Pleasant 15 degrees C this morning on another "winter" commute. Back among the crazies of the Gold Coast after a much needed weekend away. Nothing much changes around here in that respect. Interesting to hear another rider tell me what a wonderful effort his 94km was yesterday. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I did 106km with a full touring load yesterday, which followed on from the 106km (and 1,380 metres of climbing, mostly on corrugated dirt roads) from the day before.

EDIT: Hey, I got post #5,000 in this thread! Ra!

By my computer it appears you are 5001. We'll have to wait for 10,000, I guess. :D

Poor Chris, foiled again!

Jealous. Light at 4:15 am...A summer benefit of living in the far north..Here it gets light about 5:15 AM...About 32 degrees north..I ride to work at about 3 PM for evening shift. So all year I have light..
Was a great ride. Mid' 70's...Gusty winds to cool you off...Great sun.. Felt so good and I did well enough speed wise, I added about 4 extra miles to my 26 mile commute.
If it got that light that early here , I might be inclined to ride in while on day shift.
Oh yes...I keep track of my mileage daily in my bike log...On the ride home, I will top 1,000 miles just commuting alone for the year...

I had to hand my two boys, 8 and 9, over to my wife in the salt mines( we work in parellel shafts) so I sugested to the monsters, that we bike the 6.5 miles there. They squacked, and I was about to drive instead of bike, but then I got a great idea. I sugested that they scooter to a bus, on which I could load my bike on the front, we stop for rootbeer, then bike/scooter a few more miles to my workplace.

They thought that this was a great idea. We did it and had fun the whole way. They zipped at an average 9 miles per hour, almost as fast as they bike! They did 4.25 miles under their own steam, and got a lot more exercise than they would have, if they had cycled. To make up for my abreviated ride in the afternoon, I took a long way home, when I came back, tonight. I look forward to doing this again.

Oh alright, reply #5,000 then! Picky, picky. :p

Oh yeah, 19 degrees C this evening, and if anything it's warmed up since I got home. Another surprisingly quiet commute through Surfers. Dusting off the old bike tomorrow as I need to replace the chainring I bent over the weekend.

68 degrees, very humid this morning I rode under heavy overcast, gusting wind and traffic seemed to be heavy. All in all, the start of another great day.

ridealot 06-15-04 05:33 AM

70F this morning coming in and very humid and sticky. The crank feels a little funny when I peddle, there seems to be a little play in it. Something for me to do when I get home. Check the crank and BB.

Supposed to get a little rain this afternoon.

Ohhhh, I see.

Second morning in a row, I looked out the window and witness calm. Jump out of bed, throw my riding gear on, go outside, and dark skies, thunder and lightning greet me :( , with rain to follow.

Although my RAGBRAI training is technically not commuting, it is almost every morning for 35-60 miles.
The bad thing about being retired, is there is no where to commute to. Or is it, every ride is a commute for me, since where ever I'm going is part of my retirement job? :D Yeah, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

Um, well. I was actually attempting a play on words. :o
Like in the comic books from my youth.

The commute this morning was quite nice. Bright sun which made the 40F temp. seem warmer. Winds were west at around 15-20MPH. Still having to wear tights and a jacket on the morning ride. I saw 3 other folks on bikes this morning on my way into town. Thats a first. Normally the 2 ladies that are walking their huge dogs and the cagers are the only "intelligent" life I see in the mornings.

The ride in this morning was rather inspiring… 10:00am before I needed my first cup of coffee. 75F with a gentle breeze. :) I was press for time this morning and did not take the time to stretch. How many of you out there take the time to stretch before and after your ride?

I love biker terminology. ;)

Stubacca 06-15-04 10:33 AM

Nice ride in today. Great temps and just a slight cooling breeze. I've just had four days off the bike for various reasons, and today the legs felt great. I was hitting the hills at least 2 gears higher than I was last week! Amazing what a bit of rest for tired legs will do... :D

Patrick A 06-15-04 10:56 AM

Man, it was about 75 and humid at about 6:30 this morning when I started out under threatening skies. I got to within a mile of the office and it started pretty good...within a half mile it started hailing! Small nuggets, and it didn't last too long, but I had just given my legs a fresh shave last night so they stung a bit! Pretty soaked, but nothing a good shower didn't fix. :)

caloso 06-15-04 12:31 PM

Last night I was heading for home, rolling out of the garage and coming to a trackstand on L Street waiting for a gap in traffic. I realized that to most people I probably look like a total dork (and a total Fred to roadie snobs): dress shirt and pants with reflective cuff-bands, loosened tie, helmet, bike shoes. A huge, dinged-up 4X4 rolled by and there was a teenage girl in the passenger seat. She leaned out the window and I expected her to say something rude or throw a soda can. Instead, she smiled, gave me a friendly wave, and said, "Hey! I like your bike!"

Now that made my day.

Hmmmm... I've been commuting and touring now for twenty three years, I really should start doing that. I suppose it's just a matter of getting into the habit.

Kodama 06-15-04 01:59 PM

Sweet day today, mostly blue with scattered big fluffy clouds. Getting warmer to, with 70s and 80s in the future. Skipped the MUP today and took to the streets for the 1st half then back to the MUP at the construction section. They routed us onto the road again as they were working in the underpass. Nice ride in today and I picked up Simpson's Season 4 (my 2nd fav season) from apt. office on the way in. Woo Hoo!

I worry about it in the morning… sometimes. I jump out of bed and I'm on the bike in 15 minutes. Maybe it would cut down on some of the soreness.

Moistfly 06-15-04 03:07 PM

Today was my first day ever commuting by bike and it was fantastic. Clear skies, cool early morning temps and really polite drivers. And on top of that it only took about 10 extra minutes to get to work (granted the majority of the ride is slightly downhill) ... but what a fantastic way to start the day.

Zin 06-15-04 05:07 PM

Conrats Moistfly on your first commute! A word of caution. Bicycle commuting can become adictive. :D

Nice ride home. Temp around 60F with SSW winds around 15MPH. Skies were full broken clouds that look to be trying to form into thunderheads.

ollo_ollo 06-15-04 05:35 PM

45F & sunny @ 6AM then 68F @ lunchtime & up to 72F this afternoon. Nothing but clear skyall around.

Panoramic 06-15-04 07:52 PM

Sweaty, hot, fun (I took some risky manouvers around cars), a bit disatisfying when I couldn't go full speed down the hill, and short (I sprinted). But as someone else said, a bad day on the bike beats a good day at work.

Moistfly 06-15-04 08:29 PM

So at work today I realized that they actually have a private shower stall in one of the bathrooms .... I'm sure everyone would think i'm wierd if I started using it ... but they'd probably think worse if I stunk every day ... and I don't have enough patience in my bones to take it slow to work. This is great, I only wish I could have been introduced to it sooner.

Alphie 06-15-04 11:23 PM

3-12 shift today. Warm and overcast when I rode in, thunderstorm arrived just after I walked in to work. Was a little concerned this afternoon about the ride home; strong lightning was prevalent. So much so, that my gf called to ask me not to bike home if the weather stayed rough. Nice and calm by 12 midnight though. Had a lovely cool ride home.

In the Netherlands..I saw this as common place...Sacramento gets pretty hot..BIkes do not come with A/C to keep you cool and your clothes sweet smelling...Watch out for that tie..Not so long it could get caught up in the spokes.
