I left the house at 6:25am and headed east. The Sierras were edged in pink and above I counted 10 glowing streaks in the dark blue sky. They were contrails of jetliners heading east from SFO, I think. What a beautiful morning for a flight, I thought.

And what a beautiful day for a ride.

Pretty much. I cut across Scott at the light before it splits into L'ville and 78 and take the first right into Medlock. I come out on the other side on Desmond and cross Clairmont near the VA Hospital. Cut through the Emory Clairmont campus thingy, ride about 100 feet on Clifton (the only busy road I'm ever on) and I'm there. It's really not bad at all since 80% of it is neighborhoods or parks.

Had a nice ride in this morning, it was 6F/-14C and light snow, kind of pretty (but I am kind of getting tired of it). Took a different route then usual because some of the residentual roads weren't plowed very well. We are suppost to see 17F/-8C this afternoon and the sun is shining (finally). We've had so much subzero weather, seventeen feels like a heat wave. The daylight hours are getting longer and that makes me a happy camper.

Really foggy this morning with the glowing sun in the clear skies behind. Cold too, the radio warned of "freezing fog" which sure sounds unpleasant, though I did not seem to experience it. Perhaps tonight?

Some great riding so far this week, very cold & foggy in the predawn darkness. I have to be careful of going to fast as it gives me the classic "ice cream" headache. By lunchtime the fog is gone & it warms right up. when I rode home from work on my Grand Jubile, it was 53F. Only negative so far is I managed to pickup a little dagger shaped piece of rock in one of the sewup tires on my Bianchi. I hung the bike out of sight in the boiler room & will deal with it when the weather is better & I feel the need for speed! Don

I usually take a bicycle path around a shopping center, and today was no exception. But when I approached the furnature store behind which lies the bike pathway, I had to stop.

A fellow was cleaning up broken glass on the front of the store, and he told me this story. Someone had backed a large truck up to the store front very early in the morning, smashed the window, entered the building, and stolen several items of furnature. The man knew this had happened, because the police caught the fellow less than a mile away. His truck had expired license plates, and he was pulled over by the police for a routine check. That check stopped being routine when they found he had furnature and no sales slip. The police called the store, and found it had just been burglarized. The man was arrested, and is in jail. He had also done the same thing to other stores some fifty miles away in Salem, Oregon.

I continued on my ride, and stopped by Starbucks to get together with some church members (we do that on Tuesday). I had an interesting tale to tell.

It was cold in the morning, but very nice weather in the afternoon (50s F) and sunny. I brought home my laptop, and carried about 28 pounds on my new Rans Stratus; it's doing very well, except for some flats (I think that may be solved with some tough strips). Tomorrow I fly all day, so my next riding day is Thursday.

A little warmer than I would have liked this morning. Made a new friend on the commute so I now have someone to ride with occasionally should our paths ever cross. My old commuting-buddy is finishing her job on Friday, so the timing was OK, too.

First morning ride above freezing in a while. I saw a flock of 30-40 male robins on Moose Hill, and then 7 turkeys displaying in the pasture at the top of the hill. It felt great to actually get my bike moving quickly.

Would have liked a better ride home then I did yesterday. I had some fierce headwinds on the way home and got a flat on my rear tire about 2 miles from home. Besides the wind the weather was pretty nice, very sunny and tempature was around 39F.

The ride this morning was cool tempature was around 21F. No wind and really lite traffic. Nice commute!

Very good rides lately, I have really been enjoying myself. It helps that we have had some better weather too.

One funny moment, earlier this week... I spotted a gap in traffic on the roundabout, went for it, but with the first big push & pull to get going, the handlebars twisted in the stem clamp. One of those moments reserved for surprise expletives Fortunately I stayed on the bike, got around the roundabout and out of traffic. Thankfully, swift application of the multi tool fixed the problem in 2 min.

Guess that is a warning: Check those nuts and bolts occasionally.

Daily Commute

The ride this morning was colder than the 20F the weather folks said it would be, but, all-in-all, it was fun. I love my recent upgrade to studded tires. I no longer have to walk over the icy patches.

The best part of the trip was the elevator ride to my office. I got in with my bike, still wearing my shell and balaclava, tights, etc. The elevator stops on three. A fat guy gets on and pushes the button for five. The stairs are 15 feet from the elevator. This lazy fat guy waited longer for the elevator than it would have taken him to take the stairs.

Gee, more snow, just what we needed , the weather man last night said we've had snow 20 out of the last 23 days. It was only an inch this time so it wasn't a big deal but we'll have another inch for the ride home. All and all it was still a nice ride, I'm just not moving to quickly. We are up to 55 inches so far this winter and we still have the rest of this month and March (March is traditionally our snowyest month). I'm ready for spring, but I'll keep pedaling.

tried the bike path for the first time in about 3 weeks - all in all it was in pretty good shape apart from about 4 60 foot stretches where I had to get off my bike and shuffle across the hard packed ice

Nearly got right-hooked this morning. I think the only thing that saved me is that I happened to be on the east side of her car and my shadow passed over windshield. She jammed on her brakes and let me pass through.

Monday afternoon, a friendly face greeted me in the hallway. "Looks like it's going to be a chilly ride home this evening!"

I smiled and nodded. I suppose it seems chilly to some people, but I thought that 50-ish temps was about as perfect as biking weather can get! But I didn't say that.

Really nice ride in this morning. Completely clear skies with only some residual fog drifting above the river. Cold air but the sun was warm, and I was a bit overheated at the end. I have decided that my low average speeds can be corrected by an application of effort and I made good time into work today.

Yesterday evening, I put my overcoat on the rack and rode home in my suit. It felt like spring, with a temperature of 45 F / 6 C. I now have my new Shimano hub generator installed, so I also enjoyed the silent white glow of the headlight.

Another morning that was several degrees C more than I wanted it to be. Left a few minutes earlier and took my time. It helped that for once I got a decent run through those dickheads with the lollipop signs at Broadbeach that seem to like making people stop for no readily apparent reason. Oh yeah, I think after a week and a half they've managed to dig a very small hole in the road! Bravo!

It was a beautiful, clear, cold morning. Just me, my bike & the stars most of the way in. At lunchtime, my 2 dogs cleared all the mallards & Canada geese from our end of the lake. They got pretty wet in the process. Fortunately for them, it was a sunny day that reached 57F this afternoon. This false Spring sure is great! Don

I had a blast, it was snowing lightly and in the 20s. Five miles from work it started coming down, big flakes, wind, cold, visibility was really down. Didn't last long, but man it was like riding in a post card!
