I'm finally feeling better today, but still a little foggy. I made a total bonehead move about 3 blocks from work and got stuck in the right-turn only curb lane when I needed to go straight. Instead of waiting for a gap and moving over, I filtered toward the front, then squeezed in behind a guy with two skidoos on his truck. Did I mention that this put me in the path of traffic waiting to go through the green light? Yah, total bonehead move. I should have just taken the second lane and be done with it, instead of using the curb lane.

Huh. So _that's_ what they mean by "freezing fog".

Sunshine, fog, freezing fog, snow - all in a 12 mile commute. What a great day to ride a bike!
|
No commute today. 90 miles in 2 days has exhausted me....more miles than the entire time since the blizzard. It is going to take a little while to get back up to steam. Can't believe I used to ride this mileage daily. Gym day!
It is a bit amusing that on my off day it gets foggy. Colorado drives flip out in it. My home town in Washington State frequently had fog so thick you could not see your front bumper. The fools here are perplexed in 1/2 mile visibility. duh Anyhow, the bus took a little while longer. Yesterday's return commute had an annoying interaction with another idiot cyclist. Lets see if I can describe this properly. :p The street is two lanes crossing a 5 lane street at a light. While in traffic I was doing about 25mph due to a nice downhill and sprinting to cross the intersection while riding east bound. With oncoming traffic the other cyclist hops off the curb to my left without looking and started crossing the street directly in front of a mini van going west bound and riding in a bee line directly towards me. He noticed the mini van and then me, stopped and hightailed it back to his sidewalk while I was yelling "what the hell are you doing?". Some people. |
Hey 4 Colorado posts in a row!
I skipped out on the commute today. I got all ready and rode down the street, almost falling over about 3 times due to freezing fog/drizzle. Turned around and had the wife drop me off. Too bad because I'm sure everything will be clear in a few hours. Last night as soon as I got south of Harmony Road the fog started. It was kinda creepy because a neighborhood street I ride on seemed deserted and my lights were doing some weird stuff in the fog. I really enjoyed it. Too bad it froze overnight. |

Foggy, snowy and cold this morning. Rode the xcheck and loved it. So much faster than the studded-tire singlespeed mtb. Everything was covered in a light dusting of snow. Very lovely. The first time I have had to turn the lights on in the morning.

20 degrees in our nation's capitol today. Rode the fixed to work for the first time and enjoyed it a lot. The pain of my stolen Cannondale commuter is still ripe, but it's helped along its way by my increasing enjoyment of riding the fixie through rush hour traffic. Some day, one day, I just might be a badass. But... probably not. Maybe a grayarea-ass or a mediocre-ass.

hairlessbill, people tell me I like the color yellow (I have a yellow bike, and wear a yellow jersey and black-and-yellow socks). Based on those pics, you must REALLY like yellow!

42F Adding mileage back to the route now that spring is coming.

Bloody cold today. Big time headwinds and windchill. Fabbed up some handguards from 14 ga aluminium ala dirt bike brush gaurds that worked reasonably well. Just too cold for fingered gloves no matter how thick. Need to dig out/find the inner gloves for my lobster claw miits.

sleet, i can still feel it pelting my face like pin pricks. first time I've come across that.

heh. i had a rheumatologist's appointment on tuesday, so i bought me a floor pump with built-in pressure gauge afterwards. finally got to find out what kind of pressure i've been riding on with those snow studs. barely 20 psi . . . well, i thought the commute was feeling like an unreasonable amount of work these past weeks. going round corners is fun with the tires at their recommended dry-road pressure; you get this zzzziiiipppp sound-effect as the leaning angle brings the studs into contact with the road again.
kind of fighting off the side-effects of a new/extra medication, but hopefully it'll move the benchmark back up in the long run. right now i feel mostly preoccupied with a barfing motif. |
I'm so used to the colder temps. 20F is feeling distinctly warm.
Yesterday managed to run an errand at lunch time in downtown Boston in such short time that I can guarantee that no other mode of transport would have been as efficient. Nothing short of miraculous that I accomplished what I needed in such short shrift. I really love riding along the frozen Charles River on the way in and home (at night). I'm so tempted to just head out onto it on my studded snow tires and ride into Boston that way- this is, of course, a ludicrous idea since there are sections of the river that are barely frozen over and some areas that have no ice at all but.... the idea that I could, hmmmm...... saw a rat tonight- again. fantastic rides these days, though. |
Beautiful sdawn this morning - Look east this morning - it's worth it.

Whoo, 19F and 'realfeel' of 10 this morning. Nice and crisp. I usually pass a number of commuters going the other way (into DC) but only saw one this morning. My commuter is a Kona Jake. I probably could have gotten away with a road bike with fatter tires, but the knobbies sure come in handy on packed snow days like this.

First bicycle tracks end-to-end on the MUP today. Some peds with dogs had been out in the snow before me in a couple of sections but otherwise I had a nice untouched ribbon of powder all to myself. :) Temperature in the single F digits.
Got into the city and the roads were so mucked up with wet, sloppy, salty snow that I opted to ride on the sidewalk for the 3 blocks between the MUP and my office. :o I dismounted and walked around a pedestrian. Good for me. :D |
Today went okay, though i my legs were tiring out faster than usual (probably since this is only my 3rd time doing my bike commute and i did it yesterday too).
Oh, and my right knee started to get a slight twinge of pain... Probably from my cleats so i adjusted those when i got into work. My road shoes have been adjusted to perfection (i've done 64 miles with no knee pain), but since i use MTB shoes for riding to work they don't have many miles on them so i haven't really been able to tell if they're adjusted well or not. We'll see how things feel on the ride home and over the weekend. |
Totally wonderful today - probably about 65 F - clear, not a lot of humidity. Dry road. It was paradise. No cows or chickens either!

We'll see how things feel on the ride home and over the weekend. Knee issues were an issue for me when I first started commuting. Some proper stretches, and down shifting on hills instead of just mashing up them dealt with it nicely, as well as the occasional icing when I get home when they still hurt. |
32f, dampish, foggy ride in. Very fun.
I am glad i went to fatter (1.75inch) tires. there is a lot of sand leftover on the shoulders from the ice a while back. No way skinnies would make it through safely. There was a body covered by a sheet on I-35, they had it closed down. Looked like some poor fool tried to run across the highway & got nailed. |
