy, helped by catching every red light on my route.
A guy in a pickup truck rolled down his window next to me at a stop sign and I braced myself for him telling me to get off the road. Instead, he said: "Your head light is almost as bright as a car light. Good going!" That was funny. BTW, my headlight is a little Fenix flashlight. |
Nice fresh ride. Only -6 which was alittle disapointing, i wanted to try out the new mitts i bought. Much too warm for those.
|
With morning temps in the 30's, I was able to shed a layer of clothing (down to 3 layers on the top and just some windbreaker pants over the shorts). Makes getting ready in the morning a bit less of a hassle. Nothing out of the ordinary to report other than I saw another biker out there.
|
First commute of 2009 this morning. Roads were clear of snow but were covered in sand and grit, especially on the shoulders. Potholes that seemed unavoidable in my car were easily navigated past making the ride not nearly as rough as I thought it would be. Temp was right at about freezing with a bit of a headwind throughout the ride. Having not ridden for about 2.5 months, I was surprised that I was as comfortable as I was on the bike. Surprisingly for February, no issues with cars... I think motorists are more used to seeing bikes on the road around here starting in April.
I need to work on my conditioning again... Hope I can see the potholes on the ride home... |
Most of the snow on the streets is gone now due to the thaw we had over the weekend. The roads are nice and wide. It's beautiful. I was actually able to filter on the right in places I haven't been able to for many weeks!
|
Started at 45f this morning, supposed to get up to upper 50's or 60's. We're also supposed to get a decent amount of rain later!:D Other than the wind (30mph with gusts of 45mph), it should be a nice day here in northwest Missouri.

Yesterday, 18F when I left for work & 55F 7 hours later riding home
|
blinding sun, thick frost. 30F I'm guessing.
|
Back on after a month off due to back injury and weather.
It was so nice to ride again!! I found my legs were really good (I had been doing the trainer while the back recovered) but I need to get my lung capacity back up. On the hills the legs were pumping fine, no burn, but I was a sucking air more then when I'm in form. |
With a forecast of sunny and near 50F for today, I could not bear the thought of riding the studded winter bike to work this morning...so I took the Fuji. I knew I'd run into some iced-up snow melt, but also knew I could avoid them easily enough. What I didn't expect was the fog that laid down a nice thin coat of ice over large portions of what was dry pavement earlier. Made it to work without incident, but there were a few sphincter-tightening moments along the way. :o
|
Nice. We're in between two systems so it's been breezy with big fluffy clouds and bright sun, but no rain. Probably tonight. It's a holiday for my office so I was able to sleep in late and have breakfast with the kids before coming to the office.
|
rode up into town today, then realized how out of shape i really was. wasn't an issue with enough power, or getting winded, since i've been riding a trainer and rollers lately, but my back and arms really felt good and sore from the bumps in the road and using my whole body when i got out of the saddle.
It was a pleasant 39F here today, and now to rest up for the roller races tonight!!! woot! .. |
Woke up to snow/ice so took the bus. Glad I did because near my home it was difficult walking in some places, some black ice/slush that was invisible until you stepped on it. Main roads were ok, but my problem was getting to those main roads. Near where I work, it was just a solid sheet of black ice for blocks and blocks. Tomorrow may bring more snow/ice so may have to bus again.
