Ride home was mostly uneventful. There are quite a few big storms brewing around greater Denver, so I was watching out all the windows of the office to pick my moment. Must have done ok - I left just after a tornado warning finished, had a long ride home into a stupidly strong gusting headwind, and got home just as a big downpour hit my neighborhood. |
After a very protracted spring, We finally hit a hot day, 98F/36C, so I loafed on the way home. Well, as much as I could given the gusts of wind I was riding into, the same wind that will bring thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Oh well, 3 days of sun is pretty good. My big complaint is that they are going to turn one of my commute intersections into a rotary (roundabout, traffic circle). This is on one of the few marked bike routes in our town, and I am more than a little apprehensive about this. Massachusetts has had the highest car insurance claim rate in the US for something like 20 years, and much of it is due to the popularity of rotarys here, and our notorious driving habits.

55F& cloudy when I left at 6AM but 5 minutes into my ride I received warm rain in big, fat droplets. Got a bit wet on the way in as I had made an optimistic weather assessment & left my rain gear in the garage. The rain was beginning to ease up when I reached work and a half hour later when the next bike commuter arrived, he complained of being damp & sweaty from wearing rain gear when it wasn't necessary! You can't win I guess. I got home in time to watch the Reagan procession & the ceremony in the Rotunda. Very moving.

Yet another piece of stupidity from our notorious Gold Coast drivers today. This clown stopped on a green light and refused to move until the thing changed, then proceeded through on the red light. I'm still trying to figure out how a multi-car pile up didn't result. I'm still trying to figure out which is worse -- this incident or the fact that it didn't surprise me.

Oh yeah, strangely quiet ride home from work this evening. Temperature was around 20 C for most of it. For some reason there was in increased police presence in Surfers Paradise, so maybe that explains it. Maybe they should do it every night.
My 300th post in this thread! Ra! |
A crappy week for commuting. Rode on Monday but then had to drive to work on Tuesday (found out later that it was unnecassary), drive\Metro on Wednesday (suddenly reminded of how much I hate the Metro), then woke up to a flat rr tire this morning with no time to change it-Metro again. I'm really hoping that I can get it together for tomorrow-especially with the anticipated road closures/traffic problems during Reagan's State funeral. The only upside of this week is that it's given my right knee some time to rest after re-aggrevating my tendonitis.

Lets see, rain, flat rear tire, rain, forgot my lunch and rain. Yep that sums up my morning commute.
At least the humidity wasn't as bad as they days before. |
Overcast, 57F/14C, 10mph wind. But really not that bad. Tried to take it a bit slower today because I didn't want to work up too much of a sweat. Was partially successful.

I had a great ride in, you heard the the weather from prabbit, I took my winter bike for a change. Man, I like this route to South Minneapolis office (one of four that I work at), it's my favorite of all of them... so far. No rain but it looks threatening.
|
No commute today: I have to drive out to Granite Bay for a graduation ceremony after work. I'm sure I'll just love sitting in traffic on I-80 out to Placer Co. sprawlville.
Plus, my buddy canceled our training session this morning. Plus plus, our receptionist brought in donuts this morning. I should just go to the tailor and have my pants let out. Blah. |
Strong steady headwind today, with even stronger gusts. Add in a persistent drizzle to boot. Beats driving, but I was pretty happy to get to work  Had to do an odd detour across the road in the seemingly eternal construction site. They actually paved a path for this detour so methinks it will persist.
re: Humidity Humidity measures the moisture content of the air. Rain falls through the air, so the humidity can be fairly low while it is raining. Here in the Pacific Northwest, though it rains a lot, we have relatively low humidity. Thus some people refer to it as a "dry rain" for that reason. |
Rain, rain, rain.

Me to! 53F, windy & rain at 6AM but the rain soon stopped & we just had heavy clouds & wind for the remainder of the day. Monday evening, I serviced & polished up 2 of my dry weather only bikes (no fenders). Now all I need is some sunny weather.

Broke a couple of spokes on the way home last night. My wife crawled out of bed to come pick me up at around midnight. She didn't realize that the "in sickness and in health" applies to my bike, too.
|
Cold 43 degrees, feels like winter's back, I had to break out the shoe covers and jacket this morning. Otherwise it was a great clear, bright morning, traffic was on the heavy side but moving along.
|
Decent ride home yesterday. Weather was not to bad and the wind was light. Traffic was a little heavy in some spots.
|
Did something different today - shuttled my road bike to the park and ride and rode in from there. This route is about 14 miles and has no hills. It was a bunch of fun to ride in faster on a red bike. The weather was cooler, temps in the mid 50's.
I ran into my neigbor in the parking lot who rides this route 3-4 times a week. He's hardcore, but he stuck with me the first mile as we warmed up before he shot off. |
Things have been quite pleasant, if uneventful for the last month or so. This week, summer has finally hit -- high remperatures (86 F / 30 C) and near 100% humidity.
The Reagan funeral has had little effect on road traffic, although there have been hordes of people on the Metro. Even though the government was closed today, road traffic was normal on my route. Paul |
In a word,
RAIN Starting to get used to being wet and riding in the rain. Temeratures for the morning commutes have been in the low to mid 40s. One place I ride past has the smell of rotting flesh. I think a deer got hit and is just over the edge of the river bank out of sight. Sure stinks. |
