Crisp this morning. Down around zero F, with a good tail wind. So much for an early spring. :p

cooperwx 02-05-07 07:46 AM

My coldest ride ever this morning, 19°F/-7°C with about a 10mph wind in my face. Got to test out the new balaclava...toasty!!

Also left about 10 minutes later than I like to, and paid for it with increased traffic. Amazing what a difference 10 minutes can make.

chipcom 02-05-07 07:48 AM

-6 F with a -21 wind chill. Darn road to work was a sheet of icy snow too - not a fun ride this morning. Luckily, hot coffee and donuts cure all ills. ;)

jyossarian 02-05-07 07:56 AM

8F when I left according to NY1. Wore the balaclava and swore I'd never wear it again. The part that covers my nose is too long so when I breathe hard, the flap bends back and covers my nostrils making it harder to breathe. Did a 1/2 mph fall at a red light. I was barely moving and my rear tire was on the painted white crosswalk lines. I saw the intersection was clear so as I mashed forward, the rear wheel slipped and I stopped automatically and fell over before I could unclip. Not too many people around and only one person asked if I was ok, but for anyone watching on the bus behind me, that was for you. Near as I can tell, the slip wasn't caused by ice so I'm guessing it's dry salt dust on the slippery white paint.

Around -5C and calm. Nice commute, maybe overdressed a bit. It's supposed to hit +9C today, I think I'll don a t-shirt for the ride home. There is impending bad/cold weather for the rest of the week. Freezing rain tomorrow followed by temps in the negative teens.

Relaxer 02-05-07 08:52 AM

14 degrees in our nation's capital and temperatures were flaring! Just seemed like the peds were being even more aggressive (dashing into the street, running across lights) and more verbal about it, and the drivers were being even more clueless than usual.
But that's their problem. I really enjoyed the ride in yesterday. Was sore from a long ride in the sun yesterday, but it was good. I was a little disappointed when I reached the gym after 5 miles as I was just starting to really loosen up.

TRaffic Jammer 02-05-07 09:07 AM

-15C.... -28C with the wind (60kph headwind), took forEVER to get dressed, but all ion all not too bad on the way in. I do need new winter gloves though, I've worn these finger tips down. I think I want big snowboard gloves.

Do you ever wear eye protection in those temperatures? From what I was told it was -3F here and I didn't wear goggles or anything. Didn't feel any ill effects but I wonder at what temperatures I would.

pinkrobe 02-05-07 09:44 AM

I caught a cold from a co-worker, so now I'm surly and I don't have the will to live. It's supposed to snow tonight, then get very cold the rest of the week. Maybe I'll die in a snowbank tomorrow...

Same as I always wear, shooting glasses, though I wouldn't be opposed to trying goggles...just afraid of how bad they'd fog up when stopped or on slow climbs.

Same here. I was all decked out for an Arctic expedition and consequently found myself quite comfortable on the ride in. There is something really exhilirating about winter riding although I almost took the subway today since my boyfriend really wanted me to after reading the forecast. But it's amazing how many cyclists I keep seeing every day under these conditions. I even saw a guy today riding with a kid in a child seat. They seemed to be enjoying the ride. :) The drivers, however, seem to have the most miserable time with all the snow etc. My mother was complaining to me today how slow her drive was because people were driving like morons creating jams everywhere.

That's it for the weather report, now on to the traffic news. :D A truck almost turned left into me, and since AirZound is next to useless in temps like this I just yelled "Hey!" on top of my lungs. My voice stops cars! Pretty powerful! I also heard one of the longest honks I've ever heard on the road today. And it wasn't directed at me. Just cagers being mean to each other... And yeah, passed a two-car accident scene at Avenue and Davenport. Can anyone explain to me how you have a collision at 6:30 a.m. on basically empty streets? Beats me...

TRaffic Jammer 02-05-07 10:38 AM

That's because there was at least one more car on the road other than itself. I think cars are somewhat like dogs when you walk them and they come across other dogs. They just make a beeline for each other , either that or it's a magnetic thing. I've worn the fingertips of my gloves thin, need new ones.

livewirerc 02-05-07 11:29 AM

VERY nice! Rode my new Karate Monkey (See it in the commuter pic thread) and had a BEAUTIFUL, sunny, mid 50s ride. Good stuff!

TRaffic Jammer 02-05-07 11:36 AM

I've done ski goggles over my glasses, and have had varying degrees of fogging. A decent pair of antifog (double layered) ski goggles and you should be all set.

caloso 02-05-07 12:05 PM

Saw my cousin's husband ("cousin-in-law"?) driving to work this morning. He was stuck in a long line of cars waiting for a train. I waved but I don't think he recognized me in my Fred outfit.

HardyWeinberg 02-05-07 12:22 PM

Nice, warmed up a bunch from last week, into the 40s. Passed 2 commuters coming in today (passed 4 going home Friday). I think the seasons are turning enough to bring out the snowbirds.

fordfasterr 02-05-07 12:29 PM

Wet and windy , 20+ mph headwind for 7 miles non-stop + rain.

I don't know why I torture myself like this... ohh wait, I remember now... I'd rather ride into a volcano than drive to work ...

I think you're onto something here! Remember how everyone says they come in packs!

Now we just need a leash law for them and we'll be all set! :D

I'm the exact opposite. I'd rather ride into the waiting arms of a voluptuous young woman holding a pizza than drive to work.

centuryman 02-05-07 01:16 PM

First bicycle commute since before Christmas. I'm not comfortable riding on streets with lots of rough ice. About 30F when I left the house. Man do I need to get some butt miles in. MUP has not been plowed since before Christmas. Not a big issue - one entrance is impassable due to mud and the other end is closed until Oct 2008 for road construction. So now I negotiate this section on a 6 lane road. Good shoulder and lower cager speed due to construction zone.

Frankenbiker 02-05-07 03:00 PM

Minus three this morning when I took off. Got almost to work and was juuuust passed by a school bus before he stopped to pick up a kid and put his stop lights on. I had to stop right behind him and inhale the belching diesel fumes as he took off again. I then immediately had to dodge a cyclist riding the wrong way on my side of the street (couldn't see him due to the school bus). One-half block later, there was a three-car accident where a pickup truck had just rear-ended a car that was starting to parallel park on my side of the street and pushed the car into the row of parked cars (also couldn't see it due to the school bus). Usual Monday morning chaos.

HardyWeinberg 02-05-07 04:11 PM

Took a 13 mile spin at lunch, good to get out. Very foggy, though, was wishing I had my reflect-o-vest. Driving company car home tonight and off for a meeting tomorrow, bike stays at work in its cube. Hopefully will be ble to drop the car off tomorrow pm and bike home.

blackcannon 02-05-07 04:33 PM

Man, so I rode to work today thinking about how cold it was going to be but it actually wasn't bad...Nicer when i got off from work with temps in low 30's...Heard about the temp dropping into teens tonight and tought: "I am def driving to work tomorrow". But after reading you guys stories of riding the way you do, I decided: "man, I am def riding to work tomorrow...This ain't nothing compared to what these guys are doing"!

robtown 02-05-07 05:53 PM

12F when I arrived home on my one-way commute. Tommorow morning at 5F or lower will be interesting. The chemical warmers inside my Lake winter shoes saved my toes. Calling for snow and 18F Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning. Not sure if I'll try the studded tires or drive in.

RomSpaceKnight 02-05-07 06:42 PM

-16C with windchill doen to -29C. Can we all say bloody cold out.
