N7CZinMT:

Glad you are OK (and your bike is, too). Have a good trip to Ohio.

Rode in again today, completing a week of commuting four times. I should be able to go 4 times every week now. Yeah. Still feeling my shoulders, though. Hope that's going to go away as time passes. I might start looking at some panniers or something to at least get the backpack off my back. I've been keeping it just a couple pounds though so I wouldn't expect it to make that big a difference.
Glad to hear you're OK, N7CZinMT. That must be pretty damn scary.

Tim

It was cloudy both morning & afternoon. Traffic was light & aside from a few sprinkles each way, the promised rain never came. Don

Not to brag but I guess I have the easiest commute of all. I finally got my wish come true and get to work from home. Never late to work and I can finally ride my bike again on my lunch hours. I usually only end up doing about 10 miles because of all the traffic lights; just to get on my bike makes it all worth it, FREEDOM!! Even if I get a flat, which I did my first day "back", it didn't matter that I made it home a while later then my lunch hour--no one knew and I didn't tell them. When the time changes I may even start riding my bike "before work" when it gets to hot to ride in the middle of the day. Then "after work", my husband and I can jump on the tandem and take a nice neighborhood ride. I guess all this doesn't really count as "commuting" but riding is riding -- right? :D

Not a promising start to the week.

Got the MTB out of the garage for its first ride after I treated it to a new chain and cassette at the weekend. Got to the top of the road to find the chain slipping on the cranks, no way could I ride to work. Quick double back.

Fortunately I've just brought my other bike into a roadworthy condition, so a quick change of saddle bags and I was off on the road bike.

After that that it was a great ride in, quiet and a lot quicker!

Chris L 03-15-04 03:10 AM

Pretty uneventful today. Traffic was relatively light for some reason, so I was only travelling at the same speed as the cars (mind you, I'm still recovering from yesterday's century). I wouldn't mind the temperature dropping a few degrees, but I suspect that isn't going to happen for a while.

PaulH 03-15-04 08:04 AM

51 F/11 C and breezy here this morning. I took the Nokian studded snow tires off the bike this weekend and replaced them with my new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. After three months on the studs, the quiet will take a bit of getting used to. However, tere are real benefits -- even with all the stoplights and stop signs, my trip was several minutes faster than usual.

Thanks, Paul. I was just going to laugh off any possibility of getting snow tomorrow morning in the DC area, but now that you've gone and taken the studded tires off your bike, I think we know what's coming. Snow and ice for tomorrow morning's commute. ;)

Ed Holland 03-15-04 09:00 AM

I was greeted by mild but windy weather this morning. Not a bad ride in, despite the tricky moments where the wind tries to help with the steering...

No commute tomorrow as I have to travel on business.

Cheers,

Ed

Nice ride this morning. It's my first since my emergency appendectomy. You'll be surprised how being laid up in a hospital for a week will ruin your fitness level. Still it felt good to be on the roads again. We may have rain this afternoon so that should be fun.

mtessmer 03-15-04 10:19 AM

Nice ride in this morning, a little cool (22F/-5C) but clear skies! I didn't need my headlight for the first time this year! Its suppose to get up to thirty something today. Beautifu sunrise this morning with the pinks on the horizon!

ET_SoCal 03-15-04 10:59 AM

Foggy, wet & cool this morning, but I felt great after 102 mile ride Saturday...

mjw16 03-15-04 11:04 AM

Wonderful ride in this morning. It was a lot warmer than anticipated, balmy, minus the rain that had been predicted. I was struggling a little after this weekend's hike, but latched on to a roadie and let him pull me most of the way in. I concentrated a little too much on his back wheel and missed most of the scenery I usually enjoy so much in the morning. I just heard that DC will be getting a "wintry mix" over the next couple of days, but if temps are at least in the 30's, I'm going to ride. It will give me a chance to try out my new rear fender.

Paul H: If this morning is any indication, then I think we're going to see a lot more commuters this summer than in summers past.

Hants Commuter 03-15-04 03:23 PM

Horrible and nasty drizzly rain coupled with a head wind. To cap it all one of the main roads was closed. The other route had A lane restriction to take it down to 1 lane and a broken down car on the way up a hill So everything was at a complete standstill ahh poor car drivers (not! )

In the end I managed to overtake all the cars including those pulled hard in to stop me coming up the inside. So it wasn't that bad a ride after all :D

Kodama 03-15-04 04:29 PM

Grey day today with a pretty strong headwind for most the route. Dressed more in my spring togs so I was a bit cold. Made up for that a bit with some vigorous spinning and had a pretty nice ride in. Felt pretty good for the typical Monday morning weariness.

trekkie820 03-15-04 05:16 PM

Today was great. Had a zen moment where i was one with everything around me, and i just felt alive...kinda weird how these things happen when they do. Bright, sunny, 40 degree day, low wind, low traffic!

Chris L 03-15-04 09:52 PM

I feel like crap today. I think I'm coming down with something, could be the prolonged lack of sleep that goes with summer in Queensland. If I don't feel better tomorrow I'm taking the day off.

AdrianB 03-15-04 10:01 PM

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well Chris. I hope that you're not getting sick. There's been rumours of a nasty cold / bronchitis around the place. I've been out for a week and still not 100%. Definitely take it easy and rest up! Take the time to read a good book or listen to some music :)

Chris L 03-16-04 02:12 AM

It's a very mild fever right now. In the past I've cured this with a 150km ride that I regularly do which involves a decent amount of climbing. That is not available tonight, but I'm heading out for a few km soon anyway. I want to know now whether I'm getting sick, because I've got a 4.30am CPA study session in the morning.

Hants Commuter 03-16-04 02:17 AM

Dull, Grey and Drizzle. Enough said I think

Daily Commute 03-16-04 07:08 AM

This is why I bike commute

We had half an inch to an inch of snow on the bike paths by the time I left this morning. It was 28F. Big, thick snow flakes were falling, making everything in the distance fade into white. My bike path through through woods and along a river was beautiful, and I was the first one out on most of it.

Last night I switched the Nokians back onto my Cross-Check, so I just cruised through the snow. This was one of my best 8-mile rides ever.
:p

Added, 8:45 a.m.:
It's 8:45 and very few of the car commuters made it in. More proof that bikes are more reliable than the steel coffins.

Isn't it always that way in the UK? Today is going to be a blast, snow, wind, wet roads and as*hole drivers throwing slush at me

PaulH 03-16-04 10:06 AM

No snow here in DC. It was 37 F / 3 C and very light rain. A pity, really -- even though I had swapped off the studded tires, I was hoping for one last snowstorm of the season.

The Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires provided a quiet, smooth ride. If they are as flat resistant as they are supposed to be, they could prove to be outstanding "non-winter" commuting tires.

You guys, snow, cold, slush, grey...

Southern California was 62 degrees, calm and clear at 6:45am ... :roflmao:

So sorry to hear that. Maybe one day you'll be lucky enough to bike somewhere else. But I admire your ability to deal with unpleasant weather. ;)

Hmmmm... twisted... I like that in a person :D Hey, it was calm and clear here too! Of course it was 22F.

Beautiful day today. At 7am it was 52 F or so, no wind, bright and sunny. Strange weather. Got up to 85 yesterday and is supposed to be 84 today. Is it really still winter? Lots of records falling around here. It's my second day on the bike. Looking forward to much more.

Hants Commuter 03-16-04 01:14 PM

Much improved weather on the way home, bright, sunny and about 16 degrees C

To celebrate I decided to ride home the long way

What a difference 10 hours makes

Kodama 03-16-04 03:19 PM

Similar conditions today as yesterday but colder and stronger wind. Still beat driving, but the headwind was not much fun. I faced the headwind on the ride home last night as well, we shall see if I get it both ways again.

ollo_ollo 03-16-04 03:55 PM

Breezy down here in Olympia also but dry roads are nice. Don
