wet. No kid today, surprising how much cutting out that leg w/ the 7 yr old adds to my avg speed. Even w/ a detour over chunky gravel added in.

Weather was perfect. Cool, sunny and no wind.

Flatted-out: The culprit-- the remnants of what looks to be an old presta valve! This one inch piece of metal devastated my tube. Swapped out the tube and still got in early.

I met a cool commuter at the gym this morning. He rides 30 miles in (almost everyday I think), and rides the train home. He uses the gym to shower before work. I pointed him towards bikeforums.

I'm experimenting with a new 'early' schedule two days a week to free up some evenings. I get the 6:00am train, Swim at the gym and then off to the office at 8:15am. I'm also trying to ramp up, so I'm in decent condition to pull longer rides home (20-30) miles a few times a week without being wiped out, when daylight savings hits (plus my weekend riding).

Toes ... still ... so cold ... must ... double .. layer .... in morning.

I distinctly remember the forecast this morning as "wind-calm" and 29F. Didn't I? The 29F part didn't bother me so long as there was no wind. As it turns out there was plenty of wind, it was a blustery headwind ripping at my face and ears the entire way-very frustrating. Since we were supposed to be done with the wind I didn't wear my balaclava so...I lost the feeling in my face by the time I got to the MUP. I went to pass a guy and yelled something like: "on yer llllllllllll!"--my lips couldn't wrap themselves around the rest of the word. I think he understood me anyway. On top of that, my allergies decided to kick in yesterday morning and I've been a miserable, snotty, headachey mess ever since. I'm taking Advil cold and sinus with Claritan chasers, it seems really early to have to think about allergies. Oh well, the bike is running much better after the drive train replacement so, the fun is back.

Great mid-40's temps, clear skies, and beautiful. Rode into headwinds most of the way to the park-and-ride though. Brought my average speed down to 11mph or so. I was surprised it wasn't lower because I'm normally averaging around 13 mph (I have a hilly commute).

I really enjoyed the ride though. I hope to begin commuting by bike three days a week soon instead of two.

Had my annual checkup this morning so I rode to the doctor, got the exam (and I mean THE exam), had some blood taken, and then rode in.

Between giving blood last week, fasting overnight for the blood tests, the wind, the cold, and doubling my usual commute distance, I now feel like warmed-over garbage.

caloso 02-24-09 01:24 PM

Warmest morning of the year (52F when I left the house at 6:30). No need for the underhelmet beanie or gloves. Trying to get back into a rhythm that's been disrupted by the weather and the budget crisis.

Bulldozer 02-24-09 02:48 PM

Nice ride in this morning. Temp in the high 30's but felt warmer.

slloth 02-24-09 03:34 PM

Pretty good commute. When I got to work I got a call from my Wife asking me to come home to watch my sick little one. So I rode right back home. First time for that. It was different. My body usually get's at least a nine hour break in between rides. My commute is pretty short so it's not that bad. I just wasn't use to it. If I had a long commute like some of you it would be more tricky. I probably would have had to get a ride home.

Pretty cold for me, 37 degrees. That's just about as cold as it gets here. But I was dressed well for it. I'm hoping maybe today was the last morning I'll need the face mask and heavy jacket as it's supposed to be over 50 in the mornings the rest of the week.

I love reading the reports of riders from other areas.. :) 37 is balmy for us at the moment, it's that right now for a high. 19 degrees when I rode in this morning with a wind chill of single digits...

mtessmer 02-24-09 07:03 PM

Great commute both ways today, 17F in the morning and 38F in the afternoon with sun. I can make it all the way home now without lights or flashers. I still need them in the morning though.

buzzman 02-24-09 09:34 PM

whoa. I just sat down to write how my commute was and am so busy and distracted with work and stuff right now I could barely remember the ride.

It was 25〫F and windy tonight. But it's fine. I'm not normally one of those "can't wait for winter to be over folks" but this year has been relentless. I'm looking forward to some more light and some more warmth. But I'm very glad to ride every day. I don't know how people get through a winter cooped up indoors every day.

mickey85 02-25-09 06:03 AM

First bike commute since getting my cold last week.

33* and partly cloudy. I was cut off by a Ninja Biker that shot out of his driveway (I think it was ****** Ninja Biker because he had no lights, but was wearing a reflective vest). Yelled at him. Because of that, a nosebleed I had yesterday started up (stupid NB's...), so I rode halfway with my glove finger jammed up my nose, until I sniffled...the glove fell out, the clot slid back, and I was coughing blood sprays. Looked like something out of a horror movie.

But would I do it again? Hell yes! Buzzman, you're right on about being cooped up.

kegoguinness 02-25-09 06:51 AM

Great ride! After taking last week off from commuting, I forgot how hot I get when I ride. Today I commuted with one less layer than the previous two days, and was better for it. No wind today, and that was a big plus after the howlers we've had the last two days. Tightened the brakes last night and the extension post/headset screws on my folder and felt a much sturdier ride.

tarwheel 02-25-09 07:07 AM

This winter is getting rather tiresome, isn't it? I can't imagine what it must be like up North, because it has been the coldest sustained winter we've had in the Southeast in years. We haven't had any extremely cold weather, but it has been consistently cold since early November except for a week or so of unseasonably warm weather in early February.

I'm used to riding in the cold, and actually prefer it to extreme heat. However, I am really looking forward to spring this year.

MIKEnDC 02-25-09 07:32 AM

Man, busy morning for me to be posting this late. Earlier...

20F/pushing -7C, fair and calm. Couldn't really say about the fair part (pretty dark), but the calm was very welcome.

And given the mild forecast for the next week or so heading into March, this might be the last morning for winter tights. I'm not getting misty over it or anything, but I will happily tuck them away for next year with a hearty "Well done!" and a leg shake. :D

jpdesjar 02-25-09 08:39 AM

it felt good to pedal to work today since i have only been riding a couple times a week...there was still some icy spots to watch out for but for the most part the roads were clear

it was 13ºf when i left the house and sunny and my right thumb became very cold but then warmed up eventually

tdreyer1 02-25-09 09:36 AM

Ahh, it's warm again today! 40*f this morning & will get to around 60*f today! :D Wish I could afford to quit my job...... maybe some day.:(

FIRST COMMUTE EVER! I think I've given up commuting by car for Lent.

I finally felt prepared to untether myself from the car after the advice and inspiration found here on BF. Instead of doing the 16 mile direct route, I went 3.5 miles the other way to the New Haven station and took a 22 minute train ride and walked the remaining 1.4 miles. Not being able to afford a folder had been holding me back, but I was at work with 20 minutes to spare, so a walking leg will work. Besides, there is a bus if need be.

I rode my Panasonic. The RD is very funky, I have about 5 or 6 of the 12 speeds that work anything close to properly, despite my attempts to adjust it. Whatever, they're the gears I need and I needen't worry about the $40 bike out on the rack too much.

About 24 F, glorious red orange sunrise, at its most colorful as I pedalled East over a high bridge with a grand view of Long Island Sound, waterfowl flying underneath...

Only problem was that these particular work shoes that I rode in don't work too well with my toeclips, but at least I didn't have to toe down the whole ride. I'll probably have to wear different shoes.

On my way back, I can follow a slightly longer route along a beachside MUP.

Some aspects of work have been hell these past few days, and the energy boost from my short ride and walk are carrying me through in the nicest way. Feels great! I'm an instant convert.

Jacobs Girl 02-25-09 12:34 PM

I had to do a bit of commuting on monday. I had a couple errands to do as well. After I had finished with my errands I noticed that my front bike tire had blown. Green goo from the tube was all over the front tire. Gross. I had to walk my bike home. Luckily I was close to home when it happened. Been warm weather this week and we've all enjoyed it. :) Can't wait to get my bike fixed now and get on the road again.

Standalone 02-25-09 01:14 PM

green goo?

jpdesjar 02-25-09 01:38 PM

you got slimed

stevemtbr 02-25-09 03:26 PM

My commuting life totally sucks right now. Weather has been crap and now I've picked up a very bad virus. Just flat out called it quits until March. Hopefully things will turn around.

Grim 02-25-09 04:38 PM

My commute.

I have had weather and time issues for the last couple weeks. Today the first day i was able to commute...Loved it. Warmer then expected this morning and beat the rain home that we were not expecting. :thumb:

Good for you!!!! to tough it out in that cold for your first one is an accomplishment!

About that Panasonic....Might be more valuable then you think. Those old Japanese lugged frames are quite sought after by many of us. Go snoop around the Classic and Vintage forum. You may find new love for that old bike. Around here a cleaned up working Panasonic will bring $125 pretty quick on Craig's.

Know any "Burke's"? I have a brother-in-law with 4 sons that lives in that area.

HardyWeinberg 02-25-09 09:08 PM

insane ride home, headwind, rain, sleet, hail. All starting when I rolled 200' out the parking lot onto the main drag and building from there. Before I'd gone a block, I couldn't look up 'cause my face hurt so much from getting pelted.
