Dr. Manhattan 08-18-03 09:42 PM

Just started the greatest job that I've ever had and my commute is now 20 minutes per day instead of 2 hours,(round trip.) It's been a good week so far. The ONLY downside is that my route has a "Tennessee Hill" (patent pending,) THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE KILLER.

Ritz 08-18-03 10:26 PM

Still hot and sticky in Houston Texas, even at eleven at night. Covered sixteen miles today. I had an errand to run before work (New mirror) so I got about four extra miles on the commute today.

BrenHébert 08-19-03 02:55 AM

Well, I live two blocks from my day job. (I did run to the bank before going to work today, though). And MAYBE 1 mile from my Family Karaoke hosting job I do two days per week (and haul the equipment in my B.O.B. Yak).

I have a 1995 or 1996 Giant Yukon outfitted with 26"x1.5" semi-slicks.

nice day, nice ride

Another beautiful ride this morning. Sun shining, mist rising off the water, lots of people out jogging/walking... very nice.

Peaceful ride into Chicago today - nice and cool, in the 60s. Going home will be a lot warmer, forecast is for the upper 80s, so I'll be nice and sweaty when I get home. :)

Good ride in today,

Yesterday evening I had an amusing argument with a driver who pulled all the way over to the inside, despite there being only half the space between the kerb and the car (stopped to make a right turn) in front of them - blocking my progress on the inside. My polite request that they did not need to cut me off etc. was repayed with a tirade of abuse and whining that, alas, I cannot repeat here without fear of being banned from the form.
I caught them up again at the next set of lights and tried to point out, politely, that their left side brakelight was not working.... and got another foul mouthed earful about how I should ride on the pavement (sidewalk) and there should have been room for their enormous Mercedes to pass the other car if they had just moved up a bit...... I'm happy to say that I (for once) managed to conduct myself with good manners and without recourse to expletives and rude insinuation so I must admit to being highly amused on this destinctly non life threatening occasion!
Just shows that you can't judge the manners of folk by the car that they drive.

Ride safe

Cheers,

Ed

Beautiful rainy ride in! I noticed several closed gas stations as the gas crisis here in Phoenix continues. Enjoyed getting my "Rain Bike" that I built a few months ago out for it's first ride in the rain. I really noticed the difference the fenders made (even if they were road bike fenders). Great ride!

caloso 08-19-03 10:26 AM

Took a much different route than usual today, passing from my quiet residential area through a semi-industrial corridor to suburbs to agricultural and back into town. I passed three separate kids on bikes (yay!) who had their helmets hanging on their handlebars (boo!). I told each of them "It doesn't work if you don't put it on your head" and rapped my knuckles on my own helmet.

Kids! Sheesh.

Nice morning ride in today. It's cooler, which is nice, and no wind, which is even nicer --the ride home last night had a brutal headwind. I had more energy today, but not any more time so I did the quick route in :( Perhaps the long way home tonight? :)

That ol' sun is getting to be mighty low in the sky when I get out of work. I can't believe summer is almost over. Great riding weather this week, not as miserably muggy as the previous 3 weeks. I've been trying Boeshield lube the past 3 weeks. So far I am not greatly impressed. It may be fine in the lubrication department, but I think it is more "dirt adhesive" than Pedro's extra dry.

Another day in paradise! Dreaming about the new recumbent I'm about to get, I turned the 550 mile mark on the ol' Wal-Mart wonderbike. I really enjoy the time alone with my thoughts (11:00 pm ride home) Not too much traffic, cool breezes, Little Critters making noises in the roadside wilderness. God is good!:p

NuTz4BiKeZ 08-20-03 01:18 AM

yup God is good and you are gonna feel a lot closer to heaven when you try that bent out... They're like flying a cloud :D

Ritz 08-20-03 01:46 AM

The first 'Bent I ever rode was a EZ-1. Then I was bitten by the bug. Stress management recumbents (LBS) Is very close to me (5 miles) and I go by there to drool often. They're gonna' flip out when I tell them the good news. That's where I also got my first taste of the mythical metal Titanium. The good Dr. Ed Charlesworth was kind enough to let me take his Gold Rush Ti out for a quick juant (very nice bike). I'm very excited!

chewa 08-20-03 02:03 AM

Very blustery wind, which makes crossing the bridge very exciting!

And I commend you on that. Doesn't it feel good to rise above and laugh at people like this while they get to spend the rest of the day feeling stressed out and miserable? Kind of reminds me of those Two Up lyrics "If I was tough enough, I'd knock your arse to the floor - but I'm not, so I'll just laugh and make a run for the door". :D

Oh yeah, there was a reason I was posting to this thread today - I need an answer. Can someone please explain to me one more time about this thing called "winter"?

darrencope 08-20-03 05:48 AM

Had an excellent ride in this morning - I hit every green light between my home and work for I think the first time since I have been commuting (almost 4 months)!

Ritz 08-20-03 09:45 AM

Congrat's Darren! It's nice to get that once in a while.:D

Had a good ride home last night until a guy in car that must have been legally exempt from using turn signals turned right in front of me. I managed to sqeeze enough room between me and the car to bring my 80 pound loaded hunk to a stop just short of making contact. The guy got out and yelled at me and threatened to do bodily harm if I ever did a thing like like that again. What a whack-o, I calmly asked if he forgot his medication this morning and that only cranked him up more. Finally I had my fill of verbal abuse and told him that if he didn't get his overweight, out of shape a** out of my way I was going to tear into him until he learned how to treat people with respect. He called me a jerk and got in his car and drove off. This morning was a beautiful morning, I had a pleasant uneventfull ride to work.

Funny how us bike people can work hard to propel ourselves, but some slimeball motorists can't lift a finger to signal a turn! I resorted to some namecalling last night on the way home. I was on the lift bridge, half way across when a motorist (who could have easily taken up some of the vacant lane next to him) waited until he was about 3' behind me to loudly sound his horn! The lift bridge grating is slippery at the best of times, so needless to say I was already on edge. After a slight wobble, I managed a "you f****n a****le!!!" to the driver, but there was no response.

Other than that, it's been a great week for riding! Watching a beautiful sunrise yesterday over a calm Lake Ontario at about 6:25 am, made the rest of the day a great one!

Finally! I had a great commute home last night. I always enjoy the commute to work in the mornings, but the commute home always seems like a chore. Usually because it's too hot. Last night there was some cloud cover and the temperature was only 90F with not much of a breeze. It was great!!!

djwid 08-20-03 12:00 PM

I had a good ride home last night and a good ride in. My average time is dropping which is good. I like to ride in the cool morning and the evening is always a bit worrisome since commutter stress is higher. All my accidents and close calls have occurred in the evening.

Just the other day I was yelling to some motorist "Hey! Turn signal works better than telepathy!"

As for my own commute: blessedly uneventful.

Jean Beetham Smith 08-20-03 06:07 PM

Duncan, it's the reverse for me, all my "change my shorts" events have been in the morning. I always figured everybody slept late, was in a hurry, and not quite awake so they drove extra fast and stupid then. I guess the two of us average out to crazy drivers are out there any time of day.
