After seeing several bike commuters on my drive to work in the northern california bay area, I made up my mine to commute by bike as much as possible. So with the support of my co-workers, I can at least ride home part way 3x a week. I drive to a park n ride area where my co worker picks me up and then I ride back from the office after work. The commute is 30 miles. On Fridays, I have another co worker pick me up at home. Then I can ride home with my commute being 45 miles. The commutes to the park and ride are roughly 1 hour and 35 minutes and the friday ride home is usually 2 hours and 15 minutes. The commuting/riding in general has help me tremenously in controling my diabetes and weight. So far the results by biking/commuting are my doctor has reduced my medication for my diabetes in half and I have lost 25 lbs. As for me another streets ride in today and home. I prefer the mindlessness I can engage in on the bike path. did a little section of the path tonight on the way over to BU and a rat ran across the path and it made me holler, not scream- holler- a much more masculine response. |
oooh first commute of the am!
wife woke me 4am, sister-in-law is having her baby, so wife leaves to go help out. So I come into work early. it snowed about an inch last night; bridges are icy. pretty spooky in places. Weather is awesome, 30f and still. new Schwalbe Marathons kept me upright thus far - glad i have a little bit of tread pattern to hold onto the snow. you northerners will laugh, but these icy roads are getting old! they don't plow or spread salt, just spread some sand on it & go home. doesn't do much, and they're bout out of sand! this is the 3rd or 4th time this winter already, the local authorities are not used to dealing with winter weather, and local residents (self included) are not able to drive in it |
currently -7F (-22 celsius) with a -24F (-31 celsius) windchill. leaving for work in about an hour. dang!

It was 28 when I rode home yesterday. It felt like spring. I had all sorts of energy. :) The sunset was very pretty but the cell phone isn't good at capturing that stuff. Oh well.
No ride this morning. Hiked to the bus instead. Going out drinking after work. I saw a couple of people riding though. It's 22F. Balmy! Picture is my bike straddling the Colchester/Burlington town line. Ice on Lake Champlain. |
Rode through some light rain last night on my way home. Since school was canceled there wasn't too much traffic. This morning I got a wave from a high school girl walking to her bus stop, saw another commuter and got buzzed by a couple of cars in the 45mph zone. It was wet and misting but it wasn't too bad. I took the shorter route which cut out about a half mile since I was tired.

Nice ride in today- streets and MUP were clear of ice, but a slight glazing on some concrete, brick driveways, etc. No incidents, and then when I roll into our parking deck and take my foot off the pdeals and onto the curb I almost bit it due to hidden ice...

Lowered my seat 10mm, and my bike is comfortable to ride again. My wife was pretty slow this morning. I kept dropping her, then I realized the dial was set at 400W. Who knew?
A balmy -10C this morning, 1 inch of fresh on the ground and still snowing. |
A nice, uneventful ride in this morning. Temp around 41F. Ordered some Ortlieb bags the other day - can't wait until they get in! At the rate I'm going, I'll start saving money by bike commuting around the time I turn 100. :p At least it's good exercise.

Nice ride today. Cold (20sF), frosty, but not slippery.

I really think this bike repair thing is addictive...that and riding.. Todays commute warmer than yesterday, using new chain lube (all weather) that makes me feel better. Probably gonna give it another wash on Sunday....Arggggg! |

The pre-leave nerves i call 'em Once you're going it's great but that mind thing about staying nice and cozy is really hard to fight :) Some mornings I don't think, I just load-up, get on and "go"! I'm always happy I did that after the first 5 minutes.. Cheers. |
Back on the fixie today. I had it in the shop to get my internet-special wheels trued and tensioned. I swear, I'm never buying a machine-built wheel again. It's pennywise/poundfoolish.

24F Awesome sunrise. |
Bad start to February for me, and the month doesn't look good.
Worked from home yesterday and today (weather yesterday, unmotivated today) so no commute. And now wife just returned from OB appt. to say the doctor doesn't think she'll make it another week before delivery (which is fine, she's full-term). Taking two weeks of paternal leave doesn't leave much of the month. Ah well, February's a pretty crappy month for cycling anyway (even in NC). |

pleasant commute today,
temp was a warm comfortable plus 11 F this morning, very little breeze and all the cars, trucks and suvs were behaved. this eve, it was a rather balmy 25, with just a little head wind, some road slop but otherwise no traffic issues. |
Snow today, but not terribly cold (30 degrees F). I know for some of you this nothing more than a light dusting, but around here it's rare to see any accumulation. My co-workers were utterly shocked to see me ride today, which seems strange since I take the MUP almost all the way to work and if I had driven I'd have had to take the slick roads with a bunch of people who don't know how to drive in snow. I also took a few pictures:

Broke a drive side spoke on the rear wheel about 1/2 mile from home tonight. I decided to go easy on the bike and walked home the rest of the way. Once I got home I took the wheels off and drove to the LBS.
I told the mechanic at the LBS I'm commuting Mon, Wed, + Fri, and said he would fix the wheel tommorrow. Hopefully, I'll be biking home Monday. |
Freezing temperatures, ice on the roads. Cold tired and hungry after working 12hr night shift, seemed like my legs were 10 years older. Up now for tonights cold commute. Feel much better though, and it hasn't started to freeze up yet. But it will be frozen over in the morning.

-12F with a -39F windchill this morning. my freehub took about six or seven pedal revolutions to engage. only slightly warmer on the way home.

10 miles of solid ice today! No kidding. I don't think I had more than 100' of real pavement until I got to downtown Boston.
We had a weird snowstorm last night that dumped an icy rain/snow mix for two hours and then froze solid. I am ever thankful to Bike Forums for convincing me last year to buy some studded Nokias. I've ridden in New England winters for years but I think if not for the studs I wouldn't have tried it today. Amazingly I got downtown in really good time (a steady wind was at my back) and I rode on stuff that I know I could not have walked on without falling. I'm inspired by these winter bikers in Bike Forums. We're in for the bitter cold much of you in the mid-west have been dealing with this week so this ice will be here for a while. The ride home with the low slung yellow almost full moon having over the ice covered Charles River was almost too extraordinary to be believed. |
After reading all these posts of you guys riding in these cold wintery conditions, I decided I need to stop being lazy and stop looking at cold weather as an excuse not to ride...You guys inspired me to start riding to work now instead of waiting until the spring...Thank you...I rode in this morning despite it being colder weather than usual out here...It was in the low 20's this morning but it really wasn't that bad once you ride for about 10 minutes...It only took me 20 minutes! I ususally take 10 by car...I go a different route by bike...Nice! I look forward to now being one of those inpirational people...I'm going to save so much money on gas too if I ride regularly! I love it...

Another winter morning defeated! -14C this morning, -32C with the wind chill. My glasses fogged up and froze over, making it difficult to see. Had to line my cycling shoes with plastic bags for a little extra warmth. But, I made it in safely, much to the amazement of my co-workers.
