The ride was a rough one today. I barely slept last night and woke up with a bad stomach ache. I was really dragging and seriously considered calling in sick. I finally got dressed and on the bike and felt like I was going to vomit after a few turns of the pedals. I took it easy and spun in at a moderately slow 16 mph average. The weather was nice and cool and I saw a couple of other riders. Now to find a place where I can take a 20 minute cat nap...

Hope you're feeling better soon mjw

Had a really nice ride this morning - calm, warm and sunny conditions - perfect for riding right on past work and pursuing a day's cycling instead.

Cheers,

Ed

Gorgeous, gorgeous morning.

Now that our work and family schedules have synched again, my buddy and I have restarted our 6:30am training rides. He pulled up and the first thing he said was, "Were you watching the Tour? Ullrich is attacking!"

When we got to the turnaround, he pulled out the cell and called his wife: "Oh, sorry. I thought you were awake and watching the Tour. Okay, nevermind, go back to sleep. Love you, bye."

Luckily for him, his wife is VERY understanding about this bike thing.

No bike commute today due to meeting after work, but I wanted to post about yesterday's ride. Coming into my workplace there is a short drive with speed limit 20 from the main road to the parking ramp. When I hit this road I usually go 20 mph so cars don't zip around me and cut me off. Yesterday, a car decided that 20 was too slow, and she started to pass me (2 lanes). I knew she would cut me off, so I hammered up to 33 mph (flat no wind) before she finally gave up and we reached the parking ramp with me in front (maybe 1/4 mile). I saw her face when she realized that she couldn't pass me without topping 40 and lets just say she was floored. I've yet to have so much fun on my bike :)

On the way home I took the long way to cool down after a frustrating day at work. Too bad I can't ride every day.

super-douper 07-20-04 05:05 PM

on the way to work yesterday I pulled up to a light less than 1mile from work. I recognize the guy in the car next to me as someone who works in my building (I always see him in front of the building smoking). I think nothing of it until I get to the front door of the building and see him rounding the corner in his car still. It was a short distance, but there was a small hill and he was in a car! I beat another co-worker to work on my bike, it's a short commute, but feels good just the same.

After work I decided to get some exercise, so I did a short 10 mile ride. Got to see a small county lake that I've never been to before, looked at the neighborhoods along the way because I'll be buying a home in the next year or so....found a creek that I didn't know existed, and a multi-use path that follows it. I'll have to find out where it goes!

I feel so much more efficient on my bike, even though I'm technically slower than if I were to take a car, I am getting exercise and I notice more around me. I would have never found that creek and trail if I hadn't been on my bike.

Today I installed the panniers that came in the mail yesterday, tomorrow I take the long way to work (approx 10miles) and no laptop-backpack induced sweaty back! WOOHOOO!!

Nice ride today. The wind is back with force. (as usual). It has cooled down back into the mid 80F range. Much better than the mid to high 90s. The ride this morning was warm. Temps were in the mid 60sF. That is warm for the area at 7:00AM.

Saw a dead raccoon this morning. That is the first of that particular critter I've come across.

ollo_ollo 07-20-04 05:26 PM

Partly cloudy, warm & a light breeze today. Managed to ride into the wind both ways on my lunchtime commute. Saw 6 other commuters today so things are looking up.

Left a little bit later than usual this morning because I was watching the Tour, suffered a pinch-flat about 3 miles from home. :( First flat I've had. Took me about 15 minutes to replace the tube, got to work about 12 minutes late. Very nice ride coming home though traffic was heavier than usual. Relatively mild weather (warm, not unbearably hot) for this time of the year in Ga.

Greek Acrobat 07-21-04 02:10 AM

Decent ride this morning. Humid though, very very sweaty when I got in.

Took a bit of a detour this evening, found a delightful bit of singletrack, and right in the city! Wouldn't ride it during the day, but at night it's just beatiful, and quiet. All I could hear apart from the sound of my tyres on the dirt was the pounding of the ocean. Those sandy patches made for some interesting moments with the panniers, too.

Ed Holland 07-21-04 06:54 AM

Very humid here at the moment, but I put in a cracking 19.7mph average this morning. One day I'll break that 20mph barrier..

Cheers,

Ed

DogBoy 07-21-04 07:20 AM

Yuck...I felt like I was riding through soup today with the humidity. I was still sweating 15 min off the bike. I ended up just hanging out in the locker room trying to dry off.

Today I rode my road bike instead of my commuter. Its amazing the difference between them. I found myself pushing harder to go fast, but my speed differential (average) was 4 mph! That's quite a difference. Group ride tonight in Black Earth. Should be interesting :)

RicardoJM 07-21-04 08:07 AM

The temps were in the mid 60's and there was a slight head wind. The ride in was the most enjoyable one to date. I can't quite lay my finger on the reason why, but it all felt good this morning. I had the chance to watch my odometer flip from 999 to 1000 - that's something I would like to see more often.

There were 14 other bikes out today.

brennser 07-21-04 09:42 AM

nice ride today - passed 2 fawns at mile 1 and a large buck about 2 feet from me at mile 5

the weather gods continue to smile on us in DC this summer - almost the end of July and temps have yet to creep into the 90s

mjw16 07-21-04 10:24 AM

Slept in and left really late today, meeting a friend on the trail. We rode in together (until I broke off at the 14th st bridge) at a leisurely 15 mph avg chatting along the way. I couldn't believe all the other riders out there zipping along in every direction. At the intersection of 15th and Independance I was one of about 5 riders waiting for the light, a virtual bike traffic jam-I'm usually by myself or among 1 or 2 others at most. It was really neat to see everything from beaters to nice road bikes to mountain bikes and recumbants. I guess that's what I miss for leaving at 5:30 in the morning. Other than that, I'm working on a second consecutive "all ride week" and my new bike seems to have all of the kinks worked out of it.

nesdog 07-21-04 11:56 AM

My once a week ride, 14 miles each way. Weather is hot in Socal with temps at noon expected to be 90's where I am. It was in the high 60's when I left home before 7 am. Only saw one bunny hopping along, but it doesn't count 'cause it was in my backyard!

Little traffic, bright sun in my eyes for the first 8 miles. Hate that! I didn't have much enthusiasm for the ride until the end, when I noticed I was close to making it about a minute faster than usual. Nope, wasn't too be. I just didn't care enough to pound it out!

The ride home this afternoon is gonna be a hot one!

Very pleasant spin to work. I'd taken the dog for a run early this morning so I didn't want to push it on the bike. Not because my legs were tired but because I was still a bit warm, even after a cool shower. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone, but I took off my helmet in the last 500m to cool my head.

Going to be 100F at 5pm this afternoon. I can hardly wait.

Drink lots of water! Yikes, I am dying at 85 + humidity. I can't imagine what 100 is like.

My bike commute is what gets me through weeks like this. I've been going in early and working late everyday for the past 2 weeks. Until today, I haven't even had a chance to look at my email, let alone BF. Last night was the worst, I didn't leave work until 10pm, fortunately I didn't eat lunch until 4pm, so I wasn't bonking on the ride home. So I got home, had an O'Doul's and went to bed. I ate my supper for breakfast today. Guess what, my legs were like lead, but the ride to work was a joy and the trip home was just as good. Speed is not all, Thank God.

Kodama 07-21-04 07:20 PM

Still busy at work, but still of course on the bike. Yesterday I "enjoyed" headwinds both directions but today had a bit of a tailwind on the way in. Temps have been in the 70s(f) but it is going up, with low 90s(f) predicted for the weekend! I can't say I enjoy temps out of the 70's very much :(

ollo_ollo 07-21-04 10:16 PM

Another perfect day in the South Sound area. 52F at 6AM, about 79F for my Noon commute & 86F in the afternoon. Thankfully we are back to our normal lower humidity today. I was riding my Myata 710 this morning & had to reset the computer after a glitch going downhill at about 31 mph, I noticed the max speed reading jumped up to 73mph.(Ha Ha) When I got to work, I just zeroed everything out & started over.

super-douper 07-21-04 11:07 PM

Wasn't looking forward to the ride this morning, but like all rides...I realized I was being stupid once I got in the saddle. The ride home was great. Rode a new route, 15miles instead of 6miles. Rode past a lake I've never been to before, found a bike trail that I didn't know was there and took that to another lake that I rode to earlier this week. Got home, ate dinner, cleaned house, drank beer...... the ride turned a bad day at work into a great day overall.

RicardoJM 07-22-04 07:54 AM

Another great morning to ride. Temps were in the mid-60's with no wind. The thunderstorms predicted for yesterday evening arrived as showers. I counted 14 other people out on bikes. The first person was a young man with a fishing pole, I almost turned around and followed him.

I rode home at around 4pm. I overheated and had to stop at the Sac State Aquatic Center. Sat in the shade, poured water over my head and finally recovered. Supposed to hit 103 today - stay cool and just cruise.

caloso 07-22-04 03:10 PM

I'm just going to tell myself that it's only 39 degrees.
