Ugh. It was 'one' of those mornings. I didn't get nearly enough sleep (around 3 hours) and on top of that I tired myself out very badly on my commute home yesterday. So this morning was less than 'great'. But, I made it just the same. I just wasn't as fun as usual. But now I'm ready for my lunch ride, and then my ride home. Hopefully it'll rain just so I can see what its like to ride in the rain ;)

First morning ride of the year in just shorts & jersey! Temp was 55F/13C. The sun was brilliant. I felt really good so pushed a bit harder that I normally would on the way to work. For the second time this year, I was almost hit by an Canadian goose flying over the road about 4'/1.2M off the ground. I have my 3 month doctor appointments tomorrow so I will be taking photos of my commute route to share with everyone.

I have a short commute, approx 1 mile. But today's was awesome.

Pulled up to the light closest to my house. Saw a coworker at the light in his nice fancy SUV.

So he rolls down the window and I ask if he wants to race. He laughs and says that I'd probably beat him. He's just being nice because this is the only light between us and work, and there are no stop signs. But I accept the challenge anyway. (I know, it's my challenge and he didn't accept, but I did... :-) )

He beats me to the front gate, but cars must go about 1/4 mile out of their way to get to the parking lot in front of our building (we work in same building). I'm on a bike so I take a shortcut and stand up and start pedalin. He makes his last turn before the lot and he's in front of my by about 100 yards. We're 300 yards from the front door. I know I've got him beat cause he has to park and walk to the front door. But I keep pedalin anyway, and get to the front door at 25.5mph, and i get to the front door before he even shuts off his engine. Felt good.

I guess I should have answered that thread about "Do you commute to save time?" differently, since I've found out today that I'm faster to my desk than my driving coworkers.

My commute today was good. It was hot this morning about 21 degrees, now it is about 27 or so, not much wind. The biggest obstacle to overcome is the way some of the girls are dressed, they are distracting my ability to ride, I am spending more time staring than I am riding. It looks good for the rest of the week as well.

cyclochica 06-29-04 12:51 PM

For a year I have been keeping an eye on this thread, hoping one day I would be able to contribute to it. Well that day is finally here. My very first commute by bike was fantastic. I couldn't have been blessed with better weather. I can't wait for the ride home and I am kicking myself wondering what took me so long to get to this point.

There are so many bike commuters in my area now, it was really cool to greet each person this morning with a smile and a "good morning". I guess it is a good thing I have nothing unusual to report.

Welcome to the addiction! And yes, nothing "bad" unusual to report is a good thing. :D

My second day of pulling a trailer to day camp and on to work. This time, I made it all the way to the top of a steep (about 200 feet in 1/4 mile) hill on Walter Reed. For the next week and a half, I will have a loaded one-way commute of one hour over the steepest hills in the area. Now, this is peanuts compared to what a lot of you do, but i=t is my intro to "hardcore commuting" -- a big step from my usual 10 mile round trip carrying only raingear and a lock.

Interestingly, I have more energy during the day as a result of my morning workout. (I also have a lot less energy come 9 pm or so.)

I'll be pulling the trailer all summer, but after next week my daughter will do a different day camp and I will havew a shorter, less demanding ride. The Four Mile Run bike trail is amazingly beautiful in the morning -- a big change from my usual congested roads.

Got hit by a truck with "whiskey" plates yesterday - He hit my barend with the tailend of his truck when the two lane road shifted into a one lane.

Today I got told to get off the ******** road, and then I got swore at more when I told the moron to learn the rules of the road or he should get off instead.

Only halfway into my second week of commuting and I already have to deal with this... ugh...

Deej 06-29-04 05:00 PM

What a great commute. My commute is 25K and I had a tail wind to work and back. Happens about once a year!

Kodama 06-29-04 05:11 PM

The summer weather continues, with 70(f) and clear skies as I head home. The tailwind that becomes the headwind when I ride hom was present as usual. For the first time in a while the trail didn't have the detour onto the road, so no break to the ride. Still tired but I enjoyed the ride.

ollo_ollo 06-29-04 05:34 PM

Colder this morning, 48F at 6:00 AM so I had to wear a long sleeve jersey with my shorts. Only saw one other commuter today. By my afternoon commute, we were back up to 81F with a bit of head wind. I broke a toe strap on the way home. It had been rubbing on the crank, the other side was also but didn't wear as much I guess. They were Pinarello's too so probably can't find a replacement.

Zin 06-29-04 05:52 PM

I had a run in with a jerk in a Ford F-150 on the way home. Click here to read my rant on the incident

Otherwise, it was such a great day to be on the bike. Temps near 80F and light winds. Lots of people out on the river again this evening.

Bob

EDIT: From reading some of today's other posts, I can only guess that it must be the moon phase causing the incedents mentioned.

[QUOTE=Gus Riley]I thought it would be interesting to have a thread where commuters might post the results of their daily commute.

Another beautiful, warm day in Seattle. I work downtown and live in Burien just south of Seattle. The ride is 12 miles door to door. It is a pleasant ride at any time, but especially in summer. The only bad part is going through Rat City in the early morning hours, where I frequently encounter gangs trolling the streets. But so far they have never done anything except give me the evil eye, and I blow through Rat City in about three minutes. After work, I cruise around the downtown area for an hour or more and hit book stores or Bud's Jazz Records, then find somewhere to have dinner. It's really great being loose in town with my bike! Today, as on most days in spring and summer, I had a nice tail wind to assist me going home and made it in 40 minutes, despite having a lot of long hills to climb.

Chris L 06-30-04 04:17 AM

12 Degrees C this morning, and about 19 this evening. Had a pr!ck of a day at work today, so the ride home was just what I needed. Another couple of morons fighting over one parking space this evening, again I blasted straight between them without even batting an eyelid.

mrfix 06-30-04 04:29 AM

This is one of the nicest mornings of the year so far, no head wind, clear sky and wildlife everywhere. forecast for the afternoon ride home is hot and dry, maybe I'll leave work early and take the long way home. Welcome to the world of commuting Cyclochica.

ridealot 06-30-04 05:21 AM

Nice commute in this morning, a little on the chilly side with tempature around 54(F). That won't last. Humid sticky weather is in the forecast for the rest of the week.

Corsaire 06-30-04 05:56 AM

Reporting from Fairfield, NJ.
Nice, quiet ride on a rather cool side morning, it'll be hot going back home though.
It helps with the summer hours starting at 7:30 am, that means I start riding at 6:10am, all the roads are fairly empty at that time. A good thing.
Corsaire :)

Ride:
From Clifton, through Paterson, West Paterson, Totowa, Little Falls, Wayne, to Fairfield.

Ed Holland 06-30-04 06:23 AM

I took the short route today in the interests of recovery from riding at the weekend and a particularly intensive game of football on Monday evening. My poor legs were still like lead blocks this morning... It was a good journey though and I can tell that I will bounce back with more strength and power than before.

Cheers,

Ed

Nice morning here in Denver, temps in the mid 50s. I altered the route a bit this morning. The change put me on pavement for a couple of miles more than usual, but I only saw two cars. The pavement was level, nice and new. With no cracks, bumps and cars it seems I was able to go much faster with no effort. I wonder what it will be like on the way home.

javagrrl 06-30-04 11:16 AM

Great morning, overcast and cool. Tried new route this morning with added hill. One of those sneaky looks flat in a car kind of grades that never ends! Will play with the route on the way home as well, still trying to find the best way to work for my current level of experience/fitness. Have to say though, that I am learning to own the road and cars no longer intimidate me as much as they did before! Probably helps that the folks near my house are getting used to seeing me, too.

PaulH 06-30-04 11:37 AM

Tried a variation on my segment from Fairlington to the Arlington Court House area today. I found a more direct route that bypasses the steep section on Walter Reade and cuts a least a mile off the total. Easy as pie and 5 minutes faster.

Another beautiful, fairly cool morning.

Paul

caloso 06-30-04 12:01 PM

Cool here too. Good for my ride in but my tomatoes are still green! They need some of that famous frying-pan-hot Sacramento heat to bring out the red.

I was beat this morning and slept in, skipping my run, still half-asleep on the bike on the way to the office. Now I'm feeling like sneaking out of the office for a 20-mile spin.

Alphie 06-30-04 02:25 PM

Had yesterday off, had to leave this morning about 5:15 am, was working 6-3. Nice and cool and peaceful riding in the darkness this morning. Had to take a long route because the bike path is closed after dark; I did not mind a bit. The ride home was on damp roads with weather cooled by afternoon showers. Got my handlebar bag from Nashbar yesterday, taking my clothes to work is much easier now.

mtessmer 06-30-04 02:35 PM

Nice ride in this morning to my office that's the closest to home only to find the bridge that crosses the freeway is under construction and the lanes are narrowed and the bike lane is closed. Hmmmmm... well, I made it in one piece. I'll take the longer way home but I'll still have to deal with that bridge, it's my only option. Wish me luck. At least we finally have summer.

Kodama 06-30-04 02:41 PM

Cooler this morning then it has been the last few days. The wind was variable this morning which meant I generally had headwinds in all directions :) I need to leave work a bit early today so I pushed it on the way in. Even with the wind I had a nice quick ride in.
