Awesome ride. First day it was warm enough to wear shorts in with a light jacket. 78F on the way home. :thumb:

daxr 03-09-09 07:30 PM

Cold ass cold...17 degrees, light snow again, warming up all the way to 30 midday with a 10 mph headwind home. bleh. Spring had better be here soon or I am going to start complaining.

fearfeasog 03-09-09 07:52 PM

was just fine! had to gas up the Ford on the way home though! :)

actually, i'm waiting for my Surly CC to arrive, so no commuting by bike for a bit...

MIKEnDC 03-10-09 04:22 AM

Cool @ 37F/3C. No wind to speak of, and a mostly clear sky. The full moon made the poor efforts of my headlight seem futile.

After the warm stretch of weather we've had, this morning seemed more like autumn than spring--and, oh yeah, it's still winter. And for some reason I couldn't get that old Led Zeppelin song Ramble On out of my mind ("...the autumn moon lights my way..."). :D

Yesterday morning I was fussing about the darkness on my morning commute with the time change, but by afternoon I was loving it. I had to work 1.5 hours late, so I had daylight all the way home in addition to 80 F temperatures and a tailwind. That was sweet.

The commute this morning was great. The full moon was incredible, and I had a tailwind again on the way to work. My legs were rested up better from the weekend rides, and I caught nearly early traffic signal on green, so I made great time. I wish all commutes were as nice.

That is incredible. I have the opposite situation. I rarely ever see other bike commuters on my route. We have a lot of cyclists in my city but very few commuters. Kind of sad.

A brisk 40F today. I saw another commuter!!! That is really rare for me. In a county of perhaps 100,000 I think that I've only seen 6 different people commuting. We should form a gang.

Treker 03-10-09 06:25 AM

Woo hoo! First commute this year! Excellent conditions at -5C and wind assisted no less :thumb:

23km in 1 hour on my kid's hybrid, a Raleigh 'Cross-Lite' with regular pedals. It's similar to an FCR. The hybrid only cost me about 9 minutes over my normal roadie commute time. That won't come out until I'm certain that icy patches are nil. Made the mistake of not drinking frequently enough from my w/b and the nozzle iced up on me. Wx forecast is +3C this afternoon and +9 tomorrow with gusts to 60kph. That should be interesting. :o

Upper 20sF & overcast. No wind. A bit more snow on the MUP than yesterday, but it was still fairly easy-going. I had to walk in a couple of places where it's just too gnarly to be comfortable. Supposed to be in the 40s later today, with rain. That should take most of the snow off except for the gnarly spots where it's thick.

Here's my steed just beyond one of the bad places.

mangosalsa 03-10-09 06:53 AM

Made it to work, but had to walk the last 1/4 mile or so due to the rear wheel needing a tensioning. I love when you get a wobble and pull over to check it the first time. I lifted the rear end off the ground, spun the wheel, and of course, it spun true. Went to check for a possible bubble in the tire and grabbed a couple of spokes ... they are squishy like soft cheese. Oh well, should have packed that spoke wrench.

All in all the ride was good. Brisk air, big moon out, new bike to ride, etc.

Yesterday was the typical New England day Mark Twain referred to when he said if you don't like the weather wait a minute. Left home under a steady light rain which stopped about a half mile into the ride. The last quarter mile it started to drizzle. Not long after getting to work it started poring, changed to sleet then snow. No accumulation. Back to a steady drizzle. About an hour before getting out of work I have to drive to the next town over, no rain. Drive maybe 3 miles rain sleet wind. Turns to all snow on the way back. At exactly the town line its back to rain. I'm out of work in fifteen minutes. Put all my rain gear on go out the door & not a drop of rain or a puff of wind all the way home.

noglider 03-10-09 08:56 AM

mangosalsa, that should never happen. Retension your wheel! If you do it right, it won't come undone again.

mangosalsa 03-10-09 09:01 AM

Yep, it was on my mind when building this one. These wheels were in the shed for a year or so and I knew I should have had them tensioned before today. Live and learn.

HardyWeinberg 03-10-09 09:29 AM

Cold but beautiful sunlight coming in sideways under the cloud cover. Last night's snow was still everywhere but on the road. Accumulation is pretty rare around here (well, most years anyway, not necessarily this one...).

Last night riding home in pelting hail my 7 yr old said he decided it was fun to ride in the snow. I was really glad to hear that.

noglider 03-10-09 11:45 AM

A minor nit pick: it's sleet, not hail. Hail happens only in the summer.

Lovely ride today. Blue sky, not too warm.

I took a different route home the other day, with a colleague. Quite nice to take a longer route, except he rides a mountain bike, and at one point disappeared through a hole in a fence and went off-road prior to bouncing back onto the road over a curb.

Following him was kind of interesting, given that I'm riding a fixed gear with slick tyres...

Having a full can of soda thrown at you is not a major event, providing it doesn't hit you. Having a pregnant pit bull chase you is no big deal, as long as she doesn't clamp her jaws on your ankle.

All in all, a good commute!

Had an Accident today.

I had an accident today..... provided that you consider changing/cool-down part of the commute.

This morning I smashed the crap out of my elbow above the joint on a flat metal 'hook' in the bathroom stall where I change.

the accident scene, only not as modern looking:
http://www.the-bathroom-designer.co....ouble-hook.jpg

Ow. I swear I can feel it all the way up into my shoulder.

Extra narrow stalls, no handicapped stall. I'm 6'4" with 37" arms. I can't just change out in the bathroom as there is no closing mechanism on the door, which opens directly to the hallway. I have to slide a garbage can in front of it to close the door. Wouldn't want my students seeing me shirtless.... :twitchy:

Ahhh the joys of teaching in a falling apart urban school.

My arm hurts like heck now that I've sat around for a few hours.

Now I'll stop complaining and be glad that I had yet another relatively safe commute. Drivers around here seem mostly alert. Not always perfectly courteous, but they're aware of their surroundings in general.

I passed several middle school age kids with my new red Dahon. They were very excited to see it. I'm enjoying the conversation starter factor of the bike. I'm tracking my commutes on mapmyride.com, and finding it a useful tool.

noglider 03-10-09 08:36 PM

The conversation starting could get old. I used to tow my kids in a trailer. I got stopped a lot and had to answer the same questions over and over.

caloso 03-10-09 10:56 PM

No ride today, but I did not drive alone. Got dropped off by Mrs. Caloso after we toured yet another prospective kindergarten for the Wonder Twins next fall.

On the way home, I put on my adidas and iPod and ran home. Good cross-training.

MIKEnDC 03-11-09 05:49 AM

Mild ride in this morning--the usual light, moderately well-behaved motor traffic. Cool, damp, and overcast. No full moon visible to cause me to wax poetic, and a dunderhead in the lockerroom who could only speak in cliches.

He did point out to me that I wasn't supposed to keep a lock on a locker (new policy that I am, in fact, well aware of).

"Yes I am."

Recitation of policy.

"They know about it. You are allowed to if you commute by bicycle."

"OH! I may have to move closer!"

"You should probably do that anyway," which was followed by a short discussion of energy use, media messages, society, etc. during which my colleague assaulted me with cliches he did not quite understand.

Sheesh. At least it put me in the proper frame of mind (pissed off) to be ready for work. :D

vtjim 03-11-09 06:24 AM

Holy $(@*. It was miserable even by my standards. Pouring rain. Driving headwind. Airport says 20MPH, but I ride along the lakeshore, and the weather station in the middle of the lake says 40MPH. I was warm but just a tad damp upon arrival at work. Dark, overcast, and generally gloomy. Temps in the upper 30sF.

The wind will be at my back for the ride home. :thumb:

FredOak 03-11-09 07:31 AM

No ride today, high wind warning, 30 MPH with gusts > 50 MPH.

tarwheel 03-11-09 07:36 AM

Another beautiful day in NC. Yesterday it was a little "chilly" -- hah -- with temps about 50 F morning and 70 afternoon. Today it is even warmer, 60 F on my morning commute with high expected near 80. Rode through a few light sprinkles on my way to work, but I'm not complaining. However, the weather is supposed to turn cold and rainy by the weekend. Bummer.
