Windy as hell. I found myself actually leaning into the wind just to keep upright. Thought I wanted to die.

Great ride. I must confess I ran a red light and got a "That's a goddamned red light!" from a motorist. I was at an intersection where I am not normally, and when cross-traffic got their red light, I took off, thinking we got a green, but the folks opposite got a protected green instead. By the time they were moving I was mostly through the intersection. Lesson learned there. Love the weather right now; upper 40's (f). No jacket required!

50F, balmy, nice tailwind-what more could you ask for? I was dressed more appropriatly than yesterday with: shorts, 2 shirts, full gloves, skull cap-I can shed alot of that stuff for this afternoon's ride home when temps should be around 60F. I zipped along at about 21 mph for most of the ride and made up for a late start. Had to stop yesterday to check my rr. brakes. I think one of the pads picked something up and it was grinding againts the rim. I checked, saw nothing, and adjusted them while I was at it-the commute seems to be a good proving grounds where I can make most of my adjustments/tweaks. After finding nothing I figured it either fell out or, it was just that the pads had glazed over (I like to sand them with course sandpaper when this happens). They were quiet today so...... Should be a sweet ride home. Can't wait to put road tires back on the bike, probably mid-March when we don't have the possibility of snow. I'm going to try a 25 fr. / 28 rr. tire combination this Summer.

Great ride to work this morning with the temps around 50 F, the warmest morning we've had in a while. I rode despite the forecast calling for possible showers this afternoon because I couldn't pass up riding in such warm temps again, with afternoon high expected in mid-60s. It's also my first "5-bagger" of 2009 as I've ridden to work every day this week. I've still got new bike fever and have thoroughly enjoyed commuting on my new Bob Jackson touring bike. I might get to try out the fenders this afternoon if the rains roll in earlier than expected. This is my first bike with full fenders, although I've used clip-on RaceBlades a lot in the past, and I'm hoping they will be a big improvement in the rain.

Too much headwind for just my second day back! Yikes.

rumrunn6 02-27-09 07:44 AM

I did it! I made it! AGHAGHAGHAGH 1st commute of the season and last one to this office

see you all on the flip side we're shutting down!

It is a beautiful morning in Philly. I hit almost every light as it went to green for most of Broad St. North to city hall. Best of all motorists were getting out of my way and waiting for me to pass, could have sworn I heard a chorus of angels.:thumb:

Doohickie 02-27-09 08:15 AM

Couldn't ride yesterday due to a problem with my son's car that I had to deal with. That put me late and I just drove.

This morning was warm, better than 60 degrees, and breezy but not so bad that it slowed me up. It will be cooler when I go home but the wind should be at my back so it will all balance out. It's very cloudy and I was wondering if I would get wet but there's only a 10% chance of rain. I made it in dry.

ItsJustMe 02-27-09 08:16 AM

49*F and a tailwind this morning, so possibly the nicest ride of the year so far. I put the SPD pedals back on (again) two days ago, I had to switch back to platforms last week so I could wear boots when it was about 4*F in the morning.

Heather H 02-27-09 08:25 AM

Great ride in today! 68 degrees and humid so I actually got to sweat a little. I had a headwind on the way in, but I think the wind is supposed to shift so I'll probably have a headwind on the uphill ride home too. It's going to get cold again tomorrow, ugh. I wish spring would hurry up and stay here!

Pig_Chaser 02-27-09 08:38 AM

Fast ride in this morning :D I topped up the air in my studded tires as road conditions have improved greatly since the dump of snow 2 days ago. -24C and i dressed the same as yesterday and i was way too hot when i got to work.

Standalone 02-27-09 09:56 AM

I returned home yesterday to find the car that I would have been driving was sitting with a flat! :) It's awesome that I don't even have to worry about fixing it until Saturday Morning. :)

I purchased a monthly pass for the train, so now I'm fully committed! Only $60 It cost me $18 just to do three days this week. The monthly is a great deal.

I skipped the fleece vest under the windbreaker today, and was mighty comfortable-- it was like 38F out. Lovely.

I'm really enjoying the walk part of the commute. I'm sure I'll tire of it somewhat, but I almost don't want a folder!

noglider 02-27-09 10:04 AM

I had a good, quick ride home last night. The morning commute was 30F, and the evening commute was 42F. I don't have adequate headlights, but I decided to be bold and go fast and hope not to hit any potholes. I was lucky. There was one pothole that I noticed a tiny fraction of a second before I hit it, and it was scary, but I managed to get out of the saddle in time, so no big deal.

I woke up pretty stiff this morning. Walking the dogs helped, and I stretched a bit once I got to work. (I drove to work today, according to my plan.)

Does anyone have a recommended set of stretching exercises? I never stretch enough after rides. And I don't even stretch one bit before rides, and I should.

I don't stretch before or {immediately} after rides to and from work, I rely on starting slow and gradually warming up by riding at a moderate pace until the legs are loose. I, however, do focus on stretching 3 x's a week in the evenings (something I have to resume on a regular basis). I find that the various ham/glute/quad/calf stretches we did as warmups for soccer/football practice are a good start. I also include some yoga stretches for my back/neck. While I don't think this is ideal, my busy schedule doesn't allow for much more. I think it's moderately effective in keeping my legs healthy and loose enough to get through week after week of commuting.

Y'all weren't kidding. My ride in (east) was calm as can be. But that wind you had is sure here now!

I just stepped outside the lobby here and the wind was whipping around the corner of the building at like 35-40. Right out of the west. I'm going to have a slow ride home... :/

caloso 02-27-09 01:05 PM

A gorgeous day. Break in the systems so I really ought to take advantage of it... I feel a long lunch coming.

floriderron 02-27-09 01:18 PM

20 mph head winds. And the funny thing is they are supposed to turn and be head winds going home also. Nice!

noteon 02-27-09 01:34 PM

Stupid wind.

made it home through 30 mph side gusts and wicked head winds
just keep pedaling just keep pedaling
was in the drops more than I expected
barely touched the vertical bar ends
these new shifters are so much better than my old friction shifters (10 spd bike)
not sure this bike is the best commuter of my 3
the frame could be bigger but it's a matter of effort and expense now, it was OK
the cones fore and aft need a slight tweak tighter
34 miles round trip, I'm beat
can't believe I have to go out soon
keep on truckin'
BTW: the flag totally gets me more courtesy clearance, I'll do anything for another inch or two
the temps were changeable - wore tights and wind pants in and tights and loose shorts home
up top wore 2 t-shirts - 1 long sleeve, and top layer was a fleece which I had to unzip and even carry on the way home, but then glad to have it for the last 8 miles
so much for aerodynamics
rechargeable AAs for front strobe are old garbage and tossed, rear super flash held up again this time clipped just to the flat edge of the rear rack - perfect fit
a little chaffed

The morning commute was good, cold compared to the last few days but good none the less. The trip home started off okay. About 3 miles form home I noticed something stuck to the side of my tire #%$#@!#$ was something close to what I must have said.... Fourth $#!@#@ing goat head in the last two weeks... in the middle of winter.... do we ever get break from these things? I made it all the way home and went inside had a drink, walked calmly back out the garage pulled on it and PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!! People complain that herpes is a problem... these things have got to be worse....

I did about 16 miles round trip today. The first half of my journey was great but the whole ride on the way back it rained. Luckily my jacket had a hood which I pulled up over my head and as low as I could on my forehead to try to keep the rain out of my eyes. Other than the rain it was a pleasant ride. :)

tarwheel 02-27-09 07:07 PM

I pressed my luck and rode today, despite the forecast for possible showers this afternoon. I got lucky and only hit some sprinkles on the way home, and the temperatures were really mild (mid-60s). This was the first week that I've ridden all 5 days in quite a while, plus I topped 600 miles for the first time ever in a February (636 total). It's usually my lowest mileage month of the year due to the weather and the fewer days. If I can squeeze in a ride Saturday, which is doubtful given the forecast for heavy showers, I could top 650 miles for the month.

Nettabird 02-27-09 07:18 PM

I'm still at work. 27 degrees F and central-Illinois, feel-the-trees-moving-with-your-eyes-closed windy.

I like to leave work later on days like these -- fewer cars on the roads. It's damned scary getting a gust of wind right when a car passes too closely!

buzzman 02-27-09 11:47 PM

just a short commute today over to Cambridge but did a road ride this afternoon. All lycraed and spandexed and road biked up. Managed to crank out 41 miles in the 50 mph gusting wind. Sometimes moving along very fast and sometimes struggling to keep upright.

Lots of cars running stop signs- an amazing number actually. Drivers treat me more respectfully on my commuter with upright bars, milk crate and blue jeans than on the road bike in full kit- why is that? It was a little disconcerting if truth be told.:(

more snow and cold on the way!

rumrunn6 02-28-09 06:44 AM

Hey Buzzman, congrats on the 40 miles. When I left W. Newton it was sunny and warm, by time I got to Concord it clouded up and got coldish again. About the cars running stops signs, I think Friday afternoon drivers are the worst. About less courtesy when in your kit, I think the Freds get more - maybe from fear - meaning a rider in a kit can be trusted to stay upright, and they can drive closer to you. It's not fair, every biker should get 3 feet.
