It was back to long pants and an outer shell, but it is still not as bad as it has been this winter,
32 F (0 C) and no wind. This afternoon the temp is supposed to be near 70 F (20 C), but I will
wait til I leave to see. Then back to the 20s and 30s F (-8 and 0 C) for the rest of the week. Daytime
averages will no doubt be a little higher. The final throws of winter are here.

Felt slow the whole way in yesterday, before I left to go home I checked my tires and my front was 20psi low...

I guess the bike gods were teaching me not to be lazy about checking the bike over the night before...

HardyWeinberg 03-11-09 10:17 AM

30F and sunny

My 2-year-old brought home a stomach virus last week and gave it to me (it's nice to know they teach her how to share at her very expensive day care). I got a ride home from my wife on Thursday, threw up less than an hour after getting home, and , um, "had the runs" until yesterday. By Sunday it had become so bad that my wife took me to urgent care where they pumped 2 bags of IV fluids into me.

All of this is to explain why I drove yesterday. I rode today but I still don't have anything like my normal energy. I'm still dehydrated and I've lost about 5 pounds since last week (5 pounds I really couldn't afford to lose). Not sure if I'll ride tomorrow and Friday, as the weather is supposed to get pretty bad and I'm obviously still recovering.

5 below and I was out there for about 40 minutes and very comfortable. Did go to the chemical warmers for the toes though. That's kinda like cheating really. :o

And you call yourself a bike commuter?

:p Feel better.

noglider 03-11-09 03:52 PM

vtjim, you live on Lake Champlain! Must be beautiful there. But I can't imagine what your climate must be like.

FredOak 03-12-09 05:57 AM

27*F, no wind, light snow...it was Zen like...I was making record time too until these two buses decided to play lane hogs for almost a mile...but none the less a great ride and the legs felt great too.

JoeSoMD 03-12-09 05:59 AM

This morning I had a... TAILWIND! ALL THE WAY!

Very dark due to clouds blocking the moonlight. For me... the darker the better.

And an added bonus... a grey fox trotted along with me for a few yards. I was surprised at how big that sucker was. Maybe it thought I was breakfast.

tarwheel 03-12-09 06:01 AM

Our warm spell continues in NC but it is supposed to end tomorrow with 4-5 days of cold, rainy weather forecasted. So I rode to work today despite legs that are turning to mush from riding 8 days in a row, 220+ miles. I took it easy and fortunately had a tail wind this morning, so hopefully a nice recovery pace will cure me.

Thank you, both for the well-wishes and the sarcasm. :) I'm glad someone appreciated the self-deprecating humor.

Feeling stronger today.

I don't have the ugliest commute, that's for sure. :) The climate is... Brisk.

Mid teens (F) this morning, with a quartering tailwind. Someone ran a front-loader over the two sloppy sections of MUP, thank the gods. What's left is white ice. Easy riding with studded tires. I think the power company does it, because they drive on the MUP to monitor electrical lines that follow it.

Tude 03-12-09 07:20 AM

OK, anytime now Mr. Weatherman!

Glad I didn't take the studs off as I planned this past weekend. Commute this morning was 20F, 14F windchill (last nights commute home had 35-40 mph gusts - truly fun in busy city traffic) - with a good 1/2" plus of snow on the salt-free roads. Glad for the studs. But I'm truly tired of the dressing ritual before and after the ride - the layering, the wind/rain proof stuff, full facer, glove liners ... ugh. Went thru a nice rainstorm a few days ago too.

It can stop anytime now I'm done for the year.:thumb:

rode new Access mountain bike in this morning for a shakedown. I'm not as stretched out on it as I am on my old Access. Need a longer stem. Other than that, it was a nice morning to ride. Sunny and about 32 degrees F. cheers

Pig_Chaser 03-12-09 07:59 AM

-16C this morning which should be the last of this cold spell. While i'm looking forward to this afternoon's above 0 forecast, i'm dreading what that's going to do to the roads.

genel 03-12-09 08:26 AM

Brrrr! 12f this morning. Removed the studded tires yesterday and back to 32mm road tires. Nice smooth ride again, but had to walk over a couple of icey patches. Looking forward to the forecasted 25 this afternoon.

i've been cutting my leave time down to the wire in order to maximize my wife's AM sleep.. but I ran out to the garage today, all set to ride only to find a flat Schwalbe Big Apple on the front of my dahon.

I had to drive my 21 MPG volvo wagon in. Lame. At least it allowed me to bring in my laptop and gear so that I can mix my student's rap song on Cubase during music club. That only makes two drives in the two weeks I've been commuting. Not bad!

HardyWeinberg 03-12-09 09:42 AM

30F and sunny, again. Great silhouette of Rainier, also like yesterday.

Oh yeah one thing, they swept the 4 lane speedway that is my home stretch last night, so sure enough a truck full of plateglass had it's load shatter somehow and I swerved out into the 40mph lane so the driver could dump out all his shrapnel in the bike lane. *********

jpdesjar 03-12-09 09:56 AM

windy and icy in spots
i really worked hard this morning
i am extra hungry

daredevil 03-12-09 12:54 PM

-4 F today. Should be the last really cold ride of the season. Was quite comfortable. Cheated again with warmers for the toes.

GodsBassist 03-12-09 01:57 PM

I hit a car this morning. He either ran a stop sign or stopped and pulled into the road without seeing me. He stopped in the middle of the freaking road right in front of me as soon as he saw me coming. He was coming from my right and turning left. I didn't want to try and avoid him on my left side, because if he panicked and gunned it to get out of my way he would have just run into me. I couldn't go right because he wasn't all the way out from the curb. All I could do was hit the brakes. I was going pretty slow by the time I hit his front fender, and left a pretty good dent in it with my hip, I think.

I yelled at him that he had a stop sign and he looked totally guilty like "wtf did I just do." I vented for a minute and then told him I was fine, and let him go. I wasn't hurt and the only problem with the bike is that the front wheel is very slightly out of true, but I took it into the shop anyway.

The rest of the ride was relatively uneventful.

noglider 03-12-09 02:06 PM

Wow!

Pretty nice week of riding for me--no collisions with automobles, and I only flipped a few people off. :D

Mild temps around 40-ishF/3-5C. Wildly bright moonlight earlier in the week gave way to overcast the past few mornings. And even though there are rain/snow showers possible this morning (I didn't see any), I think I find this last bit of winter wholely acceptable. :D

Bon weekend, everyone...

tarwheel 03-13-09 05:45 AM

I needed a day off riding to recover. The weather complied. It's raining cats and dogs, so I drove today. My legs are thankful. I had ridden 220+ miles over the past week and my legs were feeling it. It's the first time I have driven to work in about 3 weeks, so I needed to restock supplies and take some laundry home anyway.
