I Missed yesterday's commute due to a work committment but I'm back on today. It was hard work as there was a gusty headwind all the way, plus the weather is starting to get chilly. The forecasts speak of a chance of frosts over the next few nights, but that is better than wind. On the plus side it was nice and sunny, which always put me in a better mood in the morning

This evening I arrived home to see the most beautiful sunset in the world. The red tinge on the clouds to the west reflecting off Dunlop's canal, with pockets of lower level cloud gradually lifting off the Beechmont range in the background. Some days I feel like the luckiest man in the world. |
nice clear day, 29 degrees, slight head wind, average speed 14.7 mph, I guess winter is here.

Had a nice commute in today. After not being able to ride to work the past week, it really felt good to ride in. I got a chance to use my new Night Rider trail rat head light. Pretty nice and no more buying batteries.
The ride in was cool but pleasant. Not much traffic, but I did get stuck behind a truck and had to suck diesel fumes for awhile. :( |
It was 29-30F (-1.7C) on the ride in today. I had light gloves on, a skull cap and my bike sneakers. My toes and hands were just starting to get cold when I pulled into my office at the end of my 9 mile ride. I will have to switch to warmer boots soon, unless the Mango shows up.

Hey Chris, I'll be praying for rain! I was just being funny. I saw a show on Ayers Rock (Sp?) the other day and you are indeed one of the luckiest men alive. Nice continent Dude! No ride today, at least not to work. Maybe I'll take my son out in the trailer today if the weather holds out. Be Blessed!

Speaking of rain, it was pouring rain on my ride home last night. First serious rain ride in a long time -- it was a real dry summer this year. Once again, I restate that bike fenders are the best investment a PNW commuter can buy. I wore my full rain suit and in conjunction with the fenders I was quite dry upon my arrival at home. I was rather shocked to actually see another rider out considering that it was night and pouring rain, but perhaps they were a commuter as well.
Today was classic WA fall weather, fully overcast with thick dark clouds (more rain a coming) and a fairly strong headwind. I can report that the amateurs are off the trail; only 3-4 bikers and a handful of walkers sighted. Truly the halcyon days of trail riding. ;) |
34F/1C this morning. Something about the frost on my tomato plants made it seem colder. I actually made the switch to knickers and full fingered gloves. A polartec fleece replaced my jersey. It lets enough air through that I don't overheat and it breaths well, but I find it too bulky to wear under a jacket or vest. My legs were slower. I've never been able to figure if it is just the restriction of something over my knees or if it is just the cold's effect. Traffic was very light, I was actually able to make both of my difficult left turns without unclipping. Great commute, except I worked too late to get my extra hill climb in.

Temps are on the rise again. It is 39 F/4 C today as I get ready to head out. This is 10 F warmer than yesterday. The rest of the week should stay warm, so it should be great biking weather here in the northeast.
|
V windy today. Speed limit signs on the bridge, but as I hadn't cycled the last couple of days due to a cold, I made the effort.
first time I've needed the main light for a while too. |
I dropped my saddle bag somewhere on the road this morning. I wasn't on my normal route either, so that sucks. Fortunately there wasn't anything too valauble in it, although it did contain the best chain breaker I've ever had.
However, it was perfect riding weather: sunny, warm (but not too warm), minimal wind, easy hills and hardly any close calls with motorists. ChrisL would've hated it ;) |
Nice morning, mid 30's, traffic seemed to be on the heavy side and the drivers seemed impatiant, maybe it was me. At the main intersection in town, a guy walked off the sidewalk holding a coffee, he walked into a car that was stopped at the stop light, the driver of the car jumped out of the car, yelled and beat the guy to his knees. I couldn't believe what I saw, I rode past and told the cop on the next corner and he responded. Ya gotta wonder about some people.

Got my bike back yesterday after having foam (airless) tubes fitted - had a puncture last week, so this morning was the inaugural foam ride... hello roll-resistance. It's like all my gears got bumped down one. Ah well, the legs were getting too used to the ride anyway.
Good ride, although I'm thinking of waking 5 minutes earlier so I can still see the sun rise on my way in. Gotta keep ahead of old Sol! |
Nice commute this morning on the mtn bike (with road tires). I use this bike on days it might rain and my knees are tired from the fixed gear. Fog was so thick I had to stop and clear my glasses twice. Temps in low 50s. Passed a bicycle cop on the way. Those guys are great!

OK ride today - not as chilly as I was expecting, but traffic was quite bad in places.
Cheers, Ed |
The ride home last night was a tough one. The main highway going through town (I-75) was backed up. All the traffic that normally uses the interstate was on all the side roads. So my commute home was heavy with traffic. I think I had to stop at every light too. Besides that the weather was pleasant.
The commute in today was a little warmer. Pretty good ride in. The weather going home should be really nice |
Back in the saddle again after a 2 week break. - Great to be back on the bike, especiially now that temps have returned to seasonal and above. Bike shirt and shorts on the way home last night, added a long sleeve shirt this morning, temp was +11 C, pleasant for the ride.
May take tomorrow off to have a look at the world championships downtown. |
I've been riding a lot recently but haven't been able to post due to the server swap and general busy-ness.
I rode to pick up my wife's van at the service shop last night. When I arrived I saw a big line and I thought, "Damn, there must be a lot of people picking up their cars.". Turns out they were voting -- the dealership was a polling place. This a.m.'s ride in was great. Definitely getting chillier -- two shirts and the "winter" jacket. |
it keeps getting darker (and colder) in the mornings :( can't wait for the lights I ordered to get here.
Other then that my commute rules :D |

Seriously, I didn't mind the weather this morning, but I would like the rain back. Was also nice to have just about all of Surfers Paradise totally to myself because the construction workers on the Esplanade allowed me to use a road that was closed. :D |
Hey Chris, the road closed thing combined with new pavement is very nice! I've only experianced it a handfull of times. The Wal-Mart Wonderbike made it through another twelve miles today. That's around 670 miles now on $99.00 bucks. Someday my EZ-1 will arrive and I'll have something a little nicer to ride. Baby steps you know. Beautiful ride, only one driver pulled out in front of me today, I still have at least half the brake pads I started out with this morning. Praise God for strong breaks and a strong grip on the levers! :D Lest I forget... the temps were in the 80's again today with a couple of sprinkles on the way home.

Windy, with severe crosswinds crossing the bridge. At each of the pillars my bike moved ideways about 6 feet!!
Tailwind thereafter so a headwind home. Mild too, I was sweating in a wicking fleece and Goretex cover. |

Oh how my heart bleeds for them! :p |
My Mango velomobile finally showed up this morning. Need to finish some work at home prior to my maiden voyage to the office. I am looking forward to not having to worry as much about cold hands and feet. More later.

Great! I look forward to hearing about this. My commute home yesterday was uneventful. nothing exciting. Nice temps and lite traffic. The ride in this morning was good. I picked up the pace a little and made it in 10 minutes earlier. |
