7F on the way in this morning with a good tail wind the whole way. I was ever so slightly overdressed so no problem feeling warm at all.

The ride home it was 12F with a very strong wind right in my face. I was perfectly warm from toes to my nose. BUT the wind really wore me down. I felt like I was pedaling through molasses especially with shoes covers and rain pants and mittens and balaclava and layers etc... I made it though and certainly have the right clothes and set up for this weather- my studded tires are a life saver since the bike path is covered with ice for long sections.

It was a looooooonnnnnnnnggggg slooooooooowwwww ride home. :o

freezing rain. weeee!

vtjim 02-06-07 07:55 AM

A little warmer than yesterday, but still low single digits (F). Moderate tail wind. Visibility is good. I could see Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks.

Two co-workers did the usual line of questioning: Isn't it cold? Aren't you cold? Etc. etc.

New PR for temperature this morning, 15F (yeah, I know, I know). Had the layering just right, as the legs and torso were comfortable the entire ride, but the fingertips were frozen even with ski gloves. Putting them in the shower HURT.

First day of commuting this month for me. The bike was in the shop over the weekend. Turned out the free hub for my wheel is back-ordered and has been for months, so I told them to just replace my wheel. The good news: the ride is easier and I can coast again (not that I ever do). The bad news: the gearing isn't quite right (I'm getting chain rattle and I'm maxing out the gears even on moderate downhills, which I shouldn't be able to do) and the new wheel is silver. The other wheel is black. She's starting to look like a real commuter now!

The tv here in Raleigh said 16F when I checked. Coldest morning I've seen and when my wife asked if I was riding I answered her like she was stupid for asking.

Relaxer 02-06-07 08:38 AM

It was 11 degrees in our nation's capital this morning, and it was the first morning I can recall that I didn't see any bikers on the road the whole time I was riding in. I'm sure there were plenty out and about, but I didn't come across a single one (and I was looking) over five miles of riding.
I was dressed well so never had an issue with the temperature. My shoes are on the verge of being overwhelmed, but managed to keep it all together. I'm very impressed that my hands/fingers are just fine wearing a pair of $30 REI gloves and a $1.50 pair of jersey garden gloves.

-13C + arctic headwinds, got soo lucky and drafted a truck all the way almost..... awesome....pocket of warm(er) air moving in my direction. Also perfectly shielded from traffic being a foot and a half behind the truck.

centuryman 02-06-07 08:55 AM

The average hi temp for today is 44F. It has been warmer than that since midnight. Great ride, beautiful sunrise, birds singing. Only one low point. Guy started swearing and yelling at me. We were traveling in opposite directions on a quiet, wide residential street. It was still dark. No other traffic in sight. It wasn't a cager. He was riding a bike in the opposite direction dressed all in black with no lights of any kind.

Got my Take-a-Look mirror in the mail, tried it out yesterday. I got a great view of... the top of my backpack. And the other side of the street. Bah. Maybe another reason to start thinking about getting a rack.

My need for fenders also made itself really obvious on the way home. On the upside, some of the snow is finally melting!

DataJunkie 02-06-07 09:04 AM

Woo hoooooo! Can you tell I am excited? :p
First commute since mid January!
In fact I biked the entire way of 28 miles. It took forever due to ice packed streets and me loosing my new route that connected my partial all street route with my southern all street route. That and I refused to go faster than 15mph.
While the temps ranged from 50F to 30F on my commute there was plenty of ice to be had. No slipping. No sliding. No falling. *knocks on wood* Thank goodness they are grating the streets in Denver. Too bad all the trails are positively horrid. Hence the all street route and dodging potholes. Maybe in a month or two I can actually ride a trail occasionally.

A balmy 13F this morning, a definite improvement over yesterday's 8F. Before I even started pedaling, I got honked at. I usually step into the street in front of my apartment, next to a fire hydrant, get on, clip in and pedal off. Some woman in an SUV pulled up and double parked, waiting for me to leave my spot in front of the hydrant. After waiting a full 2 seconds, she honked at me. When I looked at her, she started motioning that she was waiting for me to leave and what was taking me so long. Last I heard, if I'm established in the spot, you can go f*ck yourself til I leave. So I motioned to the hydrant and asked if she was mentally challenged. Then I pedaled off thinking it was kind of early to be so obnoxious.

At work, a co-worker asked how the ride was. I told him it was too short and would've been nicer if it was longer. He laughed and told me to keep up the good work.

pinkrobe 02-06-07 09:22 AM

-9C I think. I still have a cold, and the Nyquil I took last night made [makes] it hard to think straight. My reaction time was nonexistent on the ride in. I rode over some sort of plastic jug, then hit some other So yeah, I should have stayed in bed.

TRaffic Jammer 02-06-07 09:50 AM

nice one jyossarian....you know THAT is the start to a day

noisebeam 02-06-07 10:01 AM

I bundled up for the morning chill. It was a bitter 48F, I could feel it nipping my sockless feet thru the web of my sandals.

A very comfortable 47F. I allowed myself to go too fast on the slight decline I have on my route. I was up to 24mph, which means I was spinning almost 120 rpm.

acroy 02-06-07 10:57 AM

Very pleasant 45F ride in. A tad butt-sore from the Big Chill ride in Houston on Sunday. great commute. Hope the weather stays nice for a bit.

substructure 02-06-07 12:07 PM

Brutal cold for this southern boy - around 19f. My hydration pack's line and nozzle froze. So I kept it slow - real slow because I had no fluids for a good while.

Yeah, not as nice as catching a draft off a truck for the commute though. Traffic's good for something.

tlupfer 02-06-07 12:23 PM

-2F with a -7F windchill and snow. ridiculous! at least if it's going to snow it should cease with the silly temperatures.

bikedaddy 02-06-07 01:28 PM

First morning commute above freezing since November. Excellent!

I was mostly able to travel at top speed with little worry of ice. Lots of melting snow so many big puddles to ride through. I have the fenders so I might as well put them to work.

robtown 02-06-07 01:32 PM

5F this morning and I had to keep sipping on the camelpack to keep the line from freezing. The chemical packs bunched up and crowded my toes but I guess they helped slightly. Ski helmet and googles today.
The big question is will I round trip home again - and perhaps ride back in with my studded tires in 18F and fresh snow tomorrow.

chephy 02-06-07 02:53 PM

-11 C. Warmer than yesterday and SUNNY! Yay!

A lot of fun just about sums it up. Except that part on a little street where I got stuck behind a really slow van at some point: the driver started braking for the next stop sign as soon as she took off after stopping for the previous one... And I couldn't even pass her because there wasn't enough distance between the bloody stop signs. And she stayed stopped at each stop sign for, like, five seconds... and those stop signs add up. I'm not sure if she assumed I was a scofflaw stopsign-running cyclist and wanted to teach me a lesson or if she always drives like that... must get a lot of grief from fellow cagers... but I didn't mind it too much. It was a relatively short stretch. :)

I'm really proud of how I'm handling some of the hills on my commute. They seem to be considerably less work than they used to be, even though I'm doing them in slush with knobbies now. I guess I'm getting stronger. *happy giggle*

Evil! :p
It ranged from 50F to 30F on my commute. Ice interspersed with puddles of water or vice versa. No need to worry when things refreeze since they were already mostly frozen. odd..... Perhaps, too many tree lined streets.

jyossarian 02-06-07 05:21 PM

I think my bb needs an overhaul. Maybe the hubs too. And the chain's covered in salt. And the clip on my blinkie snapped off. Good thing I got another bike. Oh yeah, commute was fine, just one cager honked at me cuz I was in front of him at a red light.

gmule 02-06-07 09:45 PM

I have been unable to commute due to the severe snowstorms and below 0 termperatures. Well today it was 40 deg F when I left my home and the news said it was going to be in the mid 60's. So halfway to work I stopped and called into work sick and went on a 40 mile fun ride instead of working today.
